  1. The problem we have with recruiting high school and college age members is that they can't go to DCA Championships without making a choice of band camps, classes or going to DCA. In my experience with local band teachers/directors, about 40% of them don't want anything to do with drum corps but most are receptive or sympathetic to our cause. Instead of offering a discount to students, why not offer one to educators? I know they are very busy that time of year but I'm sure some would take advantage of it. Perhaps many of the local teachers would be willing to bring students who show an interest to the championships just to check it out, and if the championships were rotated between 3-4 cities/areas, there would be a greater exposure to the local MB community. We're willing to travel where ever the championships are held but when Labor Day falls late it's difficult to depend on a certain number of members going.

  6. The Standish Guards of Plymouth would like to invite any brass players in the area to come on down January 29th, who would like to help out a growing corps to compete in two Bugler's Hall of Fame shows. We have an instructor and a few committed players to go along with our growing drum line and need a few more to compete as a mini corps for these shows. If you are an experienced player, then you only need to come to a few practices to run over the songs. The songs are fairly easy, fun and the main goal is to be able to perform. We have some new and used horns ready to go and will be purchasing more. We have some great ideas for the future and this next step will go a long way to help bring a competitive corps to Plymouth. Even though we are a small group, we are growing, are determined to compete, have been purchasing new horns, have aquired more percussion and most important; we will be going to Annapolis for DCA! Our goals are simple, to compete whenever we can, play great music as best we can and of course have fun doing so. So if you are in the Plymouth area come on down and say hi, we have a great group of people and all are welcome. Happy Mother's Day! 9. I have a small start up corps here in Plymouth. Being a drummer for almost 40 years I know minimal about brass instruments. As we are gathering funds for purchasing horns, is there a difference in the sound if the finish is sivler plate, nickel, chrome or brass lacquer? Have any corps fielded brass lacquer finish? thanks, Dennis Standish Guards
  10. The Standish Guards of Plymouth, MA is looking for more brass players for the Buglers Hall of Fame show in April. We need 7-8 more and we will be able to perform our first performance as a mini-corps. If you live near Plymouth we will be practicing Thursday evenings at the Plymouth Community Intermediate School, 117 Long Pond Rd. from 7pm-8:30. Percussion and Color Guard always welcome. 12. The Standish Guards Drum and Bugle Corps of Plymouth, MA is proud to announce Andy Shaw as our new brass instructor for 2012. Andy is a graduate of Bridgewater State University and works for the Plymouth Schools as a music teacher. We are currently raising funds for more horn purchases and recruiting anyone, any age or experience, to give us a try. Our goal is to have enough members for a mini-corps, play good songs and have fun. As I have stated before, we intend to compete, no matter how many members we have and we will be going to Annapolis. Also our percussion section will be competing at the Bugler's Hall of Fame shows in Springfield, Boston and Bridgeport. We are growing with 10 drummers and only a handul of horns, but we are steadily getting there! Anyone looking to join us feel free to contact me. 13. We had a great time last year and wouldn't miss it! Our percussion ensemble has been working very hard and for some of our drummers this will be their very first taste of competition. Good luck everyone! Dennis O'Neill Standish Guards

  17. Here in Massachusetts in the past 5 years we are seeing a resurgence of drum corps. Red Knights, Defenders, Imperials, Standish Guards and more, are small to medium size corps. Just because a corps is all-age doesn't mean you can't have a great corps experience. Around the south shore, we now have 3 corps at the same time some school band programs are being cut back while others are being decimated and some are thriving. I think the Pittsfield Red Knights have the right idea about getting their members college credits for perfoming and this is something we are going to look into also. Ideas can be found, it's all about adapting. We need both, corps and band! Dennis O'Neill Director, Standish Guards Plymouth, MA
  18. The Standish Guards will begin rehearsals every Thursday night on November 3rd from 7pm-8:30, located in the Civil Air Patrol building outside Plymouth Airport. We have been slowly aquiring equipment and have new members joining but we are still looking for those elusive brass players! We are a competitive corps and have a growing drumline that is eager to compete as a mini-corps. We will be competing in the Bugler's Hall of Fame competitions starting in February. If you live near Plymouth County and are looking for something this winter stop by or contact us, everyone is welcome and we have a low cost $10 rehearsal fee. We now have a Facebook page so stop by there for updates or sign on as friends. Thanks to Major Bob Yeager of the Pilgrim Squadron CAP for all his continous support! Hope to see you in Plymouth for the Thanksgiving Alumni Show. Dennis O'Neill Director, Standish Guards Inc. 781-217-5730 message line
