Final placement decided already...

I think Atlanta will be what we see in finals. 5-6 could switch but I'll put my money on BAC. -
What makes a good Blue Devils show?
BoyWonder1911 replied to ThePlanets's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
White wooden poles, pink, black and/or white stripes in colorguard, brass playing unison in ocatves, funny side-to-side head movement, and jazz. That's a Blue Devil's show. -

No. I'm saying that if they do out execute, then yeah of course. But they're nowhere near SCV in execution right now. And yet they're still that close. I'm not a big fan of either show. In fact out of the top 7 currently, I only like BAC. Maybe Cadets a little bit. I really don't care who wins but it seems that SCV should have a larger lead. -

I wasn't suggesting that if someone suffers worse, then your suffering means less. I was merely trying to put things in perspective. "I might not support DCI if this continues to happen." Ok well you know what, crap like this goes on in countless ways in everything. If we had that mentality in everything, nothing would be supported. And the suffering going on in DCI is miniscule compared to some other things. This was all I was referring to. The problems will be dealt with. I guarantee it -

Let them? Who is going to not let them tour? That's just beyond stupid. Force a corps to remove a director? Ok, I can see that happening in unofficial ways. I guess the directors of other corps could go to Pio's board and threaten to remove them from touring unless they fire their director. But then you open a can of worms over lost competition revenue, and members all of a sudden having nowhere to march, etc. It can get messy in court. What happens in one corps is no other corps' business. Not saying that that is right, I'm saying that's how it's always been, and for a reason. The corps have control over DCI. They themselves run it. The alternative is to not run it. That's more dangerous IMO. This stuff will work itself out. There's abuse all.over this world. The kind of abuse we're reading about here in Pio is first world abuse. Many kids around the world would kill for a spot in Pio, even if they knew how it is right now. Sorry but that's the truth. There are kids that get a foot chopped off if they steal something from the diamond mine they are forced to.work at so.you can show off your excess. -

By the end of the season, the judges "usually" get it right. But I swear to God, if BD wins again this year, I'll be mad. And I'll probably be much less inclined to watch any DCI next season. Especially paying for the crappy Flomarching. BD win because they out execute everyone else. This year they're being out executed in many captions. And with the way SCV is performing their musical program, they should be at least 1 point ahead of anyone. Too close for comfort. -

Holy moly...BD and BAC really increased their point spreads. More than I.would have thought practical even with smaller number of competitors and different? judging panel. Are these ToC shows still judged differently? BAC guard back to ranking near what they should be. BAC beating Crown in total visual. And right there with them in feet. Beating Cavs in all captions, even GE. That's huge. What a well written program. I did not expect this to happen this season. They are even holding their own in music. Their brass and percussion still have a lot of room to grow according to the sheets. It looks like they just may stay on top of the Cavs here on out. As far as BD with that huge a gap over the Coats, doesn't surprise me but it kinda does. BD show seems weaker than usual. This corps just will not accept anything less than 2nd. 2006 last time they got 3rd. And 2005 last time they did not medal. When will this streak end??? -

Maybe public flogging is the way to go. It seems to work. Sometimes it would be deserved and sometimes not. But every corps should be worried about their public relations. This stuff going on at Pioneer sounds like it should be public flogging. When you have a director who is purposefully being a you know what and unashamed of it. Public flogging worked with a certain corps in the Northeast when it was deserved. -

All that would do is stir up more speculation on here. And then you get more rumors and more controversy. They didn't do enough. They did too much. X will happen. No, Y will happen. Honestly I'd rather the problems be fixed in the back room without everyone knowing about it. I imagine the next DCI board meeting will be quite the scene. I'd like to be a fly on the wall when it happens. When problems come to the forefront like they have, DCI is usually good about dealing with it. It's a pretty progressive activity. And no I don't necessarily mean that in the political sense. -

