  1. What makes him stupid? For thinking people in the larger world don't get or care about the difference between band and drum corps, or is the exposure on a national stage not worth it because they were labeled wrong?
  2. I'd be more interested to hear the Peter Gabriel version of it. I love the original, but the Scratch My Back edition is much more densely scored, and includes some great original parts. Bluecoats also used his version of "Flume" a couple of years ago. Now if I could only convince someone to use his cover of "Mirrorball," "My Body is a Cage," or "Heroes," I'd be set.
  3. No rule has been passed onto any corps staff that I know of so far. If DCI had passed a rule, they certainly did it without alerting any staffs or the general fan base
  4. They know what works best for them, and how to play to their natural strengths and minimize and weaknesses. Hence a formula to max out the great qualities of the organization? I don't know, I'm just throwing darts.
  5. Still one of the best moments to occur in sports. Both that championship moment of him looking for Whittenburg who sank the shot, and his ESPYs speech in 1993. He was a passionate man, and that really showed through. The 30 for 30 done on him and the 1983 Wolf Pack team is one of their best.
  6. Experience? As a marching member and staff member, the judges are always in the press box, and that's where you aim. No reason to aim for the top deck.
  7. It's because the Buchanan campus has three schools on it. It contains an elementary school, middle school, and high school all in one. Clovis Unified has built three of these Educational centers now, but the other two only have a middle school and high school on them. That's why the campuses seem so huge, but it's great for shows there. Tons of parking and warm-up space.
  8. Mandarins give members a Chinese coin on a necklace after their rookie year. Most members will also attach a shako link onto it for each year they march.
  9. It just opened in the fall. The big question surrounding the change is parking and facilities. We'll probably find out more in the next month, but it does not have anywhere near the spacious area that Buchanan had. Too bad it's having construction done. I too wonder why Lamonica wasn't chosen instead, or even Bulldog Stadium. Both would have been good choices and kept the show in Fresno. Easton isn't too far of a drive, just South on the 41.
  10. Not a powerpoint, but staffs do certainly sit down with judges and talk them through what the show is about, and what it means. Especially in the early season, when stuff is still rough or not fully fleshed out.
  11. Some would say that it's based to drum corps getting better and more competitive. I wish SCV's score would have stood for a bit longer than it did, but Crown was very good last year
  12. Because he fully embraced them and rode the change to one of the most successful periods in SCV's history? And before we chase this rabbit-hole about drum corps v. marching band, it was a short-sighted statement. Drum corps started sounding much better after the switch away from piston/rotor horns, and the 80s are usually viewed as the zenith of performance amongst most of this site's audience.
  13. "Two valves horn signal the end of drum corps and the beginning of marching band." -Gail Royer (I admit this is paraphrased, but Gail did rally pretty hard against two-valved instruments.
  14. Probably something to do with fit and uniform design as a whole. It keeps the number of uniform parts pretty low, and means you don't need a jacket design that goes all the way down to the waist. Helps make your marchers look taller and slimmer by artificially moving the waist higher, lengthens out the leg shape as well. Also creates much more form-fitting uniforms. Sorry, come from a family with fashion backgrounds. Hope that helps
  15. I think he marched a couple of years, I'm almost sure I saw him on tour in 2008.
  16. If this is a new rule, this is the first anyone seems to have heard of it. There have been rumblings, but usually the shirt rules only apply to Utah, schools that are in session, and any religious schools.
  17. The fix was in for Madison in 88. They told them which card to pick so they could win Finals.
  18. There is certainly grey. But your original post is that Phantom and Cavaliers dropping has done "more than their fair share" to bring SCV up. You're saying that SCV would not have improved without these two other corps falling. That takes a lot of credit away from SCV for being better than they were in 2010 and 2011. All of the corps in the field are getting stronger, and some will get stronger in a year than others. SCV's march back up the rankings was in the same time-frame as Phantom climbing back up. Phantom only dropped off in the last two years, when SCV was already into the Top 4/5. The corps you could make the case for would be Cavaliers, since they dropped from 3rd to 8th when SCV rose from 6th to 5th.
  19. Most corps now require hats and sunglasses during rehearsals. Does keep the eyes from getting messed up by the sun exposure, and the hats also keep the facial muscles from getting tightened up, making it harder for the kids to play. Does lead to some funny tan lines by the end of summer, but it's better than getting your face and eyes messed up. Guard is the one section of the corps that doesn't require stuff like this, because a hat would really limit their upward vision during equipment work.
  20. Not offended. But the whole picture illustrates that SCV got better through better staffing and design, not because someone else slipped. That seems to imply that SCV moving up the ranks was solely because Cavaliers went through a down period, which completely disregards Santa Clara getting better.
  21. That's certainly one way to look at it. Or SCV finding consistent design and instructional staffs. But sure, it's because of someone else that they're doing better now. /s
  22. And if we track one more year back, SCV was 7th in 2010 (show design and a really young corps was to blame there). So they've picked up positions for the last 5 years now.
  23. Does not appear as such, but the concept for Dante's Inferno has been done before, which was my larger point. I think if this is the conceptual idea Crown is running with, this will be an awesome show. As long as they can pull out a giant prop Satan for the heroes to climb down to escape.
  24. There are (or were?) rumors that the new version of Clowns was meant to be used in a show, either 2013 or 14.
  25. If this is the full show concept, this wouldn't be the first time the Divine Comedy has been done on the field. Vanguard Cadets did a full setting of the Robert W. Smith version in 2007.
