  1. 29 years actually. 1979 - present...

I think the 28 years thing is how long it has been since the Blue Stars advanced into a D1 finals show after competing in prelims. This happened at least twice in 1980. You are correct that it has been 29 years since the Blue Stars last world championship finals.

  2. I don't have access to the video from where I am right now, but I assume when I can view it later today at my hotel I'll probably be balling like a baby. WHY? Because THIS is what the spirit of drum corps is all about. I absolutely LOVE the activity because of stories like this. I don't know much about the Blue Stars but it sure is exciting to see this happening.

Good job you guys!! From an olllllllllllllld VK'er....

Maybe we will see VK back in World Class in the not too distant future.

  3. A good portion of the M&M staff was in the stands near me when the score was announced at prelims. If I recall, the Blue Stars were one of the last corps on that afternoon. I'll never forget the shocked look on the faces of those staff members. It was obvious they thought the corps was a lock to get into finals.

Like many others, I can only congratulate those members who kept the faith in the years that followed. The Blue Stars had made such a selling point of being one of two corps to make finals up to that point that I was very concerned the whole organization would fall apart like a house of cards when they finished 13th. Obviously, they were hanging their helmets on more than a number. Whether they make it in this year or not, the entire Blue Star community has a lot to be proud of.

We went on last in prelims in 1980. Right after 27th Lancers. It was HOT that day.

Something only those associated with the corps would know - we gave one last full uniform performance later that night in Talledaga for the staff and anyone else hanging around. The members did not want a somewhat lackluster show being the final performance in 1980. With a thunderstorm rolling in from the west (and the temps much cooler), the 1980 Blue Stars finished the year in a very emotional way. I would love to hear (or see) the show we put on a few hours after placing 13th.

  4. The Blue Stars posted a video on their fan network today of the corps director, Brad Furlano, speaking to the corps before the San Antonio night show. It appears as if he got quite emotional while telling the kids that this would be the first World Class (D1) finals show for the Blue Stars in 28 years.

I think it is remarkable what the Blue Stars are close to pulling off this year. What a great story. Thank you to all the kids who marched, staff and volunteers who kept the corps going (and in such a quality manner) after they dropped to DIII (and DII). I hope all the alumni who marched during the past 40 plus years are enjoying this season.

  5. For what it's worth...

Will the Scouts make finals, YES

    Will the Crossmen, MAYBE

In my opinion there are a few shows that do not have the legs to make that final push and sustain through August.

IMHO, I think the Colts and Spirit are done. I also think that the Cadets are done-I am not saying they will fall out of finals, obviously, but I would say 5-6 is their range.

I also believe the Bluecoats have peaked-as they did last year.

As far as the corps in the 9-12 range-after San Antonio-I think the Blue Stars are done-that show can't go any further, Boston is done, although they may be able to sustain.

Glassmen are also done. I think both Glassmen and Blue Stars will actually fall out of finals contention, and that Madison will pick up 11th and Crossmen 12th.

Just my opinion after watching these shows.

Not to say these corps are not great or doing well, I just don't feel that the shows have enough to clean to give them that push. Considering the fact that all the corps I listed are already performing great, corps like Madison and Crossmen who have been making strides, still have more they can do with their program that will give them the push.

    Just my thoughts.

This might be the funniest post ever on DCP. Thank you.

  6. A week or so ago everyone was saying BK was out of finals with Blue Stars having clipped them early a time or two. So much for that now with BK up on Blue Stars by 4+/- points.

Up 4 points when the two corps have not competed against each other since 7/2 (Blue Knights won that battle by .5)? If you really want to compare scores from different shows, then tonight the Blue Knights are up on the Blue Stars by, wait for it...., .6. That is a far cry from four points.

Really, all this comparison from different shows is silly. Saturday will be the first day we truly know where all corps stand relative to other corps.

  7. I think we are going to see G-men pass Blue Stars again at San Antonio. They have been closing the gap all week.

Well, it was .325 last Saturday in Orlando and .2 tonight. Not seeing a lot of movement in the spread so far this week. I also think you should take into consideration the time at which each corps performed. The Blue Stars were before intermission and the Glassmen were the second corps after. That does have some influence on the scores. Saturday will be intersting as the two corps perform back to back. I would expect an accurate and fair result.

  8. I wish you would have marched in 82 when we were picking up the pieces. We held our heads high, even though we were half the corps we were the year before. I learned what Drum Corps really was that year. By the way, how was puker 80? Puker 82 was a blast!

The first rule of Puker, is that you don't talk about Puker in a public forum. :w00t:

It was, however, great. Champagne breakfast up on the bluffs to start the day, followed by the usual - opening ceremony, brewery tour, picnic, dance. All and all a great effort by a brilliant Puker committee.

    PS - I aged out in 1981.

