  1. I wish I could post pics but I inherited an antique cylinder player from my grand dad and an assortment of cylinders. There's a Caruso in there somewhere, but my favorite is the one of Sousa's band playing Stars and Stripes Forever conducted by the man himself.

I used to conduct this, too, when I was 5 or 6. My band was my stuffed animals. The recording was too small to contain the march on one side, so I had to stop and flip it over to hear the "dog fight" and the ending. The bears made for a great trombone section.

Agreed...the percussion talent needed to be a championship contender has alluded Crown for many a year.

I think many on DCP have done more than just allude to the need for Crown percussion to do more.

Frankly, I think what's eluded you is how hard these members and staff work.

There’s one from finals.  It might get taken down but right now when I go to YouTube and search “Carolina Crown 2022”, it’s the first result.  Posted by Emma-Louise Carpenter.  There isn’t a lot of view of the stands but there is some.  Watching this, if it were darker in the spectator section, that would’ve helped but if you look closely, it seems there was pretty decent participation.

Thanks! Looks like she was able to copy a certain feed, so I don't expect it will stay up long. As you say, the coverage was decent, but I'm glad to see even more were participating the old fashioned way -- clapping, cheering, waving, getting on their feet, etc.

    Thanks again!

There are a couple snippets where you can see the flashing lights  in the Flomarching video that some have uploaded to YouTube but nothing I’ve seen exclusive or even substantially from the backfield.

Yep -- I've seen that one from earlier in the season. I was hoping for one taken on Finals night where hopefully more folks would know about and use the app.

It depends.  Shows start with the design team.   If the teaching staff is given a design that isn't at the level of the top corps, there's only so much room for improvement.  So all other things equal, the 2022 PC may have attracted more members with a change to seasoned teaching staff,  but i wouldn't imagine a significant change in placement.

That being said: PC now hiring program coordinator. This candidate will have a significant impact in design.   How this hiring impacts changes to the design team including visual, brass, percussion, guard, tbd.

  6. One gate open -- East Gate

Multiple lines to enter at that gate.

When we entered (around 5:15) there were about 4 Express (no bags) lines open. Those lines basically made a long "U" down toward the street and back. Probably 100 or so folks in each line.

I believe there were 3 non-Express lines. Two wrapped around the North side of LOS (towards downtown) and then towards the West Gate. As I've mentioned in other threads, the "normal" line beside the last Express line was surprisingly empty -- maybe 60 folks or less. We jumped in it and frankly forgot about anything else but our good fortune.

As in previous years, the East Gate entrance funnels folks thru the Marketplace before you get to your seats. It's also the closest gate to the ticket office.

We had those expensive "VIP" tickets (Super 3), but no special entrance for us.

Finally, we've ALWAYS been able to use the North gate to exit LOS. This is the one where the Corps equipment trucks are and where they get their group photos. I don't know when it would have been closed.

  7. We had several seat surfers in our section (139).  They all vacated peaceably when the seat holders arrived. A few MM seemed amazed these seats were all reserved.

At Semis, there was a 30ish couple seated beside me that wasn't there at Prelims. We decided to leave after Crown as we'd see the remaining Corps at Finals plus too many interruptions between performances. I asked them if they had tickets to those seats. They truthfully said no, so I told them to take ours for the rest of the evening.

    KNEW you'd chime in!

Wish me luck this season...I just aged into Vet 60 and plan to hit all three points events and see how far up the points list I get.  I'm probably not making the vet world team, tho!

    Of course.

I would be in Vet 70 (sigh!) if I still fenced. I just HATE blade repairs -- I'm no armorer.

    All the best this season!!!

    This.

To use an example from a different competitive activity...I'm a sabre fencer.  I also teach, and one thing I do on the strip -- and which i find very difficult to teach -- is the idea of "randomly" moving my blade around so my opponent doesn't quote know where I'm going to attack.  it may look random, but I know exactly where my blade is and can attack wherever I see an opening, especially is my opponent chases my blade.

Watch the first touch from this vid of a team sabre match (2017 worlds).  Hartung (on left) had no idea where Anstett (right) was going to go or when....but Anstett knew exactly what the plan was.   That takes thought and training, even though it looked entirely random. (note...France ended up winning this match 45-44...probably the greatest comeback I've ever seen...and it was only a round of 16 bout....not even quarter finals yet).

I love this!!! Fenced in college -- foil but I was an emergency stand-in for sabre when a teammate was sick. Learned a few sabre parries but mostly relied on a point attack which flummoxed more than a few opponents. Being a lefty probably helped, too.

OK -- don't want to derail the topic. Carry on.
