Indeed. This is good for the Stars.  They’ve had a weird disconnect sometimes between the sections and Markworth can being experience to the team in how to mesh it together

I think fleshing out the show design was the issue for BS this year. Just too many ideas fighting for center stage. Musically, I thought they were pretty cohesive. Not sure how Mr. Markworth will fix theme cohesiveness

"When a charitable organization fails to submit complete filings for each fiscal year, its status on the Attorney General's Registry of Charitable Trusts will be listed as Delinquent. If the delinquency is not remedied, the Registry status will be further changed to Suspended, and/or Revoked. A charitable organization that is not in good standing with the Registry of Charitable Trusts may not operate or solicit donations in California. (Cal. Code of Regs., ###. 11, § 999.9.4.) "

The "may not operate" thing is what should make everyone involved blanch. They have been operating while under suspension (running Bingo? Congratulations, you're 'operating').

Is the “Bingo operation” considered outside of the charitable organization? Just asking.

I am not at all defending SCV's actions last year involving the audition camp held and then the corps declaring no season the following week.  I simply pointed out that the returning of funds was/is a grey area from a legal outlook.  Auditions did happen, feedback was given, instruction happened, the kids were housed, they were fed.  However, I also agree that there certainly would be an argument that kids were deceived, because they were paying to audition to be a part of a touring competitive drum corps, and the corps did not follow through with that at all.  (not justifying it, but there have been many a corps that was practicing even well into the Spring, who then decided to not come out....ALWAYS a bad scene).  I agree that the corps should've made every effort to try to reimburse kids (or offer the audition free of charge this year as an elective alternative).  Also agreed that they had better get their fiscal house (and all process involving that) in order, and be transparent from here out.

So what point are you making here?

As for the audition fees the organization received for the 2023 season. Did those fees go to cover the salaries of the bingo workers? Was VMAPA behind in paying those salaries and ran the camp knowing they were not fielding a corps to keep bingo operation staffed?

Granted, this is only speculation, but based on preceding discussions I wouldn’t be shocked if this was proven to be true.

Those who paid to participate in 2023 should receive a refund for a portion of those fees.

Since SCV is a historical champion, we don't have to worry about that aspect of CI. So the question boils down to "When the competition is very close, does SCV still have enough CI to be given a slightly higher score than a new-comer who might otherwise deserve it?" (IOW, will SCV still be afforded "benefit of the doubt" when it's close?)

I say "Yes, absolutely." This is based on: 1) It was only one year off. No one will even remember this by next May. 2) Staff CI is still very strong, adding immense credibility to the organization going forward. Visual Design (Gaines) and Percussion (The Rennicks) will be world class champion competitors, no doubt. Daniel Riley has been Color Guard Caption Head for over 10 years. CI loves consistency.

I repeat: CI only matters when the judged caption in question is CLOSE. It's entirely possible that certain aspects of SCV will suck for lots of other reasons, making CI a moot point.

I get what you’re saying, but from what I can tell it appears DCI is applying a different set of rules to SCV’s return to the field than other corps that have sat out for a season, or two if you count 2020.

  5. While I don’t trust a word VMAPA puts out into the ether I do hope SCV can find a way to return to the competitive field in 2024.

My question has to do with “competitive inertia”. Will Vanguard be held back because of their failure to compete from the previous season or will they pick up from where they left off?

Love that movie. The score was so haunting and I totally think it could work in DCI. Musically I hear it as like a  modernized version of To Lasso The Sun (slow, threatening and ominous with lots of crescendos) with some great synth features. I can also imagine "I am become Death, destroyer of worlds" playing right before a brass hit. Call me crazy but I think this show concept could win the gold

Check out a recording of Dr. Atomic, the operatic version of the Oppenheimer story. If you’re open to opera, it’s a stunning production.

    Bobby Knight- hmmmm

True story - I did undergrad at Purdue in 1980s.  Indiana is rival; to make life interesting father-in-law was IU faculty (his daughter went to Purdue).

1991ish living in San Antonio.  They were visiting & watching IU game on TV.  My 3yr old daughter saw Bobby Knight on TV & says “Daddy says that man is the Antichrist.”   Perfect timing.  Wife not pleased.

    Ah, kids!

What's so funny is that I have what back then, was a weird, hybrid, east coast west coast blend. My private teacher back then was an SCV alum and our battery instructors were all SOA guys. The whole weak left hand thing came from a statement at an SOA camp where the comment was made that my left hand was too vertical to the head to not be weak on the downstroke. But it served the purpose. I could arm it, wrist it, legato it, open it up...whatever. Now everyone is a blended style so it's not as "weird."

But it made you who you are. There’s a lot of folks here who love you for that. SUTA brother!

I still can't get over the fact that only one short decade ago,  SCV was part of the G7 self proclaimed elite, attempting to take over DCI and exclude corps like the Boston Crusaders because they weren't worthy.  Whether you believe in God or karma, somebody was watching.  SCV did this to themselves.

This was totally uncalled for. Try not to confuse yesterday with today. Sounds like you have an axe to grind.

2nd notice from DOJ full letter

Don't know why Vanguard postponed their Board meeting (something about DCI rules and staff announcements), but their Board Treasurer has appears to have resigned as well, and this notice is only 3 days old.

This is not only unfortunate, it’s unconscionable. Why did this get to a second delinquency notice?

I dont disagree with this point of yours.

I even make the assessment that , on the whole, we are far, far more civil to DCI Judges as a fan base than the NFL fan base is to NFL refs..

After reading some of the vitriol that’s been posted here I’m rethinking the civil part of your post.

    Flame away!
