  1. Oh, so you're saying that in order to really get stuff done, you have to beat the kids? I've heard of the beatings that some drum corps instructors from the east coast area put on their students so, I guess that approach does work? Shoot, I sure wish I could get away with that at my job.... I always have to have band pizza parties and hand out candy and cake. There would be a revolt if I didn't wipe their bums and tell them how great are all the time. How is the parent situation? Do they run the drum corps like they do at band? Does the director of a drum corps have to take the parent's advice and put it to work in order to keep his/her job? I am learning so much from you all. This will help me to be a better marching band director. Any takers?
  2. I don't mean any harm, I am just saying that Surf percussion is the Doo-Doo from what my band guy ears tell me. Maybe I should have marched when I was a kid. I got cut from the only place I ever tried to and that was from the hornline... Still though, I know good drumming when I hear it. My college band drumline was AWESOME! Go Surf!
  3. I saw a video of Teal from their Jan. camp. They look like they may be in the top 5 or 6. The vid I saw was mostly of the drumline who is playing a lot more aggressively than last year. Is there a new caption head there or did that big dude get some lessons from Surf on how to write drum parts?
  4. Don't hate, dude. Everyone knows that Surf's percussion section is the benchmark for Div II/III (Open Class). Maybe if you Div II/III guys could figure it out and get more educators like the ones on their staff, it wouldn't be such a shamin' place for kids to march... Can I get a witness or are there other programs that offer such quality instruction? Any takers?
  5. He's hot! What ever happened to those glory days? As an avid fan, I miss the showmanship of DCA. It seems now like everyone is selling out by trying to beat the Reading BUCS. Try winning the game by your own rules, people. Set your own NEW trends. Go CABS!!!
  6. Gosh, you are a mean person. I'll bet you're a blast at a judge's meeting... For your information, Buster..... I toured with a corps working on a cook truck once and from what I observed, the techs (percussion and guard, that is) worked every block while the caption heads slept in and then yelled at the kids for not being energetic at the high noon portion of the rehearsal days. Has this ever happened to anyone else or was my experience unusual? Whatever the case, it sure left a bad taste in my mouth and the kids didn't seem to like it too much either. They are the customers, right??? Are there any caption heads out there that are nice to their kids and motivate them with encouragement and quality information? As a band director, I always appreciate the more positive approach to the educational process. Don't you agree, Mr. Meanie-Pants?
  7. It would be a good thing to see a knock down, drag out at the end of the season. The 3 fans in the stands would get way more than they expected, anyway. I went to Div II/III finals last year in Pasadena. I am a band director and for me, it was shamefully empty in the stands while the kids played their hearts out. Hmm, that just gave me a great idea..... Maybe they should have all caption heads warm up their programs during prelims/finals and let their tech staffs sit in the stands and pretend to be the crowd that should have been there to begin with. From what I hear, it's the techs that do all the work anyways....you all deserve a day to celebrate your student's performances. While you're there, you can cheer for the other groups as well. Is that too feel good and marching bandy of me to ask? Any takers?
  8. I am sure the whole drum corps community is excited to see what Teal can do as a "real" drum corps. I hear the design team is wicked good. Look out open class! World class, make room! Go Teal!
  9. As a band director, I can say that the maturity of the Cabs hornline was quite impressive last season. I am anxious to see what sounds are created this year. Rock on, Hornline!
  10. You guys used to have the best drum major! The guy that wore the shiny stuff, I don't know his name...
  11. How's it goin with Jeff Moore at Kilties? Awesome I would imagine.....
  12. If the guest performers get paid a few bucks and get performance experience in a different setting, you can't go wrong. It gives marching percussion yet another positive representation. Yeah, Keith Urban!
