  1. Solve future problems in the future...DCA is in Rochester next year and there are 4,032 front side seats for Finals. When Rochester drum corps people can be heard to say, "I wasnt sure where DCA was this year", that is an important piece of feedback. The marching community is big enough and enthusiastic enough that an invitation or a little more information might be all that's required for some to buy a ticket. What the would-be fans expect and what is delivered might be two different things. Given the number of raised eyebrows and other positive, post-DCA comments, my guess is that the percieved value was lower than what was delivered. Maybe even much lower.
  2. Rochester is the 2016 venue. That is the nearest and most available opportunity. Indianapolis had 25000 fans...serious, casual, bando, parent, alumni....a big mix there, obviously. Can DCA draw 4000 for their event? DCI has a chanel to the Bb, high school / collegiate musician and aspiring musician crowd. The tickets are about double the price, as is the perceived value...it is considered a major league event and commands a major league following. DCA, given the performances by the FInalists, is reasonably considered a major league event, especially at the given ticket price. Let's keep the focus on 2016 for the purpose of this conversation. jc
  3. DCA Championships 2015 was 35 corps in all classes 13 Open 7 Class A 7 Alumni 8 Mini Corps There were 2,300 marching member participants, a holiday weekend, a tradiitional venue, and a slate of finalists whose performance quality was certainly worthy of the price of admission. However, there seemed to be an understated invitation to this years' event and that was reflected in the turnout. Front side capacity is 4,032 and various reports had it a little over half full. That seems like a missed opportunity for both DCA and the serious and casual fans of drum corps that missed out on some good, live, Championship pageantry. Lets brainstorm a few fixes that can freshen up the offer and the offering. I'll start with expanding the social media presence and hype, starting with the recruiting of a college student in need of volunteer hours or internship hours or just a solid resume item to revamp the DCACorps.og website. It needs immediate improvement and the expertise undoubtedly exists in the dca-college student community. Next?
  4. 10 wins is a lot. Anyone there for all of them?
  5. We had inspections at ICA. Vince B used to let dignitaries join him in inspecting the corps before parades and special appearances (Crusaders and Statesmen). It was a traditional inspection line, parade rest, then full attention. You didn't want to have any IP's, trust me.
  6. and stop ripping on the feed and calling dca cheap and so forth. its lame. if you knew these people personally (or worked with them directly) you'd know this isnt a half ### attempt. The stadium feed is down. #### happens. If you are over 18, take it in stride and wait for a solution. You are disappointed, but you arent 12. I'm disappointed too. Now bak to this AWESOME live feed from GAMIN and REAMER that is a LIFESAVER substitute for the real thing. Thank u, DCP. Helps make the best of a bad situation.
  7. person I'd least like to be: the one staring back at Gil and Alan when they ask about the FN thing. Trust them. ladies and gents, to find the right solution all the way around.
  8. This is truly remarkable. The discussion can wait another day. This was Rocky vs. Apollo Creed II. After going against the Champ for so many years...this time, Rocky earned the decision.... ...pretty cool.
  9. More people attended the Crown and BD rehearsals (albeit for free) than attended the OC Championships combined. The Monday-Tuesday thing is a poor excuse at this point for a Championship contest. 3 years of low attendance in Michigan City is enough proof that there is little interest in the current FORMAT. There can be no argument that it is NOT a quality issue with SCVC, BDB, Spartans and Music City demonstrating top 25 material. Its a show worth watching. Solution: Since the OC's get their shot at the big stadium now as a matter of course on Thursday for Prelims (which is great), have the DCI Open Class World Championships on the prior Friday-Saturday at a location known to support drum corps and near enough to Indy for travel. Thought comes to mind that Lake Erie Fanfare or Drums Along the Waterfront (Buffalo) have enough of a following to be the host. Invite a few alumni corps (St Joe's for example) for exhibitions or, perhaps, have a WC presence as part of the show (perhaps a few in the 17-22 range to add an additional drawing card) and it becomes a strong Championship weekend. The medalists would roll into Indy with fresh competitive credentials and be able to savor their accomplishments for a few days before Prelims. Monday-Tuesday events in the host city could continue, but with a freshening of some sort. Perhaps they could emphasize the seminar/camp/clinic aspect with a mass corps finale; an opportunity to draw an interested crowd and sell a few tickets for Thursday and Friday. Lat thought: DCI has come in as a 20,000 person event. That actually makes sense. The movie theatre thing is super strong and delivery of the online finals gives those who dont have a 35 yard line to 35 yard line seat a good view. Lets face it, if you got the 20,001st ticket, its probably not as good a view (or sound) as watching the game from home. Yes, Montreal drew 42000, but half of those were lousy seats. So would be every additional seat in a "sold out" stadium. 3400 people got a front row seat with the broadcast and that is pure scale for DCI. Way to go. Its a 21st Century solution to expanding sales. Given that there isnt much of an opportunity to grow the live Saturday night crowd, that Friday has taken care of itself and Thursday is BigLoudLive ...the Monday-Tuesday/OC event is where some real ideas can make an impact.
