  1. I have a suggestion. When the Buccaneers win the 2016 DCA Championship, which they will - and 350 fewer fans and two fewer corps show up to DCA, I hereby propose that we simply cut and paste this thread. I'll do the same with my blog, that will save everyone a lot of time, which we can all spend watching competitive sports on television.
  2. 1. Reading Buccaneers 2. Somebody else 3. Somebody else 4. Somebody else 5. Somebody else 6. Somebody else 7. Somebody else 8. Somebody else 9. Somebody else 10. Somebody else
  3. I love the title of this post, the most genius and funny thing I have ever seen in rebuttal to a blog post, in the history of Drum Corps Planet. Bravo. Clap clap clap. However, to disagree with an objective assessment of the state of DCA based on the historical records is misguided. It's like the people who insist the Earth is flat. You are potentially dooming all-age drum corps through intentional ignorance of the facts and inaction. And for the record -- the solution for DCA is not to make the Reading Buccaneers lose. That would fail in misery. The solution for DCA is to give every other corps else an equal chance to win. And if the Buccaneers still win then - genius, they are better competitors. But right now, DCA is not competitive at all. Not because I said so, because the historical record says so. Once a year, everyone gets together and gives the Buccaneers big shiny trophies, tells them how great they are. And less people show up to watch it. Where is the competition? There is none. Why should anybody who loves to compete march in the Cabs, Renegades, Bushwackers, or any other corps who does not fit that model of success? Don't bother, if you ever want to win DCA - forget it. That goal is laughable, in fact, based on the last decade of your life. Form a soccer or softball team instead if you want to compete. You will not find it in DCA. Like I said, it's funny. But sad, at the same time. Like a mime.
  4. Simply put - If you want fans to attend a drum corps show to see a competition, DCA needs to become competitive again. Here's the explanation.
  5. I have not posted on DCP in a while, and I see that Drum Corps Planet power that be have instituted a "warning points" system for our profiles, and we can see how many "warning points" we have at any given moment. So, let me get this straight. I posted on DCP 5,432 times, caused untold amount of chaos and international incidents over the years, have at least three corps want to kill me at any given time -- and I have ZERO warning points? Zero? Not even so much as a demerit? Who created this system? How is this even possible? I am the only person in drum corps history to complete a triple-double - I have gotten entire drum corps or staffs banned from banned from (i) Carls's Jr (87 SCV), (ii) DCI critiques (SCV 95), (iii) WGI show design (Carolina Thunder 1999), (iv) DCA I&E (2009 on); AND (v) the internet (Renegades 99); Last but not least, the most relevant for our discussion now -- I successfully enraged every single person on Drum Corps Planet who had any connection whatsoever with the closing chapter of the Renegades-DCA debacle (2012 ish). Which should at least be worth a retroactive honorary warning point. Or seven. I hereby demand the full allocation of warning points be posted to my DCP profile immediately, as many warning points as you can get without actually being kicked off of Drum Corps Planet. This nice-guy billboard is killing my brand, people. Get with it. :)
  6. There is a strange Twilight Zone episode going on in the background of DCA right now ... it brought itself to life randomly - now, involves a blog post that went viral, a magical coffee cup purchased under mysterious circumstances, and the 2015 Hawthorne Caballero's new uniforms. Every day for the last week, this tale has gotten more mysterious and funny. And cool, in a twilight zone kinda way. Here's the story. Here's the cup -- all proceeds being donated to the Caballeros. Why? Because this coffee cup found the Caballeros, not the other way around.
  7. 14 days, more than 22k views ... the response to the Red Skies at Night sneak preview is an astonishing start for an indie sci-fi film with a drum corps component. On behalf of Meeka Pictures, I want to thank Dave Gibbs, Scott Chandler, Scott Johnson and the entire Blue Devils family for having the vision and belief to participate in this formerly-crazy idea that is morphing into an international art, film, and music coalition. The ideas and excitement coming from both sides of the Pacific about this growing team is amazing. If you have not seen the sneak preview yet - you can check it out here. Lee
  8. p.s. If you watch closely, you'll see a Renegade drummer in full uniform in this movie.
