I can't speak for brassmeaway, but I'm just saying other drum corps are featuring their leads, which appears to be what OleMissRebel wants. And if he deserves his own thread, where is Scott Dean's? He's the most recent featured screamer in DCI whom has his name known throughout the activity. Edit: I'm not trying to rag on Lyman. I have seen the Crossmen once this summer so far (liked the show) and hope to see them at Finals. But the original post does not come across as a "We need to praise this kid because he can play high" thread. It appears to be a plea to drum corps to feature their leads more.

Have you seen a Madison show the past few years?

BRASSO: This is why I'm not an elementary teacher, but it's a favor for the school. I honestly think if there is enough movement going on, they will be fine. They sit and watch the high school marching band rehearse before school in the fall and love it.

I have to sub for our 3rd grade elementary music teacher next week, and I thought I'd show the kids a drum corps show or two on one of the days to take a break from their program preparation. What does the DCP world think would be a good show to show them? I'm thinking possibly 06 Cavies for the visual aspect, or 08 Crown for the familiarity of the music. What do you guys think would be entertaining for a bunch of 9 year olds?

Of course I will, and have already started coming up with that part. I wasn't going to bore the DCP crowd with garbage they don't want/need to know or whatnot. Just using these lists as stats that will be mentioned in the paper, like "On average, this many groups uses at least one of Bernstein's pieces every year" or "WSS has been used this many times." I'm not dumb enough to just simply list corps, years, and pieces. I'd like to pass this class and graduate from college, right? And again, I want to thank everyone who's helped me out. You guys are great!

Ok, so I am bringing up Bernstein again. But! I have a legitimate reason for this thread. In one of my classes, we have to do a paper of a composer of our choosing. We can write about whatever we like. So instead of being mainstream (cause I don't like being mainstream*) I'm going to write it on Bernstein's influence on the drum and bugle corps activity, rather than do a study biography like everyone else. "I know so-and-so lived from this day to this day and he wrote these pieces that are obviously cool cause everyone knows this already." So I'd like some help from the lovely DCP community. Can you list any and every Bernstein piece you remember being used by any drum corps in any year? If you can, include the piece title, the corps who did it, and what year they did it. Please and thanks! *A few years ago in theory, our final was to write a piece of original music, 4 minute minimum length, using certain things we learned about. I decided to write a drum corps opener (and had to explain it wasn't marching bands cause I purposely left out the woodwinds) instead of a solo with accompaniment or small ensemble piece. I don't like mainstream.

Why risk them? Because winning games means momentum. Did you see how the players looked on the sideline? They looked defeated. You deprive them of two halves of football (assuming they'll do the same thing next week) and then a bye week, and the players aren't running full steam. Give them a break, they get out of sync, and become an easily beaten team. Don't forget how many of those games they won in the 4th quarter. It's not like they were blowing out all of their opponents. I expect them to look really shaky in their first playoff game after they've all lost steam. There's a sense of power knowing you have won every game of the season. When your car is running in the best shape of its life, do you go under the hood and change things? Besides, did anyone on the Patriots get hurt in the end of the season in 07? Nope. Now, back on topic. Kind of. OP: love the analogy. And I really loved the Boston/Cadets part at the end. Totally got it. Thank you. But let's all be honest here, people. The only thing that relates to both drum corps and football is the surface that it is played on. And people's undying love for their team that no one can convince them to think differently. I mean, there are still Bears fans who think they are the best franchise in the history of the world (talked to one last night after they were gloating over AP giving them the game.) Reminds me of the grizzled alumni who year-in and year-out have all the faith in the world that their corps will (finally) get (back) into finals/top 6/top 3/win.

If the guy is good at what he does, he shouldn't need to have years of experience to get respect from the members. Some people are natural leaders, and people will listen to them. Also, I think it would be terribly stupid for members of any corps to not listen to their leader because they're new to the organization. I don't see how that would help at all, and I can't imagine a whole lot of people would think they can be successful if the members don't listen to their leader. Would members of a drum corps turn their backs on a new corps director? How about a show designer? Caption head? So why is it different for a drum major?

How often do you see corps jump several spots Finals weekend? Not very often. Why? Slotting.

Every year I've marched so far. 07: left hip flexor (minor) and right calf problems all summer long 08: more aggravated left hip flexor (hurt to simply walk some days) and the calf flaring up now and then 09: left hip flexor flared up in everydays and last ALL summer, lower back spasms every day. Flexibility suffered incredibly. Every morning was hell 10: we'll see what happens but I can predict something to do with my hip flexor at least As far as I see it, if you can still march with it, then do it. Other people get a small injury and sit out. I've never sat out of a rehearsal. I winced and limped a lot, but I could still march and rehearse. With the recurring injuries, I knew it wasn't going to go away so why sit out when I know I can fight through the pain? Probably not the smartest decision, but I only get to do the activity once and surely don't want to regret missing a show or something. If I can march on it, then I'm marching on it.

ChopSaver was my choice during rehearsal. Applying it from a tube is way more convenient then DCT, mostly cause I'd put it on in the middle of rehearsal and wouldn't have to mess around with my glove, cause you don't get a lot of time between reps. Usually had to wipe my mouth with my arm so it wouldn't effect my playing, but at least in my head I thought I was protecting my face. As far as after shows, I used liquid vitamin E. I still think that is the best way to take care of your face when you're done playing for the day.

So this may be an ignorant question, but regarding the guard soloist in Crown's show who is in the hornline uni then gets it ripped off of her after the opener, I assume she's the one dancing in the preshow music, but did she march the opener with the hornline then? Seems pretty demanding for someone who normally doesn't march hornline drill. Kudos to her if she did. One simple answer is all I need, then I could care less what happens to this thread.