  10. The same pictures appear in the brochure "Why Guys Play Snare" Last I checked, if you were over 18, you get to wear what you want. This is pretty tame compared to 27th Lancer "underwear rehearsals" and the ESPN body issue. Been sayin' for a while, you need to be in shape to be a band-o. Here's the proof. Go get 'em, 'Coats.
  11. Searching high and low for a copy of Empire 1992. Anyone help out with that?
  12. Take a year suspended....do the Loudest Show on Earth....do the West Coast weekends....either end the season early or do some state side shindig on Labor Day weekend that captures the Renegade flavor....flash mob somewhere cool and get it on YouTube....put together a Fiesta Bowl or Rose Bowl parade package...go kick some tail and keep that "image"....pay your debt to society....see you in 2014. Europe? To prove what? That you can go broke? That'll show 'em. Listen: Notorious is a reputation that can carry. In some ways, it works. In some ways, it doesnt. Renegades are the new Reilly Raiders. Raiders didnt lose their following by being notorious; that's why they had a following in the first place. Make it work for all and you can go down in history. Mess it up, and you just go down in flames. Get it right, 'gades. Think it through. Get it right. Rooting for you....punishment and all.
  13. This story just keeps getting better and better. Way 2 go Bob G and Team Bush. :)
  14. DCI just announced attendance at Big, Loud, Live at over 43,000 on 600 screens. Pretty awesome. If the success of drum corps at the movies is already proven as a concept...and if 70 tickets per theater at $18 per is a successful screening for drum corps...and if the technology for a live feed already exists...and if a drum corps partner in Fathom events already exists.... ...is it too big a stretch to believe that broadcasting DCA Finals at movie theaters in NY-NJ-PA and Upstate New York wouldnt fly? Yes, its a Sunday; Yes, its prime time at a movie house (holiday weekend) so the same parameters that exist for a Thursday in August wouldnt exist; Yes, its DCA; Yes, it would be a limited screening so the same scale that DCI gets at 600 theaters wouldnt be recognized at, say, 30 Yes, there are 100 criticisms and reasons why it might not be an overwhelming, line out the door response. But is it possible? Or even worth looking into? Or is the pay-per-view thing for DCA (a success so far) where the conversation kinda stops. Just a thought. How about your thoughts??
  15. I'll buy this. Is it an "issue" 35 years later? Not really. Its just a fun point of conversation. The High Drumline from 1977 has a trophy that says so.
  16. 27th and Avant Garde can be put in the "strong drumline" category. 27th got beat by 14 points at DCI East in '84 (6th) and won drums by 1.5. In Whitewater, they took high drums and placed 11th. That stuff is unheard of anymore. 1984 New York Lancers took top drums in open prelims while placing 13th. They were some bad mama jamma's. Red drums. Many notes. Good line.
  17. Not surprising that the music people are also math proficient. It's because most of us sat in the front of the room when there was some teaching going on. And they called us geeks.....ha! Make a donation!!
  18. Its about as common as hitting for the cycle or a Mets no-hitter. 1976, 1978, 1983, 2001 looks like we're due. But replying to the OP....not only could it happen....it has.
