  1. Prelims / Finals

    Cabs / MBI

    Bucs / Cabs

    MBI / Bucs

    Fusion / Fusion

    C2 / C2

    CV / CV

    Bush / Bush

    Hurcs / Gold

    Sun / Hurcs

    Gold / Sun

    Sabers / Govies

    Govies / Sabers

    Sun / Sun

    CT / CT

I think with an extra read against their competition, MBI could pull it off. Thats only if the hornline can clean up that score. I think Sabers have come back to reality and Govies take it Finals night. Also really would not surprise me to see a tie between 2nd/3rd in Open. I think it will be that close.

  2. You obviously weren't in Annapolis for DCA Championships last summer. If you had been, you wouldn't have made such a blatantly absurd statement.

Any DCA show I have been to, I have felt out of place to give an ovation or loud applause. Golf claps seem to be the thing.

Now, I have not been to a show for awhile so it could be different now but thats my observation.

  3. Ok...I dare you to go watch the 2003 Cadets "MY Favorite Things" Show. The crowd for the most part except for "impact points" in the show and towards the end of the show where there is high energy are almost stoic during the entire show.

When they get to Malaguena you can clearly hear the crowd during the entire portion of the Malaguena woo hoo ing and cheering. It was clearly the Fan Favorite portion of the show. At 9:51 at the end of Malaguena you see a camera pan to the Audience and the Audience is climbing to the feet for a standing O. It don't get much better than that.

Malaguena sets the tone for the energy for the ending of the show and the crowd reaction at the end of the show. Without it "My Favorite Things" might have been just another 3rd place show. Instead its a show for the record books.

Cadets 2 would be wise to go back and review the 2003 crowd reaction on the Video and take heed.

But thats DCI. Doesnt really matter what you do in DCA, crowd reaction is going to be minimal either way.

  4. Ill make a full prediction once corps announce class status but...

Its going to be very interesting between the top 3 from last year. Can MBI bounce back? Will Cabs threaten for 1st? Will Bucs hold them both off?

Also... CV and C2 will be a great battle and it wouldnt surprise me to see one of them threaten the top 3.

Class A should be great as well. Id love to see a close battle between Govies and Sabers again!

  5. Sounds like they have not closed the doors totally on DCA.

I would certainly hate to see a watered down..neutered version of the Renegades come back to DCA though. I think one thing that seperated Renegades from the rest of the pack was the Renegades Swagger both on the field and off the field. I mean the place to party was to the Renegades Hotel. I always made it a point the years I had a rental car or transportation to stop by and see the Renegades and the Statesmen because they both knew how to throw down and party like rock stars.

Hope to see them back in thier old form some day soon at DCA.

and coincidentally, neither of those corps are competitive anymore.

  6. A short term way to spread the DCA brand outside of the northeast may best be served to a DCI Regional crowd in say Atlanta. Have a limit of 3 DCA corps (minimum for a DCA sanctioned show) so fans get introduced to DCA and to corps outside of that particular region. Instead of say Minnesota Brass going out east they could perform at the regional in Atlanta. The next year or same year say CorpsVets could do the same and travel up to DCI-Minnesota. One year travel could be to Denver or California by other non-eastern corps to continually grow the brand outside of the northeast. The idea is that you can introduce DCI fans to DCA in a considerably safe way to the largest audiences to generate interest in DCA and DCA shows outside of the northeast. Ideally then northeast corps would have time to consistently generate enough revenue to travel outside their region to other DCA shows. Or maybe I'm just crazy and none of this makes sense...

Then you lose the incentive for those corps to travel long distance. Sure, its helping spread the DCA brand (which is the argument here) but do you think MBI travels just to be nice? No. They travel to go head to head with corps of their caliber and to get a mid season read by DCA judges. Same can be said for CV. No coincidence that one of these corps is holding strong at the top and the other is on the move.

If you take away that DCA show and make them do a DCI regional with few DCA corps and DCI judges... whats that really going to accomplish for their competitive success? Not to mention corps that travel far tend to have holes for the first trip... what kind of message is that going to send the DCI fan base when they watch a corps with 5-10 holes.

Im more into the idea of working in an Ohio show at some point. Yes there would need to be creative marketing and there would be risk but its a decent middle ground for corps to meet up mid season. Then again... I might just be selfish in hoping to have a DCA show in my backyard.

  7. Ok, I'm through beating a dead horse. Most of us aren't decision makers for DCA corps anyway.

No one wants a single trip to fold a corps, obviously...

All I'm saying is that it is important (if we see the all-age activity as a national one) for Eastern corps to invest in that concept and travel every once in a while. This should be done in a well supported, well thought out manner every few years. Doing this would increase the brand of DCA and make the overall activity better.

It should certainly be done in a fiscally responsible manner, but roadblocks and current situations shouldn't limit DCA from being a national organization. If being a national organization isn't really a priority, then that is fine, just stop saying that it is.

