  1. Like your thinking, Garfield... just think if the Bridgemen had won... they went down completely flat.
  2. I enjoyed both of your corps that year... Gail made us watch you out West after stating that you would beat us that night... so we stared at you in wonderment from the end zone.
  3. I never thought of DCA as a viable alternative to World Class DCI until this thread... but understand that if you cannot afford (time or money) to have tour commitments like the DCI World Class AND no viable DCI Open Class is available then this does indeed make sense. (I almost marched tenors for Empire Statesmen in 1986 as I had no corps near me in Houston, TX; but, Mom vetoed this idea.) I note also that we are discussing Open Class and so issues regarding wanting to join the best of the best don't apply trying to contrast DCI Open with DCA. Really saddened that Music City will not be touring next year, they seems like they were on the right track program wise.
  4. Very good insights Randy, I wish the economic and work realities of drum corps were much simpler so as to allow more corps to continue entertaining us while providing the great summer experiences we've all had with them in the past. Hope you are doing better these days as well.
  5. Wow, you're good Boo!! BTW... you should participate in the Hall of Fame Silent Auction by offering a seat as a team member for Prelims or Semis, I know I'd bid on that!
  6. 27th Lancers Bridgemen Velvet Knights Suncoast Sound Sky Ryders Argonne Rebels Oakland Crusaders Freelancers Star of Indiana Squires (+1 to our newest DCI Hall of Fame Member Steve Rondinaro http://www.dci.org/about/fame/view_member.cfm?member_id=92929206-94c2-4059-b24e-9784b0b7b49f )
  7. I seem to recall that the The Royal Crusaders of Finleyville PA started out doing Christian themed shows that were quite popular and good. In fact I seem to recall them even carrying a large cross on the field as part of one of their early 1970s shows. http://www.corpsreps.com/corpsreps.cfm?view=corpsdet&corps=20&corpstype=Junior http://drumcorpswiki.com/Royal_Crusaders The 1989, 1990, and 1991 shows of the Cavaliers were inspired by Christian and more specifically Catholic music. http://www.corpsreps.com/corpsreps.cfm?view=corpsyr&corps=9&yearqry=1989&corpstype=Junior http://www.corpsreps.com/corpsreps.cfm?view=corpsyr&corps=9&yearqry=1990&corpstype=Junior http://www.corpsreps.com/corpsreps.cfm?view=corpsyr&corps=9&yearqry=1991&corpstype=Junior I personally, enjoy the J. Rutter music and have the Cavaliers to thank for exposure to it. Peace All! :innocent:/> Sorry, I forgot some favorite closers from Spirit of Atlanta ... 1979/1980 Let It Be Me and 1981 We Are the Reason
  8. well yeah... gosh this theme stuff is just getting weirder and weirder. Soon enough we'll have themes like "Black, the Absorption of Light"
  9. Wow, really? So all other corps should just give it up as lost because none of them are doing it right? I know you probably did not mean that; but, perhaps a lighter tone of supporting information would be more appropriate, eh? Look... you like BD and that is great. I agree that they have had quite an impressive and successful placement history. Is that all that matters or are we to conclude (getting back on topic) that staff is that important to being competitively successful.
  10. Ahem.. Boo.. surprised that you were not aware of the history of our SCV annual member patches. Don't know if this is still done today; but, from 1972 to at least my age-out in 1989 the patches were the SCV green crest and in the top right diagonal area it reads "DCI NAT'L". Many members did not add the official DCI patches opting for these instead. Watches were never officially provided by the corps... just the DCI rings.
  11. Good point but how would one do Phantom of the Opera with other non-POTO music? Creative ways perhaps but I'd rather not have that explored. On another note... Northern Thunder (Brian T) posted this past years SCV hornline at the Texas Bandmasters performing the Ballad from our SCV 1989 POTO - "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again". Exact same arrangement. I'd encourage all to find it, give it a listen, and continue with thoughts and responses to the OP question.
  12. Hmmm... but... PR did not play all Spartacus music as they had in 1981 and 1982.
  13. ditto Also some well qualified percussionist are not geographically located near a corps and are unable to attend regular rehearsals. When I marched, I lived in Houston, TX and at that time the closest corps were Spirit of Atlanta, Suncoast Sound, and Sky Ryders. Many corps drum lines at that time were having weekly practices and as such wanted local talent where possible.
  14. Ahem... touche... Ahem. You are the best... thanks for lightening this up a bit. I'll just say that I just really enjoy drum corps. Now and past it matter not to me. I have always looked with wonderment at how the shows are created and evolve into wonderfully entertaining musical extravaganzas. I don't have to enjoy every corps every year but I always find some enjoyment in just about every show I view. Reminds me of one of my best corps friends. He was the assistant drum major in VKs 1984 show... yes, he played the shark. In Atlanta during championships week, he took a couple of buses and the MARTA to sneak up to the stadium to enjoy the very first several corps to perform (seem to recall him being enamored with Canadian Knights). Point is that I wish all of us could still have his sense of joy with the activity.
  15. I had the honor of meeting several of the Teal Sound members at the Prelims movie and wished them best of luck in the future. Nobody I spoke with had any further information about this effort.
  16. See main article at http://www.dci.org/news/view.cfm?news_id=d41e9c22-ad7e-47ec-b0c4-bcb05b6ab75b I hope everything is ok! I find it odd that they only had another two days to get through World Class Prelims and determine it is better to return home. Any more details as to what impacted the corps?
  17. Teal was chosen as it was the color of the cities professional football team (Jaguars). IMHO I have always favored alliteration use as in "Jacksonville Jazz" for a drum corps name (like Suncoast Sound).
  18. Hmmm... you mean the one YOU wrote for the corps? Jade if I'm not mistaken. Sometimes we really have to temper your enthusiasm, Boo!
  19. Well.... some of the former "famous" sex-cymbals of VK marched SCV cymbals in 1991. That same year an SCV cymbal player from Canada tried out for and won the drum major position (I believe he and his friend who remained in the SCV cymbal line that year marched quite a few Canadian corps prior to 1991). Officially, the first female to make the SCV cymbal line was in 1989 - she was from Suncoast Sound but did not continue past late April or early May. All that said I recall our 1989 first tryout camp having around 20 cymbal players (perhaps a few more). As others have stated... attitude is very important as is musical background and physical conditioning.
  20. Agree with you on this logic Stu... I officiated hockey for many years and the same nonsense occurred. It is a devastating impact on the corps members who were not involved; but, needs to be in place as a serious deterrent. Just a thought... since the latest DQ occurred in the 1980s, would it not appear that the DQ deterrent has accomplished it's objective?
  21. Stu... the parties involved were British and they way the corps was notified was the result of a British or American customs agency. Yes, they were sent back to the UK and I imagine were sent to court. I agree that if we (SCV 1989) tried in any way shape or form to cover up the incident rather than provide immediate disclosure of the situation then things might have been handled by DCI a different way.
  22. I think that a better Boston question would be would they be where they are now if Suncoast Sound and/or Magic of Orlando were still around.
