  1. For the past few years I have written posts that include the words "this is my opinion and opinion only. They do not reflect the opinion of any organization with which I may be associated". I am doing the same thing here. Revisiting the past is relevant and can be useful, but I think it's time that we realize that this is 2007 and there is nowhere to look forward. I did not agree with my fellow Board members, and that's OK. I cannot think of any reason to continually pull scabs off wounds. It was counterproductive in 2003 and it is now. My hope is that the entire 2007 Madison Scouts family, including Sal, has a successful year, regardless of the measuring stick they choose to use. Success comes in many forms, and we need to respect that. MYNWA has to mean something...live the motto.
  2. Re-Read your original post and look for the All Caps. You emphatically gave untrue information from your own perspective. "INCLUDING for our home show which was held at LaFollette HS. We bussed in and out for that show. Every time we were close to Madison we stayed well outside the reach of the Madison school district. That may have changed in '06, but it wasn't the case in '05 nor in the 2 years prior, to my knowledge... the importance of their close relationship with the City of Madison. For everything that everyone wants to say about Scott Stewart, the very LEAST of the good things that can be said is that he had as close a relationship with the respective parent city as any corps in DCI. Something that has suffered in recent years...and that's fact as well.". It's hard to misinperpret your written word. I gave information from an informed and objective perspective in defense of people who worked incredibily hard and who dedicated a lot of time.
  3. The Madison Metropolitan School District charges an exorbitant amount for school rental, yet the Scouts held there Winter camps in Madison Schools. Spring Training was held in Whitewater because the facility could accommodate the need for multiple rehearsal fields, and housing. The City of Madison is filled with people who hate the noise created by drum corps. Neighbors around Camp Randal protest the corps everything DCI comes to town. The last three Drums of Parade shows were held at Madison High Schools. LaFollette and Memorial are in the City of Madison. The Scouts' last camp was held at the “Madison Country Day School in Waunakee, WI, a suburb of Madison” (from Madison’s website). Last year, the Scouts played at the start of the Madison Marathon, participated in the opening weekend of the City’s Sesquicentennial celebration, and played at the World’s Largest Brat Fry (2nd year). There are no parades in Madison other than the UW Home Coming parade. Here is what the City does for the Scouts…will not discount rental fees for facility rental, will not tolerate the “noise” from rehearsals, and they give the corps a $6,000.00 grant each year. The same amount they give Capital Sound. Juxtapose that with Rosemont, where they support the Cavies in such a way that Jeff and the gang go back often because of the tremendous financial support. It interferes with the logical flow of their tours, but the payoff is well worth the inconvenience. The past administration was starting to do more within the City than had been done in a while. Your comment that the corps is now doing something that wasn’t done before is asinine since the Scouts currently hold their camps outside the City limits. Now, the smart thing to do would be to ask why the corps must look outside the City of Madison. The answer, the City (not necessarily the citizenry, but the people in charge) gives a rat’s butt about the Madison Scouts or Drum Corps as a whole. It’s cheaper to stay outside Madison.
  4. Although he marched down the road a bit from where I marched, I'd like everyone to wish Greg Newell a Happy Birthday. I'll be smoking a Rocky Patel 1992 Vintage in your honor, Greg! Long ashes to you, and Happy Birthday!!! M
  5. com·pe·ti·tion [ kòmpə tísh'n ] noun Definition: 1. process of trying to beat others: the process of trying to win or do better than others
  6. I would say march for a different reason (I know the issue is solved, but...). Grad school really should come after spending some time in the work force. Even law school would be a better experieince if you can bring some reality to the classroom. Medical school...I don't know. A lot of professors have never left campus and have an unrealistic view of the world. Had they left the sheltered life of academia, they would encourage students to leave for a bit before coming back. I teach future cops and other criminal justice professionals, and they would be better served by maturing and gaining life experience that leads to a more empathetic attitude. Experience almost alwas trumps education alone.
  7. It is the new era, Todd. When I started in drum corps it was a very local and somewhat regional activity. I fell in love with Madison in 1975 as an 11 year old and would have never marched for anyone else. Now, with all the web based information and television exposure, guys are going to the corps that best fits their style, and at times that means the instructor's style and technique. As for following staff, that has happened for a long time, but usually not on a grand scale like may have happened here. The thing is, our drummers from the last few years came to Madison because of Colin, Ian, and Pete. I guess it should be expected that they would continue to follow those guys.
  8. September 5, 2006 Dear Madison Scouts Drum & Bugle Corps Association Members, The Madison Scouts Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Jeff Spanos has been elected as the Executive Director of the Madison Scouts. We are extremely excited about Jeff’s involvement in the organization and, as you get to know him, you will share our enthusiasm. Jeff’s involvement in the Madison Scouts started in 1989 as a snare drummer in the Madison Junior Scouts. He aged-out of the Scouts in 1995 after six seasons and continued his involvement on the instructional staff from 1999 through 2003. Aside from his rich history with the corps, he has also been a featured performer with BLAST! and has worked for Drum Corps World, Yamaha Corporation of America and Lincoln Financial. We believe Jeff possesses the attributes necessary to lead this organization. While his drum corps and business backgrounds impressed us, his communication skills, open-minded nature and flexibility, combined with his competitiveness and focus on what needs to be accomplished to further enhance the organization, helped make this an easier decision for us. During the coming days, there is much work to be done for the 2007 season and beyond. We realize you have many questions and encourage you to contact Jeff Spanos at (executivedirector@madisonscouts.org). While Jeff spends the next several days getting acclimated to the organization’s day-to-day operations, please be patient but rest assured that your questions will be answered as quickly as possible. In the meantime, expect to be communicated with by either Jeff or the Board about important developments. Thank you for your patience and confidence during this transition. We realize that change is never easy, and we also realize that we must do a better job of communicating with you. We look forward to building better relationships and a stronger organization. Respectfully, Madison Scouts Board of Directors Jeff Manion, President (alumnus) Connie Ferris-Bailey Thomas Moffatt Joe Murray (alumnus) Dave Heilman Steve Vickers Steve Matson (alumnus) Gregg Auby (alumnus) Randy Ferrie (alumnus) Steven Heck
  9. FYI. MDBCA By-Laws state that to be eligible for election to the Board, you must have previously served on the Board in some fashion (appointed or elected). That makes the list of potential candidates much smaller. Jeff Manion is the current President.
  10. Very flattering comments guys, but I can think of a dozen reasons why I shouldn't be the director of the Madison Scouts...and at least 135 reasons why it would be the greatest job in the world!
