  1. On tour, can't watch the webcasts. Thought they were new tonight
  2. George Wozniack came over from Coats before 2012, he's been with SCV since then
  3. There was a bunch of West Coast groups that have come and gone. Fever in its various iterations jester Mystikal City Sound Stockton Buccaneers Velvet Knights Esperanza Phoenix And there was Memphis Sound/Forte Capital Sound Targets HYPE Teal Sound Dutch Boy Vision Elite St. John'a Allegiance Elite Pride of the Lions Cadets of NY AND countless others. That list only goes back to 2005
  4. Both can be. Marching and playing is demanding, but what to do at the halts? Standing and playing isn't that overly demanding, especially when the next corps in line is doing body movement to enhance the music and theme.
  5. I remember when coherent, actual arguments were needed, not just dismissive slights of other posters. Maturity can be cool too. Academy has some awesome uniforms, very sleek, and the ability to change the accent colors to fit the show design is a great choice overall.
  6. He's also started writing for the Mandarins this year, and I believe he wrote the drill for Glassmen for their last few years. Pete does amazingly organic and beautiful drill, and always fits the music very well. His work in 2009 and 2010 for SCV was some of the most melodic drill I've ever seen on the field.
  7. Simultaneous demand cheesy and laughable? Okay then.
  8. Probably sometime around themed shows becoming a thing. So probably mid-80s.
  9. Are they bringing back the 3-D pyramid again? Nice
  10. It is early season, but mis-hemmed and mis-tailored uniforms are a great way to keep a corps or any other group from looking their best. Just looks cheap and amateurish if the uniforms don't fit right on the members.
  11. Shrinking corps numbers are not completely DCI's fault. That's on corps management not having the money to get down the road. And again, attendance and viewership has been increasing. So has actually been growing, especially with the introduction of Soundsport and Drumline Battle. There are four new corps this season. Go watch them. More drum corps is great.
  12. I did too, now he has a 50/50 shot to get it right
  13. Uh…. Hasn't DCI been posting really strong profits, and increased viewership/attendance in the last few years? If that's not running a business well, not sure really what to tell you.
  14. I remember a story of SCV getting in trouble for noise a few years back while rehearsing in Atherton, CA. (Super rich area of the Bay) The police there carry decibel meters instead of tazers kind of town. I believe they only went to that town once between of the issues.
  15. Yes, it was Mvt. 1 of Steve Reich's City Life (otherwise titled Check It Out). That portion, and the Bryant Concerto used in the closer were the musical highlights of the show for me. Visually, the opening and closing sequences were just masterpieces.
  16. Already have my book picked out for tour. Brian Moynahan's "Leningrad: Siege and Symphony." It's a book detailing both the three year siege of the city from the POV of the people trapped inside; juxtaposed with Shostakovich writing his symphony and its preparation/performance within the besieged city. It's a pretty thick book, should keep me going on the bus.
  17. The trumpets seem to be the only ones that Yamaha provides as pro models. All the rest of their marching brass comes in one model only. There are a few grades of trumpets though, the intermediate level stuff really isn't bad. On the Xeno front, the trombones SCV used were not Xeno-class, but the one right below it. Pretty nice horns, and much cheaper.
  18. Has anyone tested out the Adams brass stuff yet? Since they're known for their front ensemble stuff, would be interesting to see a corps go to them for their musical needs.
  19. If they're physically fit and conditioned enough, they can run around the field and have sound like they're standing still. Some can certainly accomplish it. And if members aren't in shape enough to not be out of breath by Finals, something went wrong with the conditioning program.
  20. The Yamaha euphoniums are the best ones out there. They're beautifully balanced, easy to move, and have an amazing sound. Closest I've found to concert euphs on the field. The Kings are way too end-heavy, and are restrictive to play. The Jupiters have improved since the first generation, and the kickers are nice to have. The System Blue horns are probably second best for ergonomics, and play quite well. And the less said about the Dynastys, the better.
  21. Tama drums are nice, but pricy. Same reason more corps don't use Kanstul. They're very expensive instruments to buy as a full set. Tama is also pretty new on the scene, so will probably take a very years to get them integrated for corps. Or if they pair up with a bigger brass manufacturer.
  22. Would interfere with their free days. /s Seriously though, would be nice to see more corps go up to the PNW. I always enjoyed those shows, but they were small. Except for 07, when everyone went up that way.
  23. Crown, Cadets, SCV, Bluecoats, Cavies, Crossmen all use Yamaha horns, although there may be a couple others (Colts maybe?) Devs are on their own System Blue modified King horns. Phantom, Boston, Blue Knights, Academy, Mandarins, and Surf are all on Jupiter. I think the rest are on King, with the exception of Spirit using Kanstul as noted above.
