  1. I know something happened back in the 1960's. A Corps at Nationals did a lot of damage to a hotel. The sponsor of the corps was contacted and told they would have to pay. The sponsor Did pay. Then SOLD all the equipment and dis-banned the Corps. So this was not a new thing.
  2. What would be nice. If no broadcast of any kind of full show. A full account here on DCP of Kevin. and maybe one camera (from Press Box) at Prelims and finals showing One Music piece done. At lest, one Photo of each Corps competing, AND Kevin's usual great post's !!!! ( for those of us that can not make it due to Health or Cost of going.
  3. 1976 I marched with the NYC Skyliners. In my 50 years it was one of my Favorites. (funny 1966, My last year in Junior Corps. I marched my OTHER best year for Memories with St. Lucy's Cadets) Interesting thing is : " St. Lucy's Cadets " - 1966 was last year in Junior Corps. a top 10 National Contender. In between I taught and assisted with a bunch of Corps across the USA. From Maine to California, Washington to Florida. Then came back to New Jersey, That was when Jimmy Hurley recruited me for the Drum line of a New Senior Corps. It was a Famous Junior Corps that was coming out as a Senior. The Blessed Sacrament Golden Knights. " Golden Knights SR Corps " - 1975 was First year in Senior Corps. They only lasted one year. " NYC Skyliners " 1976 a top 10 National/World Contender.
  4. GOOD LUCK SOUTHERN KNIGHTS. Doing those DCI shows might help with Recruiting for next year!. Being in State and all.
  5. Not sure if others were like me. BUT, when I went to the Championships. (and I was not in Finals), I would go to Prelims. From first Corps on field, to the last Corps. Then leave the next morning. That way I got to see and hear EVERYONE, and save some money and time away from home in Florida, Georgia or New Jersey.
  6. Been There, Done that with: Neptune Shoreliners, and NYC Skyliners. (Also have: Von Steuben Day, German - Polaski Day, Polish - Columbus Day, Italian - Hispanic Day, P.R., Cuba, Mex. Etc. - St. Patrick's Day, Ireland - Macy's, USA )
  7. Well I think I would word that a little different than "split". The problem at the 1966 VFW Nationals played a major part on things. The "Starting Line Sit Down", Protest at Finals and all that. Could not believe my eye's watching that at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City. ( I was with St. Lucy's Cadets that year. )
  8. No Rain yet here in Whiting/ Manchester Twp., NJ ( 10 miles south of Brick and 10 miles west of Seaside Heights, NJ )
  9. Just made me think of Newark The Drum Corps City of: Blessed Sacrament "Golden Knights" "St, Lucy's Cadets" "Woodsiders" St. Joe's (Cadets) Ironbound St, Rose of Lima "Imperial Lancers" They could hold a 5 Corps contest, and not even have one from out of town.
  10. Thank You ANDY; Memorial Day Parades have always been a big day in the Corps I was in. Specially in my childhood days in Asbury Park, NJ. (which had about 12 Parades a year.) Memorial Day Parade was almost always, The Biggest one. Then also I remember the first Contest of the year with the NYC Skyliners. May 30th in New Brunswick, NJ. (It was also Initiation day for Newbies.) We came in LAST with s 68 something. BUT. At the DCA Championships. We came in 4th with an 87. Those Were The Days MY Friend. We Thought They Would NEVER END. Alas I am 100% VA Disabled , and can no longer take part any more. I try to get to one show a year. This year my Goal is either the Grand Prix in Clifton (a stadium I marched many timed in both JR and Senior Corps shows), OR the Bayonne Tournament of Champions. It all depends on my Health, Weather, and if I can get someone to come and help my Wife and I get there and back home, To all Vets have a nice day, and REMEMBER those that did not come back. A U.S. NAVY Vietnam Veteran. Tommy
  11. Question : I know a huge amount of Corps in the past have played a song or two from " Paint Your Wagon ". It was just on TV here where I live. Would it be "Old or New" if a Corps did their Whole Show? " Paint Your Wagon " is more like an American Opera than a Broadway show. I do not think it has ever been done as a Total show. Maybe Troopers would be best, But, anyone could do it.
