I think this just refers to Memphis Blues adopting the Cadets name and somebody's hope to buy Cadets' unis.  The Cadets board recently voted to not sell those unis in bulk to anyone, and they posted on social media wishing Memphis good luck.

It doesn't seem as though there is any "organization" left to move anywhere. They even sold off their trucks and returned all their leased and borrowed equipment.

That's what I thought (based on the conversations in this thread), so I was surprised to hear that.

    Thanks for humoring me, everyone.

  2. As an EDM fan, I freakin' LOVE Meute.  🙂  The chops on these guys are frickin' ri-DONK-u-lous!

As for the "stoned" comment, I get it... if you're not prepared to "trance" out during trance music, it's very empty and repetitive.  The point is to get lost in it... drugs are just a (unnecessary) shortcut to get there.

  3. Thanks for this.  Brought back some memories of the camps from that year with the staff talking to us about it.  They were acutely aware of the Star comparisons and wanted to make it unique enough to stand alone and so decided to make it an original composition "inspired by" Medea rather than using Medea itself.

Same with Liquid.  I remember they said that they didn't want a straight arrangement of Equus because it's... about... horses... (lol) and didn't want to confuse anyone, so they asked Mr. Bocook to write an original "inspired by" Equus.

    Okay!

Obviously "wait and see" (no corps experience... I wonder what his interest in the activity is, enough to apply for the job?), but that resume does seem pretty solid.  I LOVE the marketing and "obscure Olympic sport" experience.

    AND the financial red-to-black angle!

There is a Pacific Division within DCI and they meet at the Januals to discuss issues affecting the West Coast corps.   If an open class corps runs their own show once they meet the show contract minimum requested by DCI  they keep all of the money.  For the last several years if  you want to run an open class show DCI has been offering favorable contract.  The idea the Open Class never get money is false.

Well that's cool! Thanks for the info!

  6. Just an anecdote from Flo:

My mother in law was just like "wow!"  She was flabbergasted by BD and didn't really have a response.  She had to process it all, so that may explain the reaction.

The other adults in the room were just like, that was amazing, but I don't get it.  My wife explained the French artist and the cut-outs and then they said, "oooohhh! Well that was amazing. "

So, all of this going on in the stands may be the reason why there was such a delayed response. BD shows are spectacles of art. 2005 Cadets got the same kind of applause all throughout the early season.  I get the frustration with the lack of standing Os, but sometimes those quiet reactions are earned in a good way!

  7. Personal favorites time!!

    Most enjoyable show overall: Troopers

    Most enjoyable drill: Colts

    Most enjoyable music: Phantom

    Best moment: Cadets opener hit

Best song choice:  Bluecoats - Bump!

Most intriguing color guard choreography: Blue Devils...dang!

Most satisfying ending: BAC (... but only at Finals... y'all messed with me this season...! Lol)

Daughters' obsession: the "princess" in Crown! The only corps for whom they sat completely still!

Wife's obsession: "... thou shalt not! Writ over the door..."  😆 we will be reciting that poem in our house for decades to come.

Tastiest percussion: Cavaliers feature... especially the front ensemble split cymbal sixteenths! AAAAAAA!! So good!

Most satisfying improvement: Cadets!  Spacing issues and endurance issues in closer seemed to disappear (for the most part) at Finals. What a great run!

I'll add more as they come to me! 🙂

According to my son, last night was only the third time running the full closer as an ensemble, ... Hopefully, they will have a productive rehearsal day on Monday w/o any weather impacts in Annapolis.

    Dang! That's impressive!

I'm going to be there live at Annapolis, and I'm bringing 44 kids/parents!  Can't wait to see your son perform, @postertrout!

I love this sorta drill, but I don’t think it’s crazy to see why it’s sorta fallen out of favor in the past decade for drill designers and design staffs, especially when being officially added about two weeks from Finals. Just so little room for error, error which can have detrimental impacts for the whole show. What’s the vibe on it over here?

I think the vibe here is, "bring it on, Cadets!"

To elaborate, I took this Cadets philosophy (at least from what I gleaned) with me as a teacher.  I always hand my students a product that's attainable, but barely.  I'm up front about it, too; the kids know going in that we'll have to work their tails off.  My kids are rarely "competitive" but those final runs at the end of the season where everything finally comes together... it's a special feeling.  So yeah... let's go for it and make something truly great.  If you're the best out there that year, you'll win... if not, you won't.  🙂

That could have been said about 1985, no?  The demand of the show was so much higher than anyone else, it raised the bar for adjudication.  And we still talk about that show today. Cadets were not the cleanest in 85, but it was INSANELY difficult. While, true it may have fallen out of favor, up tempo endings, for a variety of reasons, how do the CADETS identify themselves, in such a narrowing idiom that has been simply robbing from each other?  The activity is a bit vanilla in many ways.  With now the talk is, how DCI is defined by WGI, when it used to be vis a vis.

    Boom.  Exactly!

I watched the Middle Tennessee and the Atlanta shows on Flo.  Couple thoughts:

    • WOW! What an improvement in 24 hours.
    • Spacing issues and form integrity really hurt visual tonight (multi-cam... didn't see high-cam), but the group performance seemed much more comfortable and confident tonight.  Fantastic run.
    • My wife, sitting next to me, said, "I think that opening is my favorite moment of the year."    Yeah, honey... me too.
    • Transitions between movements don't seem as long/forced as they did at the beginning.  Not sure if it's improved staging or some cuts, but the flow seems much better now.
    • The multi-cam really helped cement the Atlas concept with the guard choreography, horn acting, and the "rising above/lifting up" motif with the curved poles and the new ending "climbing" thing.  I'm almost completely sold on this show, ya'll.
    • Good to see some of the holes from the other night are now filled back in... hoping the kids are staying healthy and happy!

What's the vibe from the members? How are they feeling right now? From where I'm sitting, it's starting to feel like something special is brewing...

That's enough.  To bed!  To bed, I said.

  10. Did anyone else notice the very uncharacteristic tear in the techno-ish drum feature (coming out of that beautiful ballad)? Half the horns were with the battery, half were with the FE? It was resolved within 48 counts or so, but it was the most glaring performance issue of the night from what I saw (I didn't catch everyone).  This moment alone could account for the score, imo, and it was probably a fluke.

I was watching on Flo, High Cam.

    That being said,

    1. I freakin' LOOOOOOOOOOOVE the changes made in the closer,
    2. I'm expecting an upgrade to the last set (???).  Even my wife is (she said, "what an odd form to end the show")!
    3. The very first brass entrance of the show is still my favorite DC moment of the year so far.  They're all pumping oxygen from their exertions, the crescendo is masterfully done in the arrangement leading into it, and the form is just massive.
    4. Second favorite part of the show is the HUGE full guard color-hit in the ballad.  Gets me every time.  And the ripple leading up to it is just... perfect.  AAA!

The 4th movement.  Almost all new drill, choreo guard book sequence and the introduction of a certain character.

RRRRR!!! I wanna seeee!! I'm having lots of trouble finding illegal videos online of this show.  I have the FanNetw--- I mean FloMarching but I'm busy writing drill in the evenings and missed several shows.  UGH!

Wifey and I are going to Allentown both nights, now, though... I'm so freakin' excited!!! lol
