  1. Jim Ancona announced as Crown Front Ensemble Designer and Caption Head
  2. Mostly new people in the entire line, but significantly more talent than the past few seasons from what I understand. The center snare is the Cadets center snare from 2012 and 2013. But yeah, this video makes me really, really excited to hear the Crown percussion section this summer.
  3. Not sure what is so funny? I'm talking strictly about the brass section here, by the way. I know lots of kids who auditioned at Crown within the past 2 years and got cut, then went to Devs. Things are a lot different than they used to be.
  4. Its a very competitive brass line in terms of talent level and such. It would be a little less difficult than making Crown's line. If you can play with a great sound, have decent technique, and don't visually look like its your first day in band, you'll probably get a spot.
  5. It's under membership information, then click on 2015 staff
  6. Tony Nunez announced as Crowns pit arranger
  7. Crown didn't play that stuff in those years because they didn't have the talent. If they had, those horn books would have been much harder. Well, they had the talent in 2010 and 2011, but the talent of those lines wasn't really properly utilized.
  8. From what I understand, David Maslanka does not allow drum corps to use his music, so that would make sense. Also, I know for a fact that Bertrand Moren adores what Crown has done with his music in 2012 and 2013. And, finally, while Bernstein may have heard drum corps play his music, those who own it now absolutely HATE drum corps using it. In 2009, when like 10 corps used Bernstein's music-that was the last straw. The Bernstein Foundation now either wants A. the arrangement to be a direct transcription in order for it to be performed (essentially impossible in drum corps), or B. for the corps to pay an ABSURD amount of money in order for the music for be performed. In fact, I also know that this is the exact reason why Blast! no longer performs "Gee, Officer Krupke" or "Appalachian Spring" (Copland's music is also absurdly expensive).
  9. 2011 Cadets....not even close. Blue Devils, Cavaliers, and Crown were all cleaner. Also, 2004 Cavaliers, 2007 Blue Devils,
  10. Best: Jim Coates being hired at Carolina Crown in 2003. He took that corps from a 16th place finish in 2002 to winning 4 Jim Otts and a DCI World Championship in only 10 years with his staff hiring process and commitment to keeping good staff around for a long, long time, as well as improving the quality of life in the corps, the look of the group, the strength of the organization, etc. Without him, the Carolina Crown as we know it today would not exist.
  11. Like I said, maybe they can play with the same proficiency.....but they don't.
  12. At a guest lecture by John Cage at the Eastman School of Music back in the 1970's, the composer was taking questions from the audience. A disgruntled person in the audience proceeded to tell Cage, "ANYONE could write your music!" The composer responded by saying "Yes, but no one does" Could other corps play what Crown plays? Maybe, but no one does.
  13. Do you even know what atonal music is? BD is not playing a single atonal piece of music this year, and they also didn't play any in their 2011 production. THE RITE OF SPRING IS NOT AN ATONAL PIECE OF MUSIC.
  14. Super lame. Come join us in the 21st century, DCI.....
  15. Is this show not being broadcast on FN? I can't seem to find it....ugh.
  16. No worries, I just became suspicious when I saw "Edmond Memorial HS" in the video description. They haven't been there for almost a month. Also, that part was thankfully changed for the better. It was an extremely awkward transition (as you can see in the video) and is now much more quickly done and more effective. Kudos to Crown for recognizing this weak part of their show and fixing it early season.
  17. That video is from back in mid-June...they didn't change that part again.
  18. Dude, give it a rest. Everyone knows how much you like Crown. I'm not sure if you're a Crown parent or whatever, but as an alumnus, I can promise you that the corps does not appreciate your constant attack of other people for disagreeing with you.
  19. No, you are incorrect. Meehan is in fact the arranger. He has written like the last 4 horn books for BD.
  20. LOL. Seriously? Have you even seen Crown's show? I give up. This was obviously a troll post on your part, because anyone with ears would never say that Crown's content is "not in the same ballpark".... Also, do you even know what a chord is? Just because the Blue Devils play Mm7 chords doesn't make what they do more complicated.
  21. A couple of observations, and one thing I would really like to address among those things. Crown is definitely cleaner than BD, but both corps are still very, very dirty. I really think Crown needs to fix a couple of key moments in their show design-wise (the drill at the end of the opener is too slow and not exciting, the closer is super lame compared to the rest of the show, and the ending needs some serious work)....but I think that if they could clean it up and fix the few problems, then the championship could really be theirs for the first time ever. Percussion is still not fantastic but much better than last year, and the guard will absolutely compete with BD for the title...I think brass has the title wrapped up already. Something I want to address: Those of you who argue that what BD is doing this year is really avant-garde and such and that this is what Stravinsky would have wanted and that BD is somehow addressing Stravinsky's vision and blah blah blah and talking about the crowd rioting and such, PLEASE understand some key things about music history before you try to justify what BD is doing (for the record, I like the show, although not nearly as much as 2010 and 2012 which I thought were both brilliant): STRAVINSKY WAS A TONAL COMPOSER FOR THE MAJORITY OF HIS LIFE. The first two-thirds of the compositions he wrote were very tonal in nature(INCLUDING Rite of Spring). Yes, his use of meter and harmony was unique, but that doesn't mean that Stravinsky was trying to upset the flow of things or change music or make it into something that it wasn't. I would encourage you to listen to Petrouchka, Firebird, Symphony of Psalms, and Rite of Spring in their original form, and then please come back and try to convince me of how what BD is doing this year is in any conceivable way what Stravinsky originally envisioned. Again, love BD and their shows, but please understand that splicing very non-musical quad and snare solos over Stravinsky's work while mixing random power chords and jazz stabs in does not qualify as "artistic" or "revolutionary".
  22. Not to sound rude, but whoever on here (there have been a few) stated that BDB could make finals...after what I just saw, I'm not quite sure that is possible in any way. If they clean a lot, I could see them getting close to the top 17, but they will still probably struggle to crack the top 20.
  23. Gap may have been close but Crown has much more room for improvement over the season with that brass book and insane guard work. If they can clean up...look out, because they have the vehicle this year. Having seen BD's show now, I must say I am not nearly as impressed as I was with their 2010 and 2012 shows, which I found much more entertaining and well-designed. Only time will tell I suppose.
  24. Why are you assuming that I haven't seen the corps live? For the record, I have....several times, and all of them were full runs.
  25. Honestly, I'm with the group of people that feels that this narration during the ballad just kills the momentum of the show. Personally, the first 1/2 of the show is genius, and if the 2nd half were as good as the first half, I would be sitting here announcing Crown as the next World Champion in 2013....but if the 2nd half doesn't have some serious revisions made (i.e., narration taken out of the ballad, the stale, boring closer that doesn't match the feeling of the rest of the show, etc) then Crown may have a tough time keeping up with the Blue Devils this season.
