Marching the bones will take some significant cleaning. It works for texture. -

Hole in the snares as well. Six bass works for me. This is an improvement over last year for the Scouts. Room for growth. -

Looks like a few holes in the tubas. Good sound out of the horn line. -

Scouts are taking the field. Luv seeing the tubas pulling some Bass Bone magic. -

Colts Cadets wrote a show for the talent they possess. Only four trumpets, so the middle voices and baris are getting a bit more feature. Proof you can write to your talent. Good on this corps. -

Nice start by the pit. Small horn line with no tubas. However, giving a good effort. -

Leaving the hotel shortly to head over to Lisle. Great weekend. First, Earth, Wind & Fire at Milwaukee Summerfest; followed by celebrating with my brother's last night at the 75th Gala; finishing with a competition tonight. -

Having grown up in SE Wisconsin and attended UW-Whitewater, I can confirm this, as so many others can do. Hence, I will be carrying my full allotment of bug spray when I go back to the Midwest for the Cavaliers 75th Gala and Cavalcade over the 4th of July weekend. I remember support staff fogging the rehearsal field multiple times before and during rehearsals back in the 80s. Do I need to even mention bug juice? I can also speak to the bugs in Albany, GA when the Commandants Own performed on base. Surprising, Avon Skin-So-Soft was a popular item for my fellow Marines when we were there. This was the best insect repellent we found for both Albany and MCRD at Parris Island.

I just received the announcement on the DCA page. It looks like 2025/2025 seasons are testing the waters on a merge. https://dcacorps.org/dca-announcement-regarding-24-25-seasons

I get a reminder of Cavaliers, Bluecoats and SCV props of the late teens with this one. On a positive note, a big prop that tears down to very little air space in the trailer is a good thing. I suspect the cylinder ladders can be on an open trailer pulled by a van.

Is it just me, or are we seeing many shows this year that appear to be "Dark" based on the announcements? We have about half of the World Class announcements and many look dark. Not complaining, some of the best pieces ever written and pull at the heartstrings are the pieces that are quite dark.

The limits are "instrumentation" and the "skills" of the students. If you don't have a trumpet student that can play a double "C", then don't write for it. A "keyboard" is a "keyboard" and a "tuba" is a "tuba" that last time I checked. This gets us into the whole "Thunderous Goo" conversation that doesn't need to be rehashed. You write to what you have. If you don't have it, you adapt accordingly. I can't tell you how many times I have heard directors and arrangers say "We'll cover that missing part in the pit" as a response to the instrumentation on the field. That sounds like a cop out for someone that can't adapt to the challenge.

That would be Tragic! -
That was pretty cheesy. Someone had to say it.

Congratulations to Ginao Cipriani and David Glyde. Well-deserved for both. I had the privilege of learning from Gino both as a Brass Caption Head and a judge over the years. Joining the DCI Hall of Fame ranks in 2023 will be Gino Cipriani and David Glyde. They will be honored as part of the 2023 DCI World Championships this August in Indianapolis and as part of a virtual induction ceremony taking place Sunday, August 6. Two to be inducted into DCI Hall of Fame, Class of 2023