  19. The Standish Guards of Plymouth, MA has a small but growing and enthusiastic drumline that would really like to compete as a mini-corps in 2012 and is seeking any brass players, regardless of experience, in the Plymouth county area. We will be rehearsing on Tuesday evenings, location tba, and possibly an additional one Sunday a month. The drumline has been actively competing in Bugler's Hall of Fame and DCA for the past 2 years. We are really trying to make that jump from competitive drumline to a mini-corps for the upcoming BHoF competitions and beyond. We may not be the biggest and baddest drumline out there but we are determined and committed to making this work and have fun doing so! I can tell you that we will go to as many competitions as we can including Annapolis next year. We may do a parade or two, but our main focus is competition and just trying to be as good as we can, something we can be proud of. So if anyone is in the area and interested, drop me a line. See you in Plymouth if your coming up for the Thanksgiving Show! Dennis O'Neill Director Standish Guards Inc. 781-217-5730 msg line
  20. The Standish Guards from Plymouth MA will be having a new member/open house on April 17th from 1-3pm at the VFW Post 1822, 22 Seven Hills Rd Plymouth. We will have a short presentation of what we would like to achieve this year, our percussion ensemble will play, hopefully some guest players and of course tasty snacks! We currently have a small but eager drumline that would love to hear from some brass players in the hope that we can have a mini-corps to compete at this years' DCA Championships in Rochester. So if you live near Plymouth and would like to help us out come on down and say hi. If you are going to be at Bridgeport for the Bugler's Hall of Fame show come on over and introduce yourself, we would love to talk! No matter how many members we have we will be going to Rochester, our goal is to be a competitive corps no matter what it takes. We have also been forunate to have Aquarian Drumheads as our first endorser. Hope to see you there! Dennis O'Neill Director Standish Guards Inc. 21. The Standish Guards of Plymouth has a small but very enthusiastic drum line that would like to compete in the upcoming Bugler's Hall of Fame mini-corps competitions. If you play horn and live near Plymouth County and would like to do something this winter, stop by our practice, send us an email, pm or call our message line and help us bring drum corps to Plymouth. We have an easy schedule every other Sunday at the Civil Air Patrol building located at Plymouth Airport from 11am to 1pm, (great place to practice at an airport!) easy but fun songs and a low rehearsal fee. The drumline has a street beat, 2 solos and is currently working on 2 charts. Even though we are a new corps and we don't have the latest equipment, we do have fun and we hope to grow this corps and have a few surprises over the next couple of seasons. Regardless of how many members we have, we will always try to compete when we can, and if we don't have enough members for mini-corps we will still be in the I&E. Color Guard members are also encourged to join! Practice schedule, Nov 28th, Dec 5th and 19th. If you are in Plymouth this weekend for the big parade and show, stop by our table during the parade at Thunderbolt Music located next to the Post Office on Main St and say hi. Thanks and take care! 22. Finances are the biggest hurdle we are facing, but I think as we plan our mini-corps for 2011, having music that is both fun to play yet challenging is the biggest difficulty. When you have enthusiastic members with various levels of experience, it can be difficult. We have decided to take our time building from a few members and to grow long term. We're planning 3 years out by meeting easy to obtain goals and building a solid base. We could only have our percussion section compete at Rochester this year, but with Bugler's Hall of Fame doing winter shows, that will go a long way to helping us achieve what we want for next year. No one said it would be easy! But I look to the future and I see what can be. Dennis O'Neill Director, Standish Guards, Plymouth, MA
  23. Can somebody tell me how to open the zip file for the I&E application? All I get is error messages or multiple blank windows. I'm not very techno-savvy, I hit things with two wooden sticks for a living! thanks Dennis
  24. Congatulations and good luck with everything in the future! Not easy starting a corps but well worth it. Dennis O'Neill Standish Guards, Plymouth MA
  25. These shows keep getting better and better! My hat's off to everyone at BHOF for running a great show. This Saturday will be another one. We are already looking into hosting our own show next year. With so many corps going inactive, this is a great way to stay in or to even start in this activity. I would like to see more drummers in the I&E next year though! Dennis Standish Guards
