  1. Just got home. Am not getting a normal good picture. Is it me or Flo?
  2. I don't think Academy was in Finals last year. Two years ago they were.
  3. Congrats and welcome to Saturday! So awesome so see this happen.
  4. Saddest day of the year. Glad I'll make it home tonight in time to watch. Hopefully. FCO! I don't think there will be any movement in places. Judges pretty much have it set and separated by a point in most cases. MAYBE Bluecoats will upset BD but I'd put my money on BD. I think SCV has it wrapped up. Hoping BAC wins guard and holds on to 5th. Hoping Blue Stars somehow have a miracle and get 7th, but cheers to The Cadets on a successful season despite. Congrats on Mandarins for finally doing it! Here's to another year of drum corps!
  5. And I would know, because I own one. Forgot to mention that. Forgot I had one until now.
  6. I'd imagine the pickiness would have more to do with the better corps being judged harsher. When you get up into that tier, you're expected to have worked on the little things, and those little things are what separates 94 points and 97 points.
  7. I don't think they have the same judges as the day before. Who could take that much abuse? If that is what you meant. 40 groups is just too much, though, for one day. I'd imagine he/she would have a headache.
  8. I was always under the assumption that the scoring starts as soon as the DM turned back around from giving their salute, and ends when they turn around to bow when finished. Is there an official rule on this? And rule on how short a show can be? I also thought that a show can only be like 11:30 and no longer, else there's a penalty.
  9. Quoting my own post here. SCV won prelims tonight winning every caption except guard, and they end up.with 96.8 12th was 86.x which is generous for a 12th place corps. The corps that get 99+ points are getting perfect 20s on their sheets. I guess that doesn't have much to.do with spread. I guess a perfect 20 is a perfect 20 and a judge will know if they deserve that. SCV had zero 20s. Not even a 10. Couple of 9.9s. I think by Saturday we'll see them with a couple of 10s. I still think the show is worth 97.x
  10. They get my vote for the cheesiest ending of the season. And that really sucks for it to be that particular corps. This isn't a Scouts show.
  11. Captions have been going to upwards of 5 different corps. That pulls scores down quite a bit to a lower denominator. I don't see how it's possible SCV gets a 99. Like I said before, I can't see how they can even get more than 98. Unless the Finals night judges start with a higher base score. But they've almost never done that. I still stand by a winning score of 98 or just below it. Let's say 97.90. Not that it matters much. SCV winning another title will be cool to see. IF it happens. No records need be broken to enjoy it.
  12. Had no idea about that. That's neat. I always just assumed that they were THE DIVIL
  13. I doubt they will hit 99. Very much doubt. I'd say comparatively a 98.00 at the most. They should beat BD by half a point and their show is worth about 97.25, so maybe SCV will hit 97.75-98. They do a lot.of things well, but in order to get that 99, you need to win the large majority of sub captions and 2nd in the ones you don't win. They're not running away with GE or anything for that matter.
  14. I always liked corps names that creatively have to do with their location or sponsors. Bluecoats I think are sponsored in part or named by some law enforcement association, someone correct me if I'm mistaken. Cascades are an obvious like for me. Perfect name for a corps out in WA. Southwind Magic of Orlando Glassmen (Toledo is known as the glass city) Mandarins is a good name for a corps with Asian heritage and history Pacific Crest is a great name. Music City for obvious reasons, being Nashville is known as the Music City. Carolina Crown is also a great name, given that they're in Carolina, and the Carolinas were named for "North Carolina was named after King Charles I and King Charles II of England. The name "Carolina" comes from the Latin word "Carolinus," meaning "of Charles." so king, crown, carolinas, Carolina Crown is a great fit. I also believe the Kiwanis Kavaliers were sponsored by the Kiwanis club up there in Canadia.
  15. It's genetically true that males on average are physically stronger and can work harder and longer. It is also genetically true that males on average are more logical in their thought as opposed to emotional compared to females. This is scientifically proven and does not espouse an opinion for other against any particular philosophy. This guy said what he said because he assumed what I mentioned above to be an obvious fact that is inherent to our species. Some people will get upset because they take this to mean that females are inferior, when the facts say no such thing. It is assumed, and the fact they assume something says more about them than the one they point fingers at. So logically, I have to assume that either Flo Marching believes that women are inferior, or are catering to those who believe so in fear of losing money, or that the people who are upset over this do not think logically, and the latter is what I assume to be the case, and that comes from our education system not teaching philosophy and logic, how to form an opinion or argument using reason.
  16. I have been a drum corps fan since 1999 and have never seen that VK 92 clip. I don't know how I can call myself a long time fan and not know about that. What a gem that is! And the BD in 2008 thought they were constantly risking absurdity? No, no they weren't. I wish there was this kind of comedic entertainment in DCI today, but everything is so sterile now.
  17. I never have any idea what it's talking about.
  18. I thought the show was about the madness that a genius must endure as part of the nature of being a genius. And the carpets are the neuron connections the brain makes as part of the creative process, and the cages signify the mental imprisonment of being mad.
  19. It's incredibly more competitive today than it was 25+ years ago. The corps that have survived have survived for a reason. Survival of the fittest has played out very strongly in DCI over the years. Not only is it hard to survive money wise, it's hard to find and keep great instructors, talented members, volunteers, and touring is also much more involved. Charter bus companies charge a ton. Hundreds of thousands. Most of the corps that we have today have been around a long time and have developed a system that provides stability and continuity. They are strong and competitive. To jump a bunch of places nowadays is incrementally more difficult because of this. Boston's jump last year from barely 12th to 6th is astonishing. In order to do that, a lot of great things need to somehow happen all at once. Personally I think the biggest factor is staff. Great, experienced drum corps show writers and instructors are in short supply. Retaining talented vets are the other big factor. Convincing them to stay and buy into the program rather than chase a medal. I am betting that in addition to aquiring great staff, BAC was able to ride momentum with a good show in 2016 when they came from behind and nabbed that last finals spot. I think the corps took a lot of pride in that and was able to use that moment to convince a lot of vets to stick around and ride the wave. It was easier to do this 30+ years ago. Not so anymore. It's just way too competitive now. Blue Stars are also somewhat of a great example. Great corps in the early 70s, faded out of relevancy for a while as far as division 1, came back strong in lower divisions, couple decades later made its way back to world class and went right into 14th, then 14th, then finals in which this year would have been, 2012 13th place removed, 11 years in a row. Money, staff, and retainment.
  20. It might not happen next year either...lol...but I have a feeling it will happen within the next 10 years. I think that's a reasonable time frame.
  21. I like Spirit. I don't mind Madison's show. Except the ending. 13-16 is a little bit stronger than usual. Glad to see that. But if Scouts' design staff wants to elicit an emotional response, that's not the way to do it for that particular corps. Just sayin'. We all know what we want out of them. Melt my face off!
  22. I think the Blue Stars could technically beat Cadets IF they max out their show. I think Stars have an overall better design by just a tad. They would really have to push hard and Cadets would need to have an off night. Stranger things have happened. I think it's unlikely but it is possible. There's no way at this point that BD will get less than 2nd. Crown may even surprise us and nab the bronze. I think that is also unlikely but possible. I'll go ahead and make my score predictions here and come back to it to see how I did. 12th Crossmen 86.75 11th Phantom 87.60 10th Mandarins 88.875 9th Blue Knights 90.1 8th Blue Stars 90.625 7th Cadets 91.725 6th Cavaliers 93.5 5th BAC 94.325 4th Crown 95.4 3rd Bloo 96.15 2nd BD 97.575 1st SCV 98.25