DCI is pretty much nothing but the directors of the corps bringing stuff up and voting on it. The corps themselves are the legislative board of DCI. If something is not in the rules already, there is no enforcement. And the only enforcement seems to be Dan Acheson having a conversation with someone to try and fix an issue. There is no independent governing panel that hands out punishments that I'm aware of. -

I was under the impression that with the new tax code, itemized deductions for individual returns are no longer. Whether or not you can still "gift" money up to a certain amount and have it be tax deductible, I don't know. When I donated to my family corps a couple weeks ago,.I did so through my corporation knowing I could tax deduct it through that rather than through my personal paycheck. -

Yes I am. I'm sorry for assuming. But if it weren't the final ending, why would they add that it now? Seems like that would be extra time and extra work.for nothing, when they could just use the original ending as a placeholder. Doesn't make sense. -
Torchia seems to reward difficulty more than others. If you have a difficult book, you'll be rewarded more than easier books, with less achievement needed to overcome. "You need to achieve your book in order to get credit for difficulty" is somewhat less relevant with her. Not completely, but somewhat less.

I don't think they can catch Cadets. 1.5 points is a lot to be behind at this point. The new ending just isn't helping. If you're gonna have a new ending, it's got to be one of those helter-skelter crazy Cadets style closers and it's got to end on some kind of set that has to do with the theme. Or a star. Marching in front of the pit is a "roll your eyes" moment for me. It says "we're not loud enough so we need to get closer to the audience." The staff obviously isn't gunning for 7th because they know this ending isn't gonna do it. Neither is cleaning the show. And see is what really grinds my gears. The kids have been rising to the challenge all season. They got a somewhat difficult show, and are doing it well. 8th place and 7th is not completely unattainable. And then they give the kids a safe ending. It's like saying "Good job! Now stay in 8th!" If I were marching, and this is just me, I'd be a little offended. I'd want some more meat to chew on. I would much rather risk dropping to 9th in order for a chance to get to 7th, than resting on my laurels. The kids have been rising to the challenge all year, why not keep at it?? They seem to be clean enough at this point to add a small handful of difficult sets to accomplish for a potentially huge reward. But then again that is just my philosophy on things. And it isn't just about jumping another spot. It's about next season as well. You want to put it into the members heads that we're trying to move up. You want vets to stay. Therefore you need to give them a reason to stay. The ones thinking about trying out for a better corps are not going to be further convinced to stay by telling them they're not capable of achieving more this season. No offense intended to anyone. I just want to see some risk taking. That's all. Great show and being done well. I just yearn to see slightly more. -

So all this stuff about pioneer, some kids were being yelled at? I've seen kids yelled at at just about every single WC corps. When it comes to crunch time, and your show isn't getting cleaner, the kids need a big kick in the rear to get them going. Is this what we're talking about? I can't figure out the nature of the problems with Pioneer except for a director who likes to micromanage and yell at members. If punishment came to anyone who yelled at members, every corps would fold. Many instructors work for free or for cheap. Most corps, you take who you can get, or you just don't have a caption head that season. There aren't talented qualified instructors beating down the doors of these groups trying to get a position. As far as I know. I assume technically qualified help is hard to come by. Edit: I found a lot of the stuff about Pio recently on the Reddit forums. I guess now I know. Wow. How can a director have so much control over a group? I didn't think any of the staff could be on the board of a non profit. -

If you look at it closely, the GE 1's are separated by the smallest margin possible. The GE 2's, which are judged differently than GE 1, we're the same score from both judges. -

I thought Boston's guard was like #1? I guess DCI and the judges decided "oh well we can't have THAT happen, CAN we!" These scores are all over the place. 2 different judges same caption and there is no consistency between them. Obviously they don't understand how to use the sheets. I understand there is subjectivity, but come on. This is rediculous. Maybe we truly need complete random order. Make them actually work. Score off the sheets, not off nearby competition. When a judge finishes judging one corps, they should completely forget about what they saw or heard, and the scores they gave, before judging the next corps. They're just being lazy. -
