  1. 05 scouts signed a contract not to get fresh w/ Carmen.
  2. So heres a fun one: which corps is now the most BD ...?? Bloocoats: jackson/jackson Madison: carter/brohard BD: scojo/?
  3. i responded to your PM... but it doesnt appear in my sent messages, just checkin if you got it. -- i stand by however, I don't believe any Midwestern BOA band I've seen could hang in DCI, save for example, Irondale you have listed above. I know many of their staff and their program is consistently leap years above most of their competition - in iowa at least.
  4. News to me! kind've a shame, I feel like their battery has been their saving grace last couple years. whew! LOVED their sound since Mac came to canton! some big shoes to fill if you ask me...
  5. I stopped reading after this... WOW... really.?!? most boring year since mid 90s.. hm. Ok i read a little further. I'm from Iowa, I teach a big'ish school in Iowa, and I'd love to know what band you're talking about. enlighten me.
  6. Breakfast burritos... didnt eat anything til lunch those days... blehgh!!!! Pretty sure I kept Jiff in business though most of the summer.
  7. All in favor of the OP's idea say "I" .... [/thread]
  8. You dont have to answer this, but I don't feel like webMD'ing today. Could you tell us some specifics of chrohns disease. My friend has it, and made the same corps with me. In march he had a "flare up" and spent a week in the hospital and that was that for his summer hopes. All I really know is that its some sort of immune defect and that you have to take like 15 pills a day..? enlighten me? what are the real life risks? symptoms? causes? Again, no response necessary if you don't want. As far as athleticism: I wish more people (myself included) would do the work necessary in the offseason to prepare for everydays/tour. You can do nothing but HELP your section and corps by being in shape. If this means a mile a day, start there. set SMART goals. try to beat your time the next week. try to run another quarter mile. try to beat THAT the next week. Motivation is tough when you train alone, but if you wanna march YOU have to make it happen . and for the record, im POSITIVE there were consistently a couple people who marched w/ me that probably couldn't finish a 15 minute mile. then again, they werent around the next season.. ;)
  9. Wasn't Gail Royer of SCV part of this as well..? no..? Don Warren gave his premium seat tickets to myself and my lady friend at naperville this year, top row on the 50. What a guy. Thanks for always being a great ambassador and everything he's accomplished for the activity!!
  10. wow, recent phantom media that hasn't gotten taken down because of copyright violations??
  11. I'll be the first to admit I hate being wrong, but when its so blatant I have to speak up: DanTheOldMan... I'm sorry, but you're flat out wrong on a couple things. Tuning of the drums IS on the scoresheet!!!!!!!!!!! C'mon. I've spoke with judges more than once about this after my high school kids' performances. one judge docked us b/c he didn't like our short bass tuning range, and then I had to explain that our bass 5 quit the week before. another time we blew 5 tenor heads in the lot. cranking new heads will do absolutely nothing in that situation. the drumheads fell flat and were way out of tune, and he called us on it. The drum angle thing i don't know about. Tuning though, totally fair game. Wow. Is no one else going to call this one out...?!?! It is VERY POSSIBLE 9 are cleaner than 7. I don't mean to be so direct, but I can't fathom your rationale here? Can you explain how its impossible..!?! seriously. Short answer: yes. but there's definitely a happy medium. Clearly "mary had a little lamb" played perfectly would not beat something extremely demanding but just a little gray. Demonstration of technical ability is one aspect. Uniformity and quality of sound is another. Readability and execution. there are more. The line that performs these with the greatest skill is awarded a better score. If there are any adjudicators that can provide a more eloquent answer than my own I'd be obliged. Only the first few shows are based on the season prior's scores. The regionals determine performance order thereafter. once in awhile there will be an exception to this if a corps is performing in their home town. Under the lights may be cooler temps, more of a crowd, maybe a lil more performance adrenaline, but i would NEVER say the sun adversely affected my performance. talk about an excuse. and for the record i've played a lot of shows in the setting sunlight. Can you honestly not see a correlation between performance time and talent level?! I'm not talking about one time slot vs the next.. if you go on last, the 2nd to last corps is probably pretty close to that talent level. but in ordered shows, I'm pretty sure most people can agree that, say, performances ordered 12-15 would generally not be as talented as performances say 3-5. I don't buy your logic one bit.
  12. Slightly off topic... - any possibilty there was an overload of PR fans in bloomington..? only 5 hours from rockford and all. - how were the crowd responses to bd/pr in pasadena last year..? also about 5 hours from concord last year. Could that have tipped the scales just enough or were the fans just looking for the upset?
  13. Where did you get this information? I'd like to see the rest of the captions' sub sub sub sub captions like this... Although I have a hard time believing these are all factored into a score - still nice info though.
  14. I think the first one is a no brainer..? Different implements of course open the door to volume for one (tenor mallets vs. sticks...), but I might say more importantly different timres and dynamic ranges (snare dreadlocks vs hot rods vs finger thimbles ($1 scott johnson) ). But if you're talking JUST about sticks - I guess its sort of a preference thing. Some lines just have a good enough quality of sound to appear louder, even if they're using "weaker" sticks. I could be using Delucia sticks (heaviest I can think of.. ? anyone?), but if I'm not hitting the #### center of the head it won't matter will it? In terms of control, I'd say sticks these days are pretty optimal. Industry will always be looking for the "next great thing" or next innovation, but weight distribution, length, beefiness are all generally similar per dynamic sound. obviously you wouldnt break out some timbale sticks for an impact or something. this topics kindve a toss up for me. I have my prefs, I think everyone does..? (no IP implements for me!!) , and thats about as far as I can take this one.
  15. so, mad scotty, are you upset that you can't find a satisfying description of judging criteria? or that you believe dci judging works by an unwritten law? I can't tell if your replies, which are clearly articulate and well learned, are a rant, working towards a yet unfound solvent, or just an attempt to expose an alleged loophole in judging.
  16. IMO, not much beats warming up in the lush allentown JBC stadium setting. right on the waterfront area, gorgeous. one of my favs.
  17. My picks: hard for me to choose between: Cavies 95 Cavies 00 phantom 03 SCV 04 cadets 05 (f off.. i liked it.. before they went COMPLETELY ape$h*t w/ narration) I'd say those are my top 5. I had this discussion w/ a friend... you don't see cavies 06, or bd, or whatever b/c for me at least, my favorite shows can stick in my head for days. If theres no memorable quality to the music then I don't think it did its job. Thats not to say that there arent plenty of other amazing shows, but those are some of my tops. edit: phantom 08 goes right up there as a total package. they pulled the crowd so amazingly, and had more GE than dang near any show ive watched to this day, but musically they have a lot of competition from yesteryear.
  18. Isn't tuning on the musicianship scorecard..? (!!) Sometimes I think there should be more attention paid to this, (alluding to how techs crank down the heads in just a few minutes in the lot...). Equipment is one thing, not taking the proper time to do a good job is another. A small portion on the scorecard, but big on the ears.
  19. Precisely why chose to pursue DCI. If there was not the emphasis on the performance/skill curve, I wouldn't have bothered. I gave college marching band a shot after I got back from tour, but my entire mindset and approach to playing had changed. I demanded better of myself and the peers a played with. When it was apparent that (my school at least) did not put at least a somewhat similar emphasis on performance, well that is when they lost another dci'er from the band - didn't bother me one bit. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or bad thing, but positive it was the right thing. sw
  20. I just laughed out loud for a good minute at work. I'm getting glares... thanks for that
