This doesn’t bode well for VMAPA.  If you’ve got all these good people working tirelessly nonstop all day everyday to right the ship for a long while now, then why is the organization down to the wire like this? Granted, I’m no expert on filing audits/financial statements but as a private citizen, if my finances are in question federally or on a state level I respond immediately…if not sooner!

BTW I worked on a federally funded  program for a number of years and I was responsible to balance everything to the penny and I wasn’t given the luxury of 60 days to submit supporting documentation if they had questions about my invoices. California state requirements are a bit more lenient but one would think an organization who is reaping millions of dollars from the residents of California would be held to a higher standard of reporting.

I went to a G-Men practice with a buddy in the corps in spring of 1978 and there were maybe 10 in the drum line, 15 horns and 10 CG.

Then in 1979 practices and camps were jam packed with members.

Some of the other corps didn't respect the Guardsmen, because they had a reputation for "throwing a corps together" at the last minute.

As someone who competed against the Guardsmen BITD … we had a ton of respect for them as competitors.

On the field, presenting their 2024 show ‘Springtime for Hitler’, Drum Corps International is proud to present Santa Clara Vanguard!

eta - Springtime for Hitler is a musical in The Producers.  It is supposed to be intentionally bad.  If I give more info it will be a spoiler.  Go watch the 1967 version (not the later remake).

How apropos for the last few weeks. Flame away…donning my flame retardant attire.

I hope I’m not detecting a dry sense of “oh that wasn’t real”….I lost a friend of mine to C19 at the very front end of it; 5 days from hospital admission to his passing (his son went on to march Pacific Crest.) My son and I could not be in the same hospital room as my grandmother due to C19 protocols in place as she passed from a head injury she incurred when she fell; we had to get her through the triage hospital tents set up in the parking lot just to get her in there.

I hear you, I lost my oldest brother to complications of C19. Many of us lost loved ones to “The Scourge” but even in the middle of all this, several corps took that time to rebuild and continue BAU in the new normal. Unfortunately, VMAPA did not do so. They have a lot of ground to make up due to mismanagement. I hope they are able to overcome this but I’m not convinced the BOD in its current configuration is up to the task. VMAPA, please prove me wrong.

We have a non-zero number of auditioners, we're working on money things, and it's totally not our fault that it has taken this long because reasons, but we're totally going to get it done at some point. BTW, new uniforms woo!

Russ is trying to put the best face forward on VMAPA but reciting the tale of woe from 2019-2022 and up to 2023 isn’t helping his cause.

I read that paragraph and thought  “Why the mass exodus”? What was going on with the organization that multiple staff/admin/ board members decided to jump ship while the ones who stayed on let VMAPA go to hell in a handbasket? Was it a case of not wanting to be liable for what was coming down the pike from both the financials and member safety?

To me this letter raises more questions than paint a rosy picture. For Russ’ sake, and the sake of VMAPA I hope he’s given the latitude to turn things around but you have to keep in mind he is surrounded by the people who let this happen in the first place!

    Godspeed Russ Gavin.

Only a complete moron wouldn't raise prices with corresponding payouts to match profitability.

    Manager is in Hawaii

They don't have a bingo committee anymore

No one is watching the hen house

    Financials are not audited.

I'm going with activities more on the illegal side of things.

    This.

When I was on the board, it was effectively ALL OF IT. To the point SCV had an ATM in the building. No credit cards were accepted.

That said, I would hope they migrated toward cards and electronic sources of payment.

After the bingo fraud, it was a major pain to keep tabs on things, and it can only be done manually, and is highly dependent on a system of double custody.

I couldn't tell you how much of Bingo is Cash/Card, and neither can SCV, at least not with audited financial statements.

Yikes! Isn’t this part of the reporting process?
