Got to see and hear them at Clovis and Stanford as well as the encores. Also listened to a warmup and the performance at the booster lunch. As an alum I realize I have a built in bias. However, I have been complaining to fellow alums and the staff that since the switch to the B flats that the Devils had lost "the sound." To quote George Castanza, they're back baby! I have not heard this sound since the '99 corps. The projection is back as well as the most beautiful all enveloping tone quality. I cannot describe how great they sound. The show from a creativity standpoint is off the charts. Once again they have come up with a blow away opener. The drums sound much better with the Pearls and are August clean already. Guard is killer as usual. Saw Cadets and Cavies on Monday after Stanford. BD, Cadets, SCV, and Cavies is how I would place them. The pit actually muddles the horns quite a bit. When they played at the picnic without pit you could hear a lot of intricate runs(clean, clean, clean) that were covered up at the encores. BD standstill= little slice of heaven!