Well, they advertise Championships as WORLD so... you would hope they at least consider it National.

  8. As Amy said, sure they sold roughly 200 more tickets than last year ( i was 2 of them....had a month old baby last year, couldn't go). But expenses went up. Jimmy and the committee at Bucs have done a wonderful job since taking over in the 90's, but they're not idiots......they are not going to willingly lose money "for the good of the activity". And if they were to work a deal that covered their expenses, the host is sure to take a bath. Looking at guidestar no one's really making much on their shows out there unless it involves DCI corps.

Doesnt seem to stop the non eastcoast corps.

  9. Depends on how you define "loaded." MBI has more money in the bank than the other top 9 DCA corps combined. (Well, you'd maybe have to exclude C2 if you count YEA's resources) MBI has the largest budget. Their assests are greater than Phantom Regiment's. This is all on public record if you do the research. They did it based upon financial prudence, diversification of income and on top of that, they can still afford to go out east twice per season.

THAT's the model that other DCA corps need to follow if this activity has any chance of long-term survival.

Doesnt MBI also run 3 other ensembles (along with the full corps) under that "Incorporated" umbrella?

Could explain the large gap between them and other organizations.

  10. Sun Devils, Tampa Bay Thunder, CV, Alliance, and maybe Gold & Sound (although they are maybe closer to the NE) could have a Southeren Showdown in August. There have been corps out of Nashville area. Maybe with support, one of these could take hold and Nashville or Severeville could be the hub for DCA South?

TBT is no longer in the DCA circuit. That leaves 4 corps, 3 if Gold cant make the trip.

  11. DCA, DCA South, and DCA Midwest are growing. The possibility for increased regional competition far exceeds the value of one expensive trip with holes in the drill.

Right... but what would be the difference between a normal midwest or south show and a regional... all the corps would be the same. Basically any non eastcoast show is already a regional because there are so few shows.

Take a look at what corps would be at these so called regionals:

South: Gold, CV, Sun Devils, Alliance

Midwest: MBI, Chops, Govies, Kilties, CT, High Country, *Lakeshoremen

Yes, those are some dang good corps BUT... the only real "ringer" in there for the Midwest is MBI and the only one in the south is CV.

People will show up anyway to see them but imagine if Cabs or Bucs made a trip there... I bet more people would be interested in going. I bet you anything that people skip one show to go to one the next week because thats the show MBI is taking a trip to.

Is there a huge benefit to the east corps? Not really, but it would be good for every corps at that show and would promote DCA a bit more in those regions, showing it really is a national circuit.

(no disrespect to any corps, just using facts that the top Open corps bring in bigger crowds)

  12. I still do not see any complexity with any part of the MBI production. Just being honest - I feel like I am calling out the Emperor's new clothes. I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up

    1) Reading

    2) Hawthorne

    3) MBI or C2

Design wise MBI should be marching cleaner sooner stronger and I think some of the design is a bit too soon to use from other corps - cross drill sets, changing into Black unis......and the list goes on.

    Emperor's New Clothes -

So whats a fair time frame before someone in DCA is allowed to make another cross? Lets be real... corps borrow/alter/use ideas and designs they have seen before... or even come up with the same idea at times... its nothing new.

Also, not sure what black uniforms you are talking about, they definitely dont do that.

    -------

After seeing Bucs number this weekend... its too close to vote on. Im going to say Bucs and MBI take #1 and #2, within .4 of each other but who will be on top? No idea. Cabs wont even be in the conversation... this year.

  13. There are some anti-Cab sentiment here. People actually voted that they thought the would end up in 8th?

Same with the 5th and 6th place thread.

Anyone who is putting Bucs, MBI and Cabs below 3rd is either ignorant, a troll or a hater(you could make the weak argument about Cabs falling to 4th I suppose).

  14. Im going to wait and see what kind of number Bucs get this weekend before I vote.

As of right now I think Minnesota has the advantage currently leading and have the weekend off to clean but if the Bucs post a big score, Minnesota will be playing a lot of catch up on prelims and that could bleed into finals as well.

I dont see Cabs breaking into the top 2... this year.

  15. Yes i agree but the System does account for staging and performance which was not taken into consideration in scranton in my opinion from that judge....also the apprach is really not that different considering the writers especially for weapon at bucs are students of the designer for Cabs....the work is crafted along the same style and im my opinion Cabs does it better, they are spinning like a junior copr guard placed in an all age corp. I just dont agree with the work with the ladders seems like a cover so that most of the guard does not have to really spin anything. Again I am sure people dossagree with me, just my opinion and we will see what happens in Annapolis.

I think you misspelled your user name... let me correct that for you.

    cabsguardfan*

    fixed.

  16. 3. I'm fine with seeding based on last year's finals. It is the only benefit for doing well last year, and was the last show that the corps were judges in the same place at the same time. That is as fair as it could be in my opinion.

I dont think a different corps make up should have any impact on the next years corps. Its a different corps each year and the two should not be tied together.
