  1. Edit: This has been sold now. I'm not sure how to take this down. Admin? Used Yamaha mellophone (YMP204M) with case - Asking for $500 Case: This has been damaged slightly. It still closes securely and works fine for transportation and storage. Mellophone: Multiple dents, broken third waterkey, all valves move freely, valve caps open with ease and all the slides are free. Inclusions: Two mouthpieces (imitation kanstull m6, frank holton & co. 7c trumpet mouthpiece) I am the second owner of this instrument and received it with a number of dents and loss of some of the silver plating in the high-wear areas. The third water-key will not open, but there are always other ways to empty the horn. I don't believe this has affected the playability of the instrument and it has served me well in my preparations for WC drum corps auditions and the upcoming season. I am only selling this because I am moving overseas at the end of this season. Feel free to contact me with any questions. Shipping not included.
  2. That's my band! Yup, lot's of cross-pollination in terms of staff, and that includes brass, not just battery. It's not "just" teaching either, depending on the level of the staff involvement, the staff can develop strong relationships with Gary. Also, having been around the people who march at RCC, a lot of them will aim for (and some will make it) BD because it is one of the more "local" corps. Even if it's in northern california and RCC is in souther california. It's still closer than the cadets or crown!
  3. Boy oh boy am I glad to hear I won't be fighting my body for months! Thanks for the advice everyone. I know what you mean by taking in the experience.. being fast-tracked at RCC has meant I really don't remember much of the season at all. I also just went out and ran my 2 miles :) I guess I should make that a habit. Am I going to be in trouble if I took 18.5 minutes to run that? Also, I don't think the mello counts as a heavier instrument. True?
  4. Perc2100, thank you for the insight into the activity we call drum corps. As someone about to dive into a season of world class drum corps, with only one fall season of marching under the belt, I really appreciate knowing what to expect. Part of me now wants to aim for physical exhaustion at the end of every day, so I can acclimatise for drum corps. Am I being silly?
  5. lol. When I told my horn teacher I was coming to the states to drum corps, she says to me "Have you ever seen drumline? Watch it, just to get an idea of what you're getting yourself into"
  6. Thanks 84BDsop. I guess I'll pack this one up and just wait til I get there.
  7. Yes I'm back, did you miss me? Just wondering, do corps that don't make finals usually stick around to watch finals? I thought I'd ask, because as an overseas visitor coming to march drum corps, it would be really strange to finish early, have the corps disband and then realise that I didn't have anywhere to put up before I head back home. Also, for all those on dcp who've helped me with my numerous questions in the past, thank you so much. I'm going to be marching with the RCC marching tigers this fall and we'll see where we go from there
  8. lol. I could almost see the 0.00 mile coming. I'll work at it :D Ah good, a half hour 5k gives me something to aim for. I absolutely know what you mean by sooner rather than later. And how it's easier to maintain than rake back fitness. Fun times. It'll probably a case of butt-whooping either way, just a question of degrees. Also, I had to think for a moment when you used km instead of miles. Out of curiosity, does anyone use metric over there? I ask because I'm going to be doing engineering at college and I have a feeling it's going to be paaaaaaaainful. Not as painful as the 0.00 mile though. Haha, outside of pinwheels. I'm sort of used to being told like I always look like I'm moving with "urgency" because of my short legs turning over faster (or something). It's funny. I guess I'll just have to work at making looking good easy then. 0.00 mile.
  9. Ah good question. World class for sure. I think the actual corps changes every 2 months. I'm going to be living in socal, so it does make sense to stay in California. At the moment I'll probably be auditioning for scv and bd. Pc if I'm way out of the league for scv and bd. I referee touch rugby a lot in our summer (youtube "touch football" if you're at all interested), so I have at times been running for 3 and 6 hours at a time. That is 20 minute halves with a couple of minutes of breaks between halves and games. I'm guessing/hoping that will help for fitness/endurance, but I don't think I can hope to match that when I'm in the U.S. so it'll probably just be downhill from there. What would you do to work on endurance? Interval training? Just long jogs?
  10. *sigh* As someone who stands at 4'11" and is coming to the U.S. to march drum corps (and study for a year) this thread does concern me somewhat. Just getting that off my chest. But I have to agree that height differences don't look too good : ( Something else that caught my eye - timed miles. What would be a good time to be aiming for?
  11. If you want to speak in absolutes and say that person is only a professional when everything in their life is tailored to the highest level of dedication and performance in their chosen profession, then sure. But if I may just speak for myself, I don't want my occupation to be the entirety of my life and I think it is important that our professionals are multi-faceted. It would certainly help with getting our various industries working together more efficiently. Time to close methinks.
  12. Does that say SPF 70+?! I could definitely use that stuff in australia. We're the ones with the ozone hole after all, humph..
  13. Hmm, let me reiterate that, for the purposes of grades only, my home university GPA is preserved whilst I am attending UCI, contingent to whether I pass or fail. For the purposes of being a competent engineer upon graduation, yes, missing 3 weeks of lecture and tutorial attendance at a junior level is an issue. That said, my personal experience is that there is little which cannot be made up for by more diligent personal study at home. If this self-study is guided by a willing professor, then I would consider trading off 3 weeks of college attendance of move-ins. This is probably a cultural difference also. My mum's belief is that attendance equates directly to education, and I KNOW that this is often not the case for me. In some cases, I can sit through a lecture and not come away with the key points I need to do fulfil the syllabus requirements. In that same time, I could have been working through problems on my own at home, getting an understanding of the content from first principles and reinforcing content from the textbook. It's got something to do with the lecturer's style, their knowledge of the syllabus content (not knocking their overall knowledge at all) and where I am up to with my own study. And I do hear that the lecturing professors in the States are much more on top of their game with a genuine interest in teaching their students - something which is sometimes lacking here in Australia - so I do realise that this potentially does not translate well across the cultural contexts. I'll have to see when I get there. I feel as though we're going a bit off-topic, with broader comments on how to raise your child and the relevant consequences. Let's not go there. Yes, sometimes you can't get what you want despite all your efforts and hard work. That doesn't meant that trying to find a solution demonstrates an attitude of entitlement.
