  1. This really irks me...how can they charge $2,000 a season, have over $200,000 in revenue, plus the donations they get, and still not be able to compete? Did they think they needed to tour 8 weeks to be competitive? There's no way they should be folding. Bad money management.

Where was DCI on this? They really need to hire some kind of auditor who goes around and reviews all the corps' income, expenses, and travel plans.

To me this was their fault. They should have made sure this stuff doesn't keep happening.

I'm sure what the director meant was that they "couldn't continue to bring in enough money to field a corps and pay me enough at the same time"

Now I have no pipe dream plans to start a drum corps but I imagine that if I did, I would be living on bread and butter and soup for a while.

These drum corps need people who know how to stretch a penny like no one's business.

How many more corps foldings is it going to take before DCI gets their hands involved? Too many corps have folded. Magic, Capital Regiment, Memphis Sound, Impulse, Kiwanis Kavs, Southwind, just to name a few. I thought that the Glassmen having some money issues was a big red herring. What an embarrassment for DCI. And to think of all the kids that put everything they had into it. Oh well, I guess one good thing is that the talent will be a little bit more consolidated, maybe the quality of shows will go up a notch. I had high hopes for Music City.

    End of rant.

  2. From his Facebook page...

Thank you everyone SO MUCH for your thoughts and prayers. If I could, I would send cards and call to everyone who thought of me, but between my family, friends, and corps family, I think that's impossible. You guys are truly amazing, and words don't express the amount of thanks that I have to all of you! It is by the grace of God that I recovered so well with no deficits! I am being discharged from the hospital today and will return September 25 for surgery that will close the hole in my heart that the doctors believe caused the stroke. So I thank everyone for their support. I love you all:)

VERY GOOD TO HEAR PRAYING FOR YOU!!

  3. A corps shuts down mid season. That alone in and of itself calls things into question. Don't be so defensive nor as naive as you appear to be, "Mr. see you". Something is seriously wrong with management when a corps can't make it though a tour. I guess you're the 'see no evil' monkey of the trio when a group can't evidently keep membership nor their commitments, nor run things in a fiscally responsible way to competently finish out a season. Help them out? How? Would I trust a corps that evidently can't manage their season competently with any donation? Absolutely NOT.

As for clearing up issues, the corps management of both those corps needs to clear up THEIR acts. I don't care WHAT the cause, it's morally and ethically questionable when corps management can't get things done right enough to manage a tour properly and honor their commitment to their members- no excuses are acceptable.

Don't you even dare to try and pin me with owning the problem and divert blame from those who richly deserve it. I'm not the one who took kids money and then failed to honor my side of the contract. I don't care WHAT the feeble excuse is or the lame reason. It happened with these corps, and that is more than enough to point a finger.

So, what fingers in what pie and vested interest do YOU have in this? Do YOU plan on setting up something similar, or are/were you in on it?

Well, my apologies indeed to you, I had NO idea you had all the facts of what exactly happened with these corps. I also had no idea they didn't tour at all. I wish them all the best no matter what, and can't wait to see them on the field once again and for many years to come.

  4. Hold on thaaaar, Baba Looey!

The Kilts appear to be stable and fiscally responsible. They do what they do in DCA and are liked. Placements, not the best, but they do seem to have a stable structure that keeps them afloat. There's also not the stew of drama, inept management and lack of stable financing that seems to be the issues with VK and the Racine Scouts.

So, pulling them into that categlory might be more a tad unfair, huh?

I'm saying that just as an observer- I have no fingers in the Kiltie's apple pie/vested interest, man. :satisfied:

AND, I must ask, how do you know about this "stew" you mention in your post? or are you just going by whatever everyone here is saying? smart, very smart!! Let it be people and instead of going on here bashing corps, help them out, lend them a hand, or at the very least, clear up any issues you have with any of them, with THEM not in a public forum. I wish VK and Racine only the best in their future!

  5. Please correct me if I am wrong but it is my understanding that:

    a) Open Class corps get paid from DCI when they compete in WC/OC combined shows.

    b) Open Class corps do not get paid from DCI when they compete in OC only shows.

    c) It is becoming increasingly harder for OC corps to be included in shows with WC corps.

Am I wrong on any of these?

    100% CORRECT

  6. There is already revenue sharing in the form of show fees. A lot of the less successful corps are likely getting higher fees by performing in a show with the more successful corps than they would be getting if the successful corps were not there.

SO NOT true. OC corps do NOT get paid show fees.

  7. I did not have to speak with any of them; and neither do you; All I, or you, need to do is just read what they wrote in their own words (please read the letter from the Teal Sound director in the Teal Thread, or the response from the Revo Director in the Revo thread, etc...) They all admitted that they knew they did not have the funds to go out on tour before they ever left home. That, sir, was not looking out for the safety and welfare of the youth, and that, sir, is my real beef with what they did!

I agree with you!!! but did VK leave out on tour "knowing" like you say, that they did not have the funds? did they stop tour and leave everyone stranded? I don't think they did, did I miss something?

  8. In the full article the staff is quoted as saying "even the corps famous "converse" will be updated".

Converse is Converse is Converse. Either you are wearing "Converse" or you are not. If you say it will be "updated", the only logical conclusion I can come up with is that they are not wearing them.

I emailed them........they ARE wearing converse.....your "conclusion" is wrong

  9. :lookaround: A very esoteric opener (fast ride), losing the Converse, a clear statement from the director that the corps wants to move more with the times and a show title that backs that idea up? Hmmmmm...SOUNDS like a departure for VK. BUT, I won't pass judgement until I see it. Some thought Madison's 2012 was going to be a departure until word started spreading that there is more to that show than what's appears on the surface. I''ll tell you what though. You've got my attention, VK. I will need to make a point to see this show at some point in the summer and that if nothing else is a good thing for the corps. Generating interest is never a bad thing. Looking forward to what SOUNDS like possibly a NEW VK with an open mind.

I find it very interesting, and we all know VK can be interesting. Where does it say though that they are "losing the Converse"?

  10. Are Platinum and Impulse going to finals this year?

Well I can not speak for Impulse, but Platinum IS making plans to not only GO to finals this summer, but we are going there to compete in Open Class as well! Platinum is waiting until our DCI Evaluation, but we have EVERY intention of showing everyone in DCI what we can do! We will also be sharing some exciting announcements about the Corps on here soon too! So hang on, and watch us shine!

NOW THAT'S GOOD TO HEAR GUYS........GOOD LUCK!!!

  11. ECJ and Citations are not returning, as of yet. Impulse is not going to finals, in spite the fact that they announced it all over the place, and Platinum hasn't made a come back. I did "hear" that there may be 2 new corps brewing up in the Pacific Northwest area, would be nice to have for sure

  12. Thanks Jake.

So, if an Open Class corps was thinking of charging their members $2500, that seems a lot higher than the costs I am reading here for other Open Class corps.

Perhaps it's depending on whether the corps is going to championships or not. If a corps wasn't traveling from California, let's say to Indianapolis, they might not charge as much for membership.

But, as I read on one open class corps' website, it appears like $2500 is the member cost. That's almost as much as a World Class corps would cost with more than double the number of shows. Seems like a lot to me for only 12 performances. It's good to see not every corps is charging that much.

So, in your own opinion, what would be a fair fee to charge, with EVERYTHING included, if the corps was going to finals, and traveling half way across the nation to do so?
