Huntsville Hoopla (7/23/15)
George Dixon replied to cube's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
yes & no I LOVE the Cadets - but a lot of these lower tier corps don't get nearly as much air time.. periscope is huge for them, their fans / supporters / family /alumn I really think this app is a godsend for DCI - I hope they let it run as much as possible and don't start overly policing it Such a great way for more people to see the quality and entertainment value of the corps of all levels IMO And with that said, yes I hope someone catches the Cadets on scope tonight also hahaha -

Academy just wrapped up. Seemed like a very strong show by them tonight - improving rapidly and the crowd seemed to dig it as well! I love a show that appeals to fans of all ages - gotta get more families and kids back in the stands like BITD -

Academy has one of my favorite ballads of the year And the huge field sized visual statement with the whole guard and drum line on the swing flags is a great moment (they should find a way to extend that if possible) -

it's one of those stadiums with the full track and then a larger section of asphalt before you hit the low stands. The main stands are another section up - so the field looks about a half a mile away on these videos :) -

troopers sounded great - I love the change, having the solo guard person on the field and the rest of the guard starting off field (they came out of the tunnel during the preshow) do a much better job of illustrating the theme off the bat with the "horses" running along the fence line and the "cowboys" running along to watch them gallop by Visual and Guard is cleaning up very nicely - brass developing a nice full ensemble sound Same user is now scoping Academy btw -

Chris Buttars "CAButtars" just scoped Cascades - they looked great! -
I don't think a dark version of the Cadets uniform contradicts this statement. They could further adjust it for C2... JMO No one is saying "it's going to happen" - we are just reading the clues and jumping at conclusions - no law against that! Especially with his timing on this announcement re: C2 (possibly to silence the critics on "Cadets get new uniforms for the final 2 weeks!!!??? What a waste of $$") if that was the case. I personally think the new guard uniforms/silks etc will work just fine with the maroon and gold - but the "Black Friday sales" alludes to something bigger as well. JMO

Fiscal Responsibility
George Dixon replied to Dan Detweiler's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Totally agree The press release can help "hype up" interest and drive membership - but having been through the experience - I'd very much favor the "low profile, under promise and over deliver" approach in the future... Especially, as you say, when they're are young people involved. -
Fiscal Responsibility

seen this from various angels - inside, outside, donor, board member, and yes - admin it's very tough when this happens - especially so mid season or early in the spring (as it did with the corps I was in charge of) once the kids put in a ton of work already and paid dues etc our biggest priority in the heat of the moment was the members - paying back ALL dues paid, etc - and then helping place those interested in other programs our biggest "issue" in finding ourselves in the position was a lack of good foundation work to begin with (in the 3 years prior to "going live" with an organization), a seriously lack of volunteers, and frankly a lot of folks who didn't hold up their end of the promises made - whether it be time, donations or dollars -- there was certainly plenty of blame to go around the financial "fitness test" DCI now has in place is a great step - but it can only do so much as things can spiral downward quickly drum corps is frankly a huge black hole of money - new corps pay entry fees, buy equipment, buy uniforms, rent practice facilities, buy food, members pay little or no member dues for a "start up" and it spirals down hill from there it's frequently easy to cast blame - be it the "director" or the "administrative team" or the "community" or of course "DCI usually when one of these doesn't work out it is a combination of most of the above - with often volunteer staff and members left in the lurch I aim to start a DCI corps again some day - as my pockets grow deeper I will. Frankly I'd rather just fund it and set it off on a good start than beg and sell tshirts and scrape by The later is only a "pipe dream" all too often -
What makes a show "BOA style" or "bando"?
George Dixon replied to N.E. Brigand's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
like Broken Arrow & Tarpon Springs are bad things Tarpon Springs guys run the Boston program - right? -
Where have the dynamics gone?
George Dixon replied to FTNK's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
they've made some good musical changes during the season to add dynamic range and contrast, which is a good thing -
What makes a show "BOA style" or "bando"?
George Dixon replied to N.E. Brigand's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
I know we're having a conversation here - but I've gotta just interject that this is one of those things where if you know you know - if you don't know you will never know there are dci shows that are quite "BOA" and there are BOA shows that are quite DCI there are also BOA shows that are quite WGI as well as DCI shows quite WGI certain programs, throughout the years - or in a given year - that tilt toward another style... A BOA show that's quite DCI: https://youtu.be/GzJAzBrIlw4?t=2m29s A BOA show that's quite WGI: https://youtu.be/GF7MBLwl5ZI?t=2m38s But I wouldn't call either of these "bando" -
Hypothetical Cadets Uniform Question
George Dixon replied to seen-it-all's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Exactly. Now this is getting interesting, -
Hmmm... Hopkins just announced that c2 will have a new look next year. I wonder if they will be black versions of cadets uniforms, slightly used....

they are changing literally four counts backward - so more an adjustment than a "Major change" -

I've been at shows were people all around me are loudly announcing who won well ahead of the announcement. Yeah, it's a farce. It's really not about us on the internet waiting... -
that sounds like communism - you MUST decide!! :)