  14. I'm not even a rookie, so excuse this question, but what is the box?
  15. There do seem to be some interesting experiences with professors who want to fail their cohort and those who just want to push them through. I will have to assess my situation once I'm there, no point guessing all my professors will be axe-murderers. Donny, I am very grateful that Pioneer is an option and I hear great things about your corps, but it is corps like Phantom Regiment which first inspired me to pursue drum corps across the seas and I intend on giving them a shot first. I see Alex's point completely - I would be spewing if I was cut so that another member could miss 3 weeks of rehearsal when I could make all of them, and I would also be a bit annoyed if we couldn't rehearse properly because there a large mass of members missing. That said, it does happen so you just make the best of these situations I guess. Haha, I am a sports coach. Can you tell?
  16. Hi soccerguy, I will be taking 12 units with of subjects each quarters, which translates roughly to 3 subjects per quarter. This is the minimum I am allowed to take under the exchange program and I can't drop below that at any point in time due to student visa requirements. With that in mind, I can't overload one quarter and then underload the spring :( Most students at UCI take a load of around 16 units. To the best of my understanding, any subjects taken at UCI must be able to be credited back to my home university's degree. At presents, I am checking whether I can take some gen ed subjects in the spring quarter
  17. Ok, so for those of you who aren't familiar with my situation... 1. My name is Rachel 2. I live in Australia 3. I will be attending UC Irvine on university exchange from Fall 2010 - Spring 2011, and this is non-negotiable. Yes, it is a quarter system. 4. I chose to go on exchange to so I could do drum corps, self-funded. It's kind of a big deal! Additionally, my marks are credited back to my home university on a pass-fail basis. I don't intend on failing, but if I don't mind compromising my grades slightly. After all... I'm not travelling half-way around the world to stuff it all up by not attending rehearsals. The feedback is pretty consistent though. Talk to the professors and corps staff early. Thanks guys! p.s. I'm in the market for a mello and not at all picky. Just wanting something to start practising and get the hang of. I'm a french horn player you see.. Btw, are there any other wc corps other than SCV who prefer horn players for mello places?
  18. So I now know that I will be attending UCI (University of California, Irvine) the 2010-2011 academic year. I've started having a look at the academic quarter dates and finals and noticed that, if I may use phantom regiment as a yardstick, I would miss 3 weeks of move-ins due to college finals. I'd love to hear anyone's perspective and/or experiences on this and how it worked out. Rach
  19. Just wondering, are there any UC Irvine students out there who make the trip to RCC for the marching tigers. Or do you know of anyone who makes a trip along that route?
  20. For those late in on the conversation, and no offence intended, I'm visiting for a year so drum corps is priority.
  21. Thanks CaptnContra, I believe you've just sealed the deal for me. Davis, San Diego and Irvine it is. You guys are tops!
  22. Thanks captncontra and kath, your input was really, really helpful. I'm now really torn between Riverside and Irvine. Irvine for being close to all the LA drum corps and Riverside for having a nearby college marching band. Lucky they're only playing off for my 3rd preference. Can someone please confirm that drum corps don't provide any instruction of activity during fall? I've found the Santa Ana Youth Winds which would be helpful in learning to march, but I don't think I would do anything more in terms of teaching drill technique. Ideas? Also, thanks to everyone who's contributed, you're giving me some legs to stand on while making this decision.
  23. No problem, thanks for giving it a shot. I just want to clarify that I am attending UC, that much is set. With regards to Davis, I'm wondering whether I should preference San Diego first, or Davis. The reason being that I'm a biomedical engineering major, and SD has a really good rep in the field, and that there's SDSU's band, 16.6 miles from campus which I could join (says the website). If it were completely me, I'd just choose Davis, but my mum is very disapproving of my primary reason for exchange being drum corps. The other thing is I'm kind of worried about hazing within the aggie band which showed when I googled Davis. I'm not sure whether to regard this as blown up tension between the director and the students, or whether there is really an unhealthy culture within the band.
  24. Hi Sop, thanks for your help again. Do these area drum corps run programs during the fall-winter period as well? I'm really just looking for a means of getting into the thick of the summer 2011 DCI season. I did come across RCC. I'm not really familiar with the system of completing lower division courses at community colleges, then later transferring into larger (more prestigious?) universities. Given these colleges look like they're just to fill in gen ed and early prerequisites, maybe I could enrol in just the marching band course. Any ideas? I'd still be interested to see if anyone else has some local marching bands they're aware of. Edit: Santa Cruz doesn't offer the mechanical and biomedical engineering subjects I need to be eligible. While I'm at it, Berkeley and LA were full, SF is a grad med school, merced didn't have any bands I found
  25. Hi everyone, I've just found out I'll be coming to California on a university exchange in August 2010. I need to sub-preference campuses from the UC system. I've already chosen San Diego and Davis, but I need to pick one other out of Irvine, Merced, Riverside and Santa Barbara. I've already looked and none of them have great marching bands so I'm hoping people can tell me about bands in areas surrounding these campuses. p.s. I need to get these preferences done within a couple of days, so if you've got anything at all, please just shout it out! Rach
