SO........we have this new cat. Showed up at our door, just a stray, a vagabond, if you will. So his name........his name became General Butler. As in, "General Butler (the) Vagabond". Only Drum Corps people, especially old school Drum Corps people, get this.

We truly miss the old days. Thank you all so much for posting these awesome memories. We mourn the loss of these great Drum and Bugle Corps and the traditions left behind. Some of us cannot possibly relate to today's "Drum Corps". From the uniforms that are all just slight variations of the same, to the music which is not identifiable, to the dancing, emoting, out of synch guards and the electronics that make it all seem just like marching band. We're so sad to see what has become of the activity we held so dear. I realize that some of you are comfortable with the current state of the activity, and that's just fine............some of us would prefer to remember the way it was and enjoy the memories here posted. Thank you, thank you, for giving us these wonderful snapshots of the great and glorious past of the great Drum and Bugle Corps that are gone now.

1. I don't know, did it matter, back in the day? Let's see, we had alumni from some top 12 corps, some local musician guys, some age outs from our own corps. People who loved us, who loved Drum Corps, and who worked insane hours, took care of us, and were selfless and caring. 2. Lots...........We also saw it as an inconvenience and a reason to shrug our shoulders, shake our heads, joke about the circumstances, and go to sleep in our sleeping bags along the roadside because there was nothing we could do about it anyway. 3. Let's see..........Scrambled eggs with bacon, cereal, Bug juice, yummy sandwiches, Donald Duck Juice, whatever our cooks could come up with using their ingenuity and their limited budgets, and all topped off with love, dedication and good wishes. 4. And who had camps for hockey, volleyball, soccer and cheerleading? Never heard of such a thing where I lived. Football and basketball, maybe, but those were supported by fundraising by caring parents and citizens the same as Drum Corps. 5. All the members were local, or at least within 40 miles. All supported by people who were local, or at least within 40 miles. I think that's a good way to run a local youth organization. It sure helped me to be who I am today.

Does anyone remember these? Speaking of miniature headgear, these were little Phantom helmets to store your used chewing gum.

I have, for 30 years, regretted not buying a Phantom Regiment Helmet gum saver.

What? DCI is working to reverse Drum Corps' obscurity? I think DCI is trying to make Drum Corps more elitist. Fewer people know about the activity because fewer people are involved. DCI is NOT encouraging the development of more Drum Corps! Seems to me that they are more interested in paring down the activity to an elite few. Just my humble opinion.

Most importantly.......is it pronounced "RAM-D" or, "RAMMED"? It's almost as if we've become insensitive to what's important here!

Now, come on..........you're too young to say that. There's Viagra. There are some herbal concoctions. There is hypnosis, therapy, all kinds of psychological help. It'll be OK.

Call me a naysayer, call me a Doubting Thomas, call me late for dinner. I don't belive Terrance is his real name. Really. Check it out. There is a sports guy, maybe a basketball player, a (possibly) well known personality named Terrance I. McGee. Is this guy who used to post on DCP an imposter, or is it really the famous athlete that is trying to pretend that he is a fan of Drum Corps?

Even before the Bluecoats went inactive in 1979, I wanted to try out for Phantom Regiment. I didn't have the confidence to think I was worthy. In hindsight, I probably could've made the flagline. I was pretty talented and disciplined, thanks to the skills I was given in the Bluecoats of old. I went on to other things, but always regretted not trying. I had to live vicariously through my boyfriend who was the Baritone soloist for the Madison Scouts in 1981 and 1982. Not the same, though. Someday, we could (!), march in the Kilties. If we moved to Wisconsin, from Oklahoma. If we won the lottery. If we were independently wealthy. If we weren't new parents in our mid-forties. Wait, that's no regret!

I think that his "profile" is *BS*. You all DID want to know what I think, didn't you? Back in the day, when Terrance was active, I had this crazy curiosity about him. I Googled, like many of you, and this is what I found: He wanted folks to believe that he was 1. African-American 2. Into: A. Drum Corps B. Martial Arts C. Christianity D. Sword fighting E. Animie (sp) 3 Teacher (OMG, Noooooooooo) 4. Had the same name as some professional athlete (Basketball, maybe) 5. From Houma, Louisiana Some possibly true. Most, more than likely, not. What I would love to see is for us to reconstruct a more realistic "profile" for him. Terrance I. McGee - dreamer, wannabe, pretender, potential serial murderer. Come on, folks, give Terrance a chance to be a real, sympathetic human. Give him a more identifiable persona. P.S. All this from me, a lurker who can't even post on topics that really mean something, because I am afraid that I will split a gut all over this forum. All emotional when the topic is Drum Corps, but give me Terrance I. McGee and I will jump all over that topic.

You know, to me, this sounds like the kind of opportunity we had in the "old days". A chance to march, but you had to earn your way. We had raffles, rock-a-thons, fill the boot, and we sold lightbulbs, fire extinguishers and candy bars. We were "paid - 10 dollars" to bring in members who had at least a little bit of horn or percussion experience, because we had very generous benefactors. Some of us were pulled in "off the streets" to learn what we were to do. I had no experience with spinning a flag, but I was so impressed with the training and discipline of Drum Corps that I was willing to learn whatever they were willing to teach me! More power to the Spirit of Newark. That's what Drum Corps should be all about. KUDOS!

"Highly biased and inflammatory"? Are you kidding? Read carefully. This person is speaking in generalities. He has not based any of his opinions on any specificities. He is talking out of his proverbial ---(animal also referred to as a donkey). He reminds me in no small way of the person formerly known as TERRANCE. This goes beyond any biases on electronics and amplification. This is about people responding to TROLLS! Geez!!!!!!! Oh, wait..................I am responding to TROLLS..........never mind

IMHO, "Trolls" are people who just show up on a forum and post crap to get people to respond angrily. They don't really care about the subject. Again, in my HUMBLE opinion, most anti-amp people are those "old school people" (note the quotation marks) who have been there, done that, and are against artificial methods of musical projection. They do have a legitimate opinion based on their own experience in the activity, whether that be as participant or fan in the stands. Please do not confuse trolls with those with a legitimate point of view. You may not agree but please give credit to folks with experience and love for Drum Corps, whatever it's form.

Um.....no......most of the anti-amp posters on DCP are just that. Anti-amp. Trolls are the people who pretend they know something about something they know NOTHING about. Most anti-amp people know what they are talking about. *Just saying*

I'll be in the flag line, as long as there is no "emoting", no silly waving, no leaping, no foo-foo dancing and no vocals. Just equipment work and real marching, thank you. I vote for Black boots, skirts and no bodysuits or "costumes". Old School all the way, baby!