  9. Hi everybody. Happy March! This is the sneak preview to Red Skies at Night, a film that has the involvement of the Blue Devils, soon to be Renegades, and a Japanese pop star named Shizuka. The music was written by Shawn Glyde PLEASE KNOW It is not a drum corps movie. We're making a science fiction movie using drum corps performers and designers, a pop star, and Hollywood actors. In movie parlance, it's a "teaser" - a simple tool for producers to present a project and select footage to investors, actors, citizens etc Enjoy! Red Skies at Night - Sneak Preview
  10. Hi everybody. Happy March. I hope this note finds you and your corps well. You might have heard, I'm the director of a film called Red Skies at Night, which has the involvement of the Blue Devils, soon to be Renegades, and a Japanese pop star named Shizuka. In January, we all assembled in LA and shot Red Skies. Fyi, Red Skies at Night is the prequel to a feature film I wrote called Goodbye Blue Sky, which we will shoot in the fall. If the titles sound familiar, it's because they're named after Renegades 2004 and 2005, and incorporate elements and music from those shows. This is no "statement" of any kind, nor a drum corps show -- the title was chosen done out of respect for Renegades, and also because the team I assembled for the movie has the same mind set, rules and approach we used for Renegades (some of the same people too). Our music team has alumni or current staff from BD, SCV and Cadets, and our visual team includes Scott Chandler and Jay McCarroll. The music to this was written by Shawn Glyde, Blue Devils drum set specialist, and a key member of our music team 7 Yesterday, we released the sneak preview on You Tube, the initial reaction was crazy-fun, over 3,000 views in 24 hours. DISCLAIMER Do not expect a drum corps movie. We're making a science fiction movie using drum corps performers and designers, a pop star, and a Hollywood talent. In Hollywood parlance, this is a "teaser" - a simple and hopefully powerful tool for producers to present a project and select footage to investors, actors, citizens etc Enjoy! Red Skies at Night - Sneak Preview edited because I apparently have the proofreading ability of a 4th grader tonight.
  11. It is scary to add electronics to DCA, brings up all sorts of issues, including the additional expense to field a corps. But I think the entertainment value of drum corps needs to evolve with the times, or big-time competitive drum corps could eventually end.
  12. Awesome thought, Pete. You're on to something about something missing in alien culture -- the aliens in the film use sound as a weapon. When Flower discovers humans using music to communicate and express emotion, it baffles her. She falls in love with Earth. Our approach to integrating drum corps is a little different than you might expect. I think just throwing a drum corps in the middle of a movie and hoping for the best would be a disaster. Our concept is full integration and use of the drum corps performer's talents. For example, the last scene of Red Skies at Night (the short film prequel we're shooting in January takes place at a wedding. Flower sings Ave Maria (in Italian) and transforms the wedding into chaos with the effect her voice has on the people (I am simplfying). As Ave Maria grows, people in the crowd start moving in perfect synch with Flower, some start singing in Italian, all synched up perfectly, because they are communicating via telepathy. This is where it dawned on us that DCI corps kids would be the perfect addition to the cast, and having somebody like Scott Chandler from Blue Devils team up with our Hollywood team and create a genius visual masterpiece if we can, through movement, music and set design. I explained a lot of the concept plan on my blog yesterday, which you can check out here.
  13. Kind of both, actually, Flower has a super power and a weapon. Her voice. She also knows martial arts, but that's not the key to the story. The original short story we optioned was about a DJ that found a CD of music, played it on the radio. Turns out the music was deployed by aliens, setting the stage for the invasion of Earth by how it controlled people, like Invasion of the Body Snatchers, but using music as a weapon. We changed the character of the music CD to Flower, an alien fighter pilot who gets shot down over San Francisco. Flower has a magical voice, it affects people. In the feature film, Flower gets discovered singing Ave Maria. Bada boom, she ends up in a rock band and things get crazy when the kids all fall under her spell. The final scene in the feature film is in a dance club, with a DJ, live band and thirty live (drum corps) drummers. And a war, when the aliens send operatives to kill Flower, who has fallen in love with Earth and being a rock star, and has gone off mission.
  14. The next chaotic drum corps-related announcement related to this movie will concern the San Francisco Renegades. Here's a sneak peak. 7
  15. Hello everyone. Happy Tuesday. Here is a sneak preview to our first of a few drum corps-related press releases, which will gradually start appearing all over the place. Read it here. or here.
  16. Actually, the Crunchy Frog answer is none of the above. Crunchy can not return to drum corps, it's been banned, a ban that would need to turn into an invitation or whatever to even think of trying that route again. However - Crunchy Frog is, fact, coming to the big screen in a science fiction movie. But that's not the amazing drum corps story here, that comes in a day or two.
  17. Breaking - Scott Chandler and Scott Johnson join the creative design team for Goodbye Blue Sky
  18. Breaking - DCI and WGI drumming legend Scott Johnson joins the design team for Goodbye Blue Sky. The drum corps component of this movie is officially awesome. The next drum corps announcement will be made via a press release in Japan and the US, and it should happily make the drum corps community's head explode. The mission is not to open the door. We're trying to kick it down. Join the mission and get all breaking news about Goodbye Blue Sky on the Facebook page for Goodbye Blue Sky. 7
  19. This is awesome to see. The coolest part of all of this for me, however, is that Sky rehearses in Plymouth, literally right across the street where I spent most of our big holidays as a kid (aka Aunt Patty's house).
  20. Historically, there have been numerous attempts at integrating a DCI corps into a Hollywood movie, and exposing our activity to a worldwide audience. It has never been done before like this. Major drum corps press release and announcement coming soon. Get the breaking news on the Facebook page for Goodbye Blue Sky. 7
