  1. It takes a superb administration team that can recruit, solicit donations, and generally not screw up any tiny detail just to put out even a DCA or an Open Class corps. Location isn't the issue, use the Troopers as an example of that. In the meantime, Cadets and Bluecoats aren't too far away. I also know lots of New Yorkers that have gone to Jersey Surf. New York would be a great place to have a drum corps, but geographically it is not high on the priority list because there's so much already hugging its borders.
  2. Please stop doing this in every single prediction thread. It's old. Very old.
  3. Thank you for including Surf 2012 in this! A lot of people would probably say it doesn't deserve to be in this bracket, but that 20th place corps entertained me more than most of the G7 that year.
  4. In my Open Class experience, they encouraged us to move on to World Class at some point. Most OC corps know where they stand and, at least until they try to move up to World Class, they won't blame you one bit for moving on.
  5. Keep in mind that this is Texas, the place where most top World Class corps hold satellite camps to bring up their talent levels. If multiple DCI and DCA corps can function in the New York/Philly areas with few membership problems (the entire state of New Jersey takes only three hours to cross north to south), then three DCI corps at extremely different levels of competitiveness can function together in the Texas Triangle.
  6. You mean Open Class, right? Or are they in DCA?
  7. A Spanish speaker mentioned to me recently in a discussion about DCA that the way I pronounced Caballeros is wrong. The L's are supposed to have more of a Y sound, like in tortilla. This made me wonder how the current common pronunciation in the drum corps community for Caballero came about. Does anybody know how that started and became commonplace?
  8. From corpsreps.com: "The reason for forming the corps was to extend the great world of drum corps to younger players in Hawthorne, New Jersey, and surrounding communities, but a secondary benefit was to create a ready pool of talent that would eventually graduate into the senior Caballeros corps to replace ageing members." So yeah, it was a feeder corps. The Muchachos were started at a time when junior corps were seen as a the stepping stone to all-age corps, instead of what it is today. Of course the Muchachos turned out to be very competitive in DCI for the short time they were around, and if they existed today their relationship with the Caballeros would probably be similar to the Cadets' intended relationship with Cadets2 (just a guess).
  9. Good for him! It was obvious from the start that he would make it into DCI very soon! Although to be fair (and I might be wrong about what I'm going to say), the Academy as a whole looked VERY young this year. I walked by their truck at one of their shows and there had to be a good number of kids around this one's age loading it. Also, I personally know a 14 year old in the hornline. It's awesome that he's marching World Class at such a young age, but let's give props to the other young ones too.
  10. Probably The Killers. Not because I like their music in particular, but it would be easy to arrange for drum corps. The parts are bright and melodic, the tempo is upbeat and perfect for marching, and the choruses seem good for park & bark moments or company fronts.
  11. This will be great if the stadium is designed in such a way that a drum corps show there won't suck. I'm going to use Red Bull Arena in New Jersey as an example, since the idea of holding a show there was considered and then dismissed for this exact reason. The stadium is beautiful. Probably the best stadium I have ever seen, despite being in a rough neighborhood. But it's a soccer stadium built for 25,000, not a football stadium. When it was built, they decided to build it like many European soccer stadiums and make it so that everything sounds about 10 times louder inside. This is designed so that the fans' chanting and cheering really echoes throughout and every game becomes as rowdy as a European match regardless of the size of the crowd. That's perfect for soccer and other sports, but horrible for drum corps. Even for the smaller Open Class corps the echo would be a lot worse than at any dome and it would be unbearable to listen to. On the other hand, a drum corps show was recently held at PPL Park near Philly and it was beautiful. Granted the stadium is built to look like a small college stadium at best, but the top is wide open so there's no echo. Also, the stadium is built right under the Commodore Barry Bridge that goes across the Delaware River so that gave the show a beautiful background. TLDR: If this Orlando stadium is built like Red Bull Arena, it will be unusable. If it's built like PPL Park, the return of DCI Orlando seems likely. It's all up to the contractors Orlando City S.C. is using,
  12. It looks like they have some good names here. Terrell Smith and John Miliauskas can definitely be trusted to run a successful drum corps. Can't wait to see them in Rochester!
  13. Before I rant, let me start by saying I have nothing against the OSU band or any collegiate band for that matter. OSU, Michigan, and Penn State all have fantastic bands. I personally LOVE OSU's shows, especially the video game one. That being said, TBDBITL's fans have been getting on my nerves lately. Making a post just to say how good they are on a drum corps forum is just one example of the arrogance I've seen from them lately. In a more extreme example, there was a Carolina Crown video on the front page of Reddit recently (yes, the front page) that was more than half filled with people saying OSU is better. That's right: many OSU fans think their band is so #### good that they're even better than the DCI World Champion. Has anyone else noticed this? I think I'm going insane with how an OSU fan seems to spring up anywhere there's a band/corps discussion just to say they're the best.
