  1. You know what is P***ing me off about this topic? It's the fact that there is one (maybe more) SCV alumni from the 1970s who are going onto the Facebook Drum Corps Planet group, and absolutely trashing SCV. Like, this person is posting really stupid immature memes, and other pictures of anything SCV, and just thrashing around their hate and disdain for anything SCV, including Photoshopped pics of SCV leadership and laughing at it all. Then he's also posting pics of himself playing snare drum in an SCV uniform (he calls them costumes) from the 1970s, but instead of green tunic, he changes the color to blue. Then, he's starts posting statements verging on politics and his opinion about being woke, etc., stating he is a "proud" alumnus of SCV. Absolutely zero respect for SCV. So, if there are any other alumni of SCV reading this, please tell your fellow alumni to have some respect for your own drum corps. It's tacky, it's offensive and very immature. You're grown adults. Just stop. Thanks for listening.
  2. Well, where do I begin. I've seen many of the comments on here. And I have seen the Cadets this year in a few videos, the latest being at Dekalb. This year's show has got to be the weakest show since perhaps 1981 or 1980. It is SOOOO literal and heavy handed with the crosses, bibles, and narration. Drum corps to me is supposed to be entertaining and perhaps a little fun. This show isn't really fun. It's kind of depressing, confusing and sad. The uniform colors do not help. The guard uniform colors (gold, tan, beige-y) are depressing and ugly. The blue stained windows colors really don't go with anything and are kind of useless. There are about 25 or 30 of those large panels, and those things are not easy to move around and transport. And they just sit there. The benches...the narration....stop already. Yes, it's snippets of Bernstein's Mass, which my guess is that many people don't know. This show is like a bad tent revival! "LET US PRAY!"...like a command. UGH. stop already! The arrangements of the music. Depressing and confusing. And some of the horn intonations and ticks. Ugh. The large silver cross being used as a weapon during the 12/8 (jazzy section). UGH! The cross tarp being used as the dumping ground for the shedding of uniforms. UGH The unimpressive ending (and weak) company front. UGH!! My head and drum corps soul hurts! ..... Where do we go from here? My take on this is that the direction of this corps is not expected and is not the right direction. Given the past two or three years, and combined with this year, I would say that there could be some changes at the top. Hop, is an awesome director but overall who's responsibility is it for deciding what product is put on the field? Maybe Hop is getting burned out and doesn't have that "touch" any longer. Maybe this could be a sign to take some time off from Cadets, or let someone else take over the creative reins. Note - this isn't a dig at anyone with the intention of an offense, but it's very common to get burned out, or lose the "touch" that you once had, and it's okay to admit it too. These kids in the Cadets are great, and my love of drum corps, like many of you out there, will not die because of this years Cadets version.
  3. I am not feeling BD. I just watched a recent vid and I was kind of turned off. Way too much "park and bark" and way way too much intense "blastissimo" in way too high notes. Yeah I like loud drum corps but there isn't any subtlety or any other dimension beside loud and blast. Not a fan of the whole drumset with sampled Shikira and other people interludes. Lots of "follow the leader" and scatter drill and run to your spot drill.
  4. 1981 Tour Freelancers Rehearsing at an elementary or middle school in Pennsylvania. Cymbal player, kind of a druggy loser type (yeah I said it). He had marched 2nd or 3rd soprano the previous year. We are rehearsing in sectionals, then around mid afternoon, Parker calls the entire corps for a special meeting. We all gather around Parker and the other instructors. So the cymbal line comes in the front, and so one of the drum instructors (Allen, I believe) tells whatshis name cymbal player, to please put the cymbals on the ground and leave now back to the gym and pack up your stuff. We all looked at each other and wondered what was going on. So the guy did and just kind of in a sorry mood, quietly put the cymbals down and sulked back to the gym. Then Parker began speaking. He was pretty mad, and commanded and demanded "No DRUGS!", etc. Turns out the cymbal player got caught smoking weed during sectionals on the ground of the school by the school security detective. What a stupid dumb thing to do. He was immediately driven to the Greyhound Bus station and sent home that afternoon. Never saw or heard from him again.
  5. - Pit people look ridiculous with all of that overacting gesticulating while they are playing. Quit looking like you are mimes! - I think SCV should have beat up the piano keyboard player after 2015 finals where he totally forgot/spaced out on his Bach solo at the very beginning of the show. - George Hopkins doesn't post to Facebook enough. - I'm so looking forward to the first transexual to march a top 12 drumcorps! - Why do people have to shush me while I'm talking and laughing during a drum corps show, especially during the quiet and soft parts? Geez! It's a free country, isn't it? - Can't wait for the first corps member to give birth during summer tour season!
