  1. Sadly, gone are the days when bands imitated what drum corps were doing. Now the DCI model is to use "cool" concepts seen in BOA and WGI.
  2. Either way, the way this season has panned out for Scouts has left me so disapointed. I saw some issues in early-season videos, but I never imagined this production would come up so short. I began to worry when it was recieved in a very lukewarm way out west. But I really felt it had so much potential that it would rise to greatness. Unfortunately it hasn't, for various reasons. Chalk this up as a lesson learned on my part. Temper my excitement and don't buy the hype.
  3. Holograms on the field for drum corps shows like we're seeing at Opening Ceremonies
  4. "I don't understand the scaffolding, it doesn't seem to have a purpose in relation to the JCS theme/music." Scaffolding used in movie version of JCS
  5. Back from ATL and got my first live read. I love this show and see the potential, but also realize there was so much wrong from the outset that it can't all be fixed in such a short time. I never really paid attention to staging until this year with all the talk about Scouts bad staging..and after watching other corps I see it's a big problem. IE..a woman next to me exclaimed out loud at the hanging scene...but I never saw it. I was looking at something else on the field. I like the new ending drill, but I had more of a problem with the music and it's basically the same with the exception of some tweaks. I thought many of the transition issues were fixed, but the Lady Gaga stuff still seems so weird and out of place..which leads to odd transitions. As a drumline guy, I see things have cleaned up, but there are still individual mistakes at times. But my biggest thing is writing and style just lacks so much from other groups. BUT...overall I still think it's a good show as far as just music and drill. The story line gets in the way of what could be a straight-up drum corps show..but I guess the DCI today for ya.
  6. Was told there have been major housing issues. Schools dropping out at the last moment and generally being uncooperative. Sad that schools aren't willing to help.
  7. I'm wondering if folks have lost hope on the season already and moved on to 2017. I still have hope that with work and whatever this new ending is that Scouts will begin a late-season push.
  8. Is there anyone looking to part with a prime seat ticket? I'll gladly pay face value. All available right now are way out away from center.
  9. Shocked to see Scouts thread so far down. Very quiet considering tnite's results. Any words on the new ending?
  10. 1998 Scouts..sandwiched between Pirates and JCSS part uno....but I'm partial, too
  11. I guess I still don't understand the idea that you have to be one or the other. SCV comes to mind. They still look and sound like the SCV I know, but have modern, cutting-edge shows. I feel Scouts can still be "The Scouts" in look and feel with cutting-edge shows while not selling its soul for the sake of a number. Early views of this show had me thinking it was cutting edge and different. Reading the FB post regarding finances makes one realize how much of a thing that is. That's a difficult hurdle to overcome. While this year's show is a re-make, other recent shows like New York Morning and last year's production show the Scouts can be themselves while also putting a product on the field that fits into what today's competitive system requires.
  12. Makes me sad, too. I really thought this show had that "it" factor that would push them into that next level. There were some really good points made on the alum facebook site regarding finances with Scouts as opposed to upper echelon corps, but I'm beginning to think this show idea was a swing and a miss. I have a bad feeling we're gonna all be disapointed with San Antonio results. Nothing against the marching members as they're working hard and making life-long memories. But As the season goes along it seems this particular production from a design standpoint missed the mark.
  13. I've always had an issue with the overuse of body movement. My biggest issue, which includes body movement, is how DCI is no longer THE cutting-edge thing that others follow. DCI has fallen in line with Winterguard and BOA..so now we have ever-changing corps costumes instead of uniforms, elaborate body movements that you HAVE to have to please judges and props props props galore. When you are forced to have an ever-evolving wardrobe and a Broadway-worthy list of field props, only those corps with the monetary means to do so will be successful.
  14. I'm sure they're on top of things, but staff needs to start figuring out where things are going wrong or they're gonna get left behind and we'll see the Men battling for a finals spot. Seems the numbers have leveled while others are passing or creeping up.
  15. Speaking of the drumline...have they switched away from the mylar heads yet? If not, i could see that being part of the dirt. Also not so sure I agree with mylar early with a switch to kevlar later. The two have a whole different feel and i'd imagine it takes the ears some time to adjust to a switch. That doen't explain problems with tenors, but that practice makes me wonder about snares. Do any other lines to that?
  16. I get that, but I had higher expectations. A big jump where this wouldn't even be close. A move by Scouts to that next tier.
  17. I had such higher hopes for Scouts than this. Feel like I'm witnessing Auburn football all over again..high expectations that nose dive
  18. Another past "star" from recently in the percussion circle would be Ralph Nader with BD..now of BYOS fame.

  20. The more I keep reading about Scouts helps me to feel as though I may know what I'm talking about...somewhat. I said when the first run of the whole show was put on facebook alumni site that I had big concerns about the ending. It remains the same but needs an overhaul. Bothers me to hear of dirty drums and less-than-powerful horns. That company front is designed to rupture eardrums and internal organs...seems like it might be a mosquito bite instead.
  21. And herein lies one of my qualms with the direction DCI has gone. You can't just do straight up music and drill anymore. Unfortunately so much of what goes into scoring is totally out of the hands of the marching members. To be competitive you have to have a theme, you have to have a visual package that tells the theme clearly.....all things that are out of the control of the kids who are actually doing the show. And before someone jumps down my throat, I know it's always been that way as far as a staff deciding the show music, title, theme, direction, etc. But in today's DCI, to be competitive it seems like you have to have some obscure thematic production. A show like I marched with Scouts was just pure jazz.....there was no theme, no guessing...it had jazz in the title, we played jazz and it scored well because the marching members played that dadgum jazz show good. I remember Jeff Moore telling us something along the lines of "we're not here trying to tell the life and death story of a butterfly...we're playing jazz". Something like that wouldn't fly now.