  14. This is exactly what it sounds like. Are there any updates from the Glassmen about coming back yet? Last year when they went inactive they made it clear that they intended it to be temporary.
  15. *My grandma was a concert pianist as a kid (she still plays to help with arthritis). *My aunt was a French horn major. *My brother played trombone in high school and college, won the John Philip Sousa award, and is a continuing member of Tri-M. *My cousin marched trumpet in a competitively successful USSBA band. *My girlfriend marched at a BOA high school, did their WGI drumline, and then marched in a top college band under famous drum corps instructors. Her entire family is musical, but most notably her dad plays French horn in a renowned orchestra. With all that talent around me, I'm the only one that marched drum corps.
  16. How low were these fees? There are some Open Class corps that get away with charging their kids over $2,000 and nobody complains. I understand what they're trying to do and have a tremendous amount of respect for that, but I think from an actual member's point of view it would be worth a few hundred more dollars to keep their family around (and for many of Music City's members, march close to home).
  17. I'm happy for Les Stentors and Racine, but it's ridiculous that almost every single Open Class corps made finals! The meaning of that milestone is gone now. Either they need to limit the number of finalists to 8 or 10 or (preferably) do something to get more Open Class corps off the ground and in touring shape. It wasn't too long ago that Open Class needed three shows, and I know everyone wants it to be that way again.
  18. Sorry, I had it in my head and thought I put it here. I'll make an edit. Thanks for pointing that out!
  19. The Academy - What is that guy saying? Blue Devils - Somehow chaotic and clean works well together. Blue Knights - The closest thing to an animated Disney musical number in DCI this year. Blue Stars - I know nothing about voodoo, but I'm interested in knowing how accurate their portrayal is. Bluecoats - Finally, a patriotic show that focuses on real American culture and not our anthem! Boston Crusaders - I get the uniform change: they're rising from the gray ashes! The Cadets - Am I really watching the Cadets? Carolina Crown - If the show is about science, why is there a love scene? Cascades - They're in a box again. The Cavaliers - I actually like the black cloaks on the field better than their real uniforms, and that's saying something for the Cavies. Colts - Every year recently I start out convinced the Colts can't do a more Colts-like show, yet they always do. Crossmen - I really like this new theme they have been committing to since last year. Jersey Surf - They funked me so hard I could barely sit down! Madison Scouts - As the sibling of a recent military recruit, this show literally brought me to tears and it's my favorite of the season. Mandarins - Huge improvement from last year and it's not just because of the uniforms! Oregon Crusaders - Their WGI uniforms have less to do with the show theme than their regular green ones. Pacific Crest - I don't get their shows, but I do get why nobody else seems to mind. Phantom Regiment - Those trumpets carrying the props while playing add a cool element to the already cool show. Pioneer - They're finally on their way to moving out of last place! Santa Clara Vanguard - Um..... Wow!?! Spirit of Atlanta - I like my SoA the way I like my liquor: scorching and jazzy! Troopers - Almost as 'Murican as the Bluecoats and Madison Scouts, but definitely in a different way.
  20. It seems like, at this rate, they'll end up at around the same place they were at last year. But considering the standard they set in 2012 for themselves and the vet retention, that's unacceptable. I really hope they pull it together for the next two regionals.
  21. I'm guessing there will be no Drumline Battle at this one? It would have been cool to see Surf vs SOA. Oh well.
  22. I doubt those were the scores, simply because they are almost exactly the same as last night's scores.
  23. I feel like Surf and Boston were both severely underscored. Both were amazing shows.
  24. Now that the first scores are rolling in, I think it's safe (and relieving) to say that a prediction thread on here would be even more inaccurate than ever before. It's been a long time coming, but DCI is finally anyone's game. These are the only things somewhat certain so far, but even these ideas are just guesses: -The top three will likely be BD, Crown, and Cadets. But the Bluecoats, Phantom, and SCV also have smaller chances of breaking in -Pioneer or Cascades will come in last (sorry) -BDB and SCVC will make semifinals and medal in Open Class, and probably the Spartans too Other than that, the final lineup could be anything at this point. Formerly great corps are becoming just good, and formerly average corps are moving up either in scores or entertainment value. I don't know about you, but for the first time in a while I'm really excited to see how this plays out!