  6. Watching the broadcast... CAVALIERS! AWESOME!!!!
  7. Arrived home in Spring (Cypresswood & Ella). Thanks to all of the corps. Every year for the past 3 or 4 years, the shows have been very entertaining I have to say, thanks to all of the different and creative ideas and concepts. Tonight was a really entertaining show. Overall the loudest and best response in my opinion was The Cavaliers. Really a great show! I got riled up when that freaking Trump (can't stand that guy) sign appeared, but then later on a Hillary sign appears. It's just really well done with all of the narration and effects. I thought Crown should have won honestly. That was a great show. The whole story line is really worth watching. The crowd ate it UP! BD horns sound amazing! Santa Clara sounded very very nice all together. Great marching! I could tell in certain spots in the 2nd half where there was silence that there would be fill in's later coming. This was sort of confirmed (wink wink) with one of the ladies in the SCV souvie trailer. That big metal tree. It just stands there and does nothing. I asked what's it going to do, and she smiled and I knew something was coming. She said changes coming next week before DCI Southesastern. Hope so! I want that tree to grow leaves or spawn little trees or spin around or do something! Or light up??? Disappointing: The Cadets. I mean they sound great the first half. Then the 2nd half ... just kind of falls. I don't know. I just lost interest. The same musical ideas and themes and intensity rehashed from the 1st half. This is an "off" year I'm afraid. Those wedding cakes don't move or do anything. And the statues on the smaller cake... what are they doing??? Fighting or what? Didn't really make sense to me. Not surprising they received the least amount of applause all night. Rather tepid response at that. BLOO: Wow.... all around what a great show. Interesting on so many levels. I LOVE how they end the show with that lean back and head turn towards the audience to the sound of the guitar. The ramps are so dog gone interesting and fun! I mean, who doesn't want to strap on a snare drum and play some snazzy rad beats and then slide down one of those ramps! ME ME ME!
  8. Pete was with SCV in '78 too. Remember that DCI Finals Broadcast? Pete was also with Freelancers. '82-'84 at least.
  9. I can't (?) wait until there is a massive pileup on those ramps when people start falling down, or the ramp breaks or what have you.
  10. I keep watching the BCoats show.... I've seen alot of drum corps in the past 35 years or so, but honestly, this is really one of the most, if not the most, completely interesting and so well designed shows I've ever seen. The music is awesome, the colors (!) and the entire concepts. All of the sliding, and walking/running up and down those ramps, Brazillian/South American Mod! I'm predicting Gold for Bloo 2016. And it's only June. I can only imagine what else they can clean and add. Can't wait to see Bloo live!
  11. No - they should not. Keep crap like this out of Drum Corps.
  12. Well, SCV has Paul and Sandi Rennick. UNT. Enough said!
  13. BEAUTIFUL... opening statement... awesome!.....
  14. Cadet's brass and percussion uniforms are *dark* black with the marble sash. And the hats are black with the white plume. Combine that with a black wedding cake and Pines of Rome and the other selections of music, it just doesn't (to me) fit together. Something is off on the entire "Feng Shui" of this entire show. Yes I know it's only June.
  15. Wedding cake with trash icing... wow, that's strong, but kind of ...accurate I have to say.
  16. God no. Too too much dancing, prancing, trombone glissandos and electro-rap. Where's my hot dog.
  17. The Roxanne Tango.... really don't like it. Doesn't fit in. Yet (???) This is becoming more and more WGI.
  18. The stagecoach... there is a husband and wife team based on the West Coast who operate a wonderful traveling stagecoach which travels all over the country to county and state fairs and other events. I have seen them a few times, and the little shows they put on are really cool. Can't remember the name of them though.
  19. Just one tiny complaint.... At the very beginning of the show, there is a MIDI snipped of a horse? A bird? A weasel??? It sounded a bit cheezy.
  20. Oh yeah, the 2008 musical reference and the trombone glissandos. Too much of both. I don't recognize any of the snippets of whatever they are playing. Sorry this show looks stupid to me. But it will play well on the Fuze Network TV show. Right now I would say Cadets have the upper hand on enjoyable shows.
  21. Same unrecoginzable snippets of music strung together with that techno, techno quasi dub step feeling. Lots of electronics. Prolly win finals. Yeah.
  22. Kinda reminds me of Freelancers cadet-style uniforms... circa 1985. "The corps changes colors as the music changes. Enjoy". Velcro anyone?
  23. Drum majors should get a score too, maybe? No? Or maybe some type of award at shows? Think about it. They are the only "section" of a drum corps that doesn't get judged individually........