  9. Non taken, and please don't be offended by my comments. I did not march 80, but did march with many members from 80. That was some of their assessments. Paying homage to Mcjordansc.

I don't want to come off as too harsh, so my apologizes if I did, but I remember a fairly hard working corps in 1980. We were much less experienced than 1979 and to some degree not pushed quite as hard by the staff. Unfortunately, it caught up with us that year.

  10. Judging does not cater to a conspiracy on who "should be" in finals this year. Back when the Blue Stars did not make finals in 80, North Star did. Who had the better show? Was there a push to get North Star in? No, we were arrogant. Yes, I said it. We were. Then we have not seen finals since. This corps is hungry, and deserving.

    The end crowns the work

No offense, but did you march in 1980? I did, and we were far from arrogant. We struggled early because we did not do a first tour. We never really caught up. We knew it was close going into prelims and drawing the last prelims spot on a hot afternoon immediately following a hotter 27th Lancers did us in. It certainly was not arrogance.

  11. I see something this year that seems similar to what happened in 99. I was at finals in 99 in Madison, and had a great time. I had been told there was a push to get Boston into finals that year. I saw the Boston show that year, and while I really enjoyed it but didn't find it to be any better than Bluecoats, Colts, Crown or Crossmen, all corps they beat that year. It almost seems like each judge in their push to get them in, overscored them a little bit, and instead of being in 12th or 13th, ended up in 9th.

This year, from what I have seen of Blue Stars, they definitely deserve to probably make finals. But it just seems like the last weeks push up in scores for them, the judges are maybe overscoring them just a little bit. I have seen Spirit, Colts, and Blue Stars live a couple of times now. I really feel like the performance level, and show designs put Blue Stars and Colts on a level, and Spirit on a level about 3 points back. But once again, in the push to get someone into finals, it just seems like Blue Stars are getting a few bonus points towards that goal. I really love their show, but just think it is getting a little extra scoring push. I can't wait to see everyone online at the next big show, but I think a 3.6 lead over the Colts right now just seems a little off.

Did you see the show tonight? I know the Blue Stars added a great deal to their show this week and they had two full days without a show to practice. My guess is that is paying off for them right now.

With that being said, they do have some staff that came over from Boston this year.

  12. Now I didn't see the show tonight, but it just seems odd that Colts are so far behind Blue Stars. I have seen both shows a couple of times, and really felt Colts and Blue Stars have shows that are close and much above Spirit. I thought when they were flip flopping it was probably accurate, but now kind of wonder if something is a little odd.

Blue Stars must have really taken advantage of their practice days this week. Obviously, they have made some additions to their show that are really paying off. It is nice to see the Stars seriously in the hunt for a single digit placing at finals. It is unbelievable that a corps might be back in finals after a 29 year absence - that is no doubt a record (if it happens) that will probably never be broken.

  13. It will be interesting to see if the Blue Stars can close the gap on the Glassmen and Colts in Music Ensemble tonight. I am sure the Stars made good use of their days off this week cleaning their show. I am also looking forward to seeing if the gap between Boston and the three corps behind them is smaller. I hope the weather holds.

I guess we now know that the Blue Stars used their practice days in very good way. Congratulations to the Stars.

  14. Sitting in the press box at Milton and the weather here is nearly perfect.

We had some light rain about an hour before the show started, and a few sprinkles about 6:25, but the show started right on time at 6:30.

Alliance and CorpVets have done their shows, and Teal Sound is almost done.

Temp. is about 78 degrees, the dark, ugly clouds have all moved on, the sun is out in the west and it is a BEAUTIFUL night for drum corps in the South!

    Great news!

  16. 1. Blue Devils - Concord, CA

    2. Phantom Regiment - Rockford, IL

    3. Santa Clara Vanguard - Santa Clara, CA

    4. Blue Knights - Denver, CO

    5. Madison Scouts - Madison, WI

    6. Crossmen - San Antonio, TX

    7. Pacific Crest - Diamond Bar, CA

    8. Mandarins - Sacramento, CA

    9. Pioneer - Milwaukee, WI

  17. I think the top twelve is starting to take shape and I am unsure if there will be any drama in August in regards to who makes finals. In my opinion, it will be:

Cavaliers and Blue Devils fighting for first

PR in at third, but a darkhorse for the top spot

    SCV alone in fourth

Cadets and Crown fighting for fifth

    Bluecoats in seventh

I think there will be a fight for places eight through eleven between Boston, Glassmen, Blue Stars and Blue Knights

I see the Colts in the final Saturday night spot, but I do not think they will receive much pressure from any corps behind them Friday night.

  18. I'm not familiar with the region and distances, but how far is Louisville from Indy or Bloomington? If it could somehow be worked out, I think DCI might be better off trying to stay in Indiana as opposed to going out of state.

Regardless, it's definitely in their best interests at this point to have a Plan C.

A little over 100 miles from Bloomington, 115 miles from Indy.
