  1. Uh, ?? 135 water jugs on the sideline during water breaks/gush-n-go's? HELLO?!?! -- its not like 1 more "container holding water" is gonna throw a major wrench into the production, there are already 135... this is nothing new. Not to mention RAIN. and when was the last time someone tripped on an amp wire..?! - your assumptions are better fit for a 3-stooges act. [Curly trips holding water jug and throws it all over Moe.] "Why I oughta..." *slap* *fwip!* *boioioionnggg*
  2. So is that a yes or no to my question. -- you say students tend to develop a slice, and thats precisely what I want to avoid, however if the alternative is a vertical y-axis stroke, but loses rebound b/c of the angle of the drum, then I think I'd take the slice. Elaborate a little more..?
  3. Cadets will invariably find a way to screw this up. ... yeah .. i went there. sorry. [edit:] I have a much more offensive punchline... but in the interest of not being banned from the forums I'll just laugh evil'ly to myself.
  4. 148 guard and 1 synth leaves one spot open... perhaps you're in need of an experienced flaming baton juggling act on the 50..?
  5. Disagree w/ sentence 1, Agree w/ sentence 2.
  6. and that as they say, is that. Gimmick talk done. winner. I'm more interested in any potential loss of rebound from the right hand. As discussed earlier, if I was to implement this w/ my h.s., should I verbally say "change your right hand stroke such that it rebounds perpendicular to the head" ?? or is the difference so minor it doesnt effect technique?
  7. breathing block is the sole reason I am constantly in awe of horn players. They wonder how we drum such crazy licks, I wonder why I can't make it 5 minutes in breathing block. Props to the hornline. p.s. why hasn't this topic gotten more attention?!?
  8. I'm willing to bet that by next summer many of us will be marveling at the creative use, range of sounds and colors produced EFFECTIVELY as per show. I'm kindve excited to see who does it best .
  9. Well, I'm still ripe pre-1990, so I'll only comment on >1990. 93 star. duh. skip 96, 97, 98 and 99, and just show the entire 95 championships. 00 cavaliers.. 04 SCV.. come ON switch 05 and 06 no opinion 07/08. well, I take it back, no cadets. thats the only rule.
  10. I laughed out loud at work... evil glares all around... haaa. I was like mad fist pump..? disappointment..?! whats he doing!!!!?? then just... mm hhmmmmm. perfect.
  11. was the case for us. although staff had trumping ability if they didn't find it... "fan friendly.." (coke vis... not-so-subtle sexual innuendos.. ) or if it made an attack go out the window (attack from sticks above head). but most were fine. if anything we were most disagreeable when other sections tried to hijack a quad vis, or whether or not to make it a full line visual.
  12. On behalf of Adam (aside from talkin to B this weekend), yes Estes will be there.
  13. Agreed. I think its perfectly ok. Keep in mind, odds are unless you've never played your instrument for, they probably wont cut you, but will let you come back and see how you've improved. If youre serious about that corps, you dont wanna miss a call back. That being said, the different corps' camps probably have a decent chance of falling on the same weekend. seems thats always how it works out . So it's up to you to decide which one you really want to play for, and go for it.
  14. I never had any conflicts, except that by the time I'd get back to my campus the monday after finals, that was the same monday we start "hell week" for college marching band. But if your college tech knows anything about corps life s/he'll willingly excuse you for a few hours.... - and what jacquesb said. not that we were good enough to get very far in any big'ish tournaments :(
  15. I'm not sure about this. I think [for once in my life] I'd hate to be murray gusseck. Instead of having people that are truly serious about auditioning go through the minimal effort of proving their desire to come play for SCV, now little bobby, who was no doubt section leader in high school can just send a you tube link to murray gusseck saying "check me out." I could foresee a billion wasted hours watching players that thought it'd just be cool to get some feedback from murray. On the other hand the video promo with technique advice is GREAT. tangible, visible, audible how-to's on scv's approach to percussion - great confidence builder for an unsure candidate. I just dont like the video audition submission idea.
  16. agree to disagree. I see your point quite clearly - but my rationale of though was something like: any old person can get a DUI any day of the week. but Heather Lockleare gets one and its all over america. similarly.. a niche activity has reports of hazing vs. a brand name university. which one gets the spotlight??
  17. Ask yourself this: where do you want to march. think about the answer. practice as necessary. ...go there.
  18. Yes, it happens in universities and DCI both. that was not my argument. My point was the UW suspension should not be such a shocker. It was not a first offense, it was at least a 3rd, and they were on probation. How many warnings should they get before an actual punishment? DCI has similar antics/hazing/behavior going on, but unless its taken out of the corps "bubble" (i.e. retreat, encore, whatever) then it is dramatically scaled down and no one sees it except those involved, let alone in an activity that the average joe schmoe on the street has never heard of. Collegiate athletics is a slightly different story.
  19. I was in the Iowa band a couple years ago... and I know a handful of people in the UW band. I'm not sure why so many people are referencing drum corps - this is nothing of the sort. In fact, UW might have (aside from the southern style bands..) one of the most non-drum corps'esque shows in the country: AND, they're RENOUNED for it. If you're talking about age correlation, fair enough. But contextually, they're not even close. You talk about rookie talent night, whatnot. Yeah, the busride "antics" (on assorted extremity levels) happen, but youre not representing a big10 university. They have a lot more riding on what happens. I can make it simple for yall. In 2006 they were put on probation for their away trip. Their behavior respawned itself on the bowl trip. This new suspension is by virtue of that probation. This is not new stuff, it was a 3rd, 4th, whatever chance. Someone said it in an earlier post... can you really just IGNORE what was going on?? ..no. They had this coming I'm afraid. That being said, I'm not being a hypocrite, we were no model students at iowa either. we got into the milk & cookies on our trips as well, in fact, some of the unnamed grad-staff got rowdy with us. Hotels no doubt dreaded 240 college kids in a centralized location (sorry about that bathroom sink, ann arbor... and the pillow case incident.). I think this was a necessary means to send a message to chill the F out. Have fun... within reason. or at least dont break ####.
  20. Must admit, by the topic, not what I thought this would be about
  21. The staff did not go get drunk last night, and are not taking their hangover and/or failed attempts at hooking up out on the battery.