  12. Changing ONE letter in a name from a Great Corps of the past is NOT GOOD. ("Bellville Black Knights")
  13. THANKS JEFF!!! (Here is another "behind the scenes" note about the Hershey show.) The last time I marched this show was 1976 with the NYC Skyliners. I worked on the Corps Equipment truck. The jerk on the gate was NOT going to let it into the Stadium area. But Gene Warden the equipment Manager told them in, REAL New York City Language where to go , and how to get there.in some "very colorful language" "That ff he did not. The current ''75 DCA World Champions.. The NYC Skyliners: That if the Equipment truck did Not get in the Skyliners would Not be preforming".. Needless to say, they let us in!.
  14. This happened ONCE in DCA. A really Big show in Both FAN ATTENDANCE and QUALITY of Corps was to be in Hershey PA. a very large stadium with lots of parking. It was the same reason. Kicked them ("DCA") out just months before the show. For some Rock Band concert. It was a Senior show. (At Hershey Park an Amusement Park). I believe they even had Junior Corps some years (5 an 5 each). The big difference is DCA NEVER went back. That was back in the '70s. People to this day ask why Hersey is NOT even considered for the DCA World Championships. BUT THEY do NOT TRUST going there. Now you know. (Please, if I got something wrong. Correct me. It was a Long Time ago.)
  15. Absolutely Unbelievable!!! He was one of the best people I ever met in Corps or not. He was so very good to Nancy and I. The shock that he will not be there for, or with us. Helped me/us in so many ways. I could fill an entire page here!!!! We actually hurt just thinking of him gone from us. Cool, Calm and Informed. We know he was that way with Everyone or Things he did. He was always there for us. Even when we could no longer take part. We will miss him so much. Rest in Peace with our Love, our Friend!!! Tommy and Nancy
  16. Seems hard to believe: " Rochester Crusaders " - " Empire Statesmen " - " Rochester Phoenix " , All Gone BUT Never will be Forgotten !
  17. Not that the "Opinion" Judging of today is all that much better. (alway's think of the "French Judge at Winter Olympic's now. When the Scores are announced). BUT. I always remenber the year the Corps I was in at National's. Was in BEAT by 6 Corps above us that we BEAT, on and off all season. YES ALL SIX. There was only ONE Corps we did NOT beat at least once that year, and they WON. MAKING US 8th. From TOP 5 to mid bottom 5. Oh well, S&%+ Happens.
  18. When was the BEST? Depends on what you mean? For me. It was 1969. The year a Full concept (theme) show was done for the FIRST TIME. All Music, and Drill for Two Units. Special Uniforms for Guard. Special Flags for Guard. TWO Guard Captain's, one for each Guard. (Confederate and Union in each area.) I sat there in the stand's about 1/2 way up at 40 yard line, wondering how that was going to go over. Here at "The Dream" in Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City, NJ (Yankee Land, USA) Well at the end of their show. The place went NUTS. BOZO. CRAZY. On their feet. Yelling, Screaming, Crying in APPROVAL. As was I. Then after sitting down. I remembered. American Legion National's were in ATLANTA, GEORGIA. I wondered how will this go down "THERE" of all place's. I had a seat 2nd level, front row, on 45 yard line. Grant Field at Georgia Tech. (Remember who won the war?) Well the Y-R show got the SAME response as in Jersey City, NJ. The ONLY difference was Y-R came in 2nd at the Dream in Jersey City, and FIRST at American Legion Nationals in ATLANTA. To me. "Requiem for an Era" - THAT SHOW, that year, what they did, was one, I will always remember as the BEST.
  19. It really should be out before May 1st. So people can start putting in for summer Vacation day's. In my opinion. Most of the Corps should be able to know about how much they can afford to spend on Travel by then I would think.
  20. I was over on the You Tube area of thing's. Was looking at many of the Old things. There was a guy that said that the" BSGK Alumni " was there. That is Wrong! In 1975 the (BS) " Golden Knight's SENIOR CORPS " was there. We were judged, but I believe we were in Exhibition that day. We also Competed in the DCA Championships and held a contest that year. I would like to know if anyone has a recording or Video of the " 1975 (BS) Golden Knight's Senior Corps "? I do not remember all the shows we did. BUT, I do remember 3. Our show in Union, NJ - The '75 Dream - The '75 DCA Championships Prelim's. Kind of a neat thing. That means: I competed in The Dream in a Junior Corps.(St Lucy's Cadets) I competed in The Dream in Senior Corps.(New York City Skyliners) marched in a Corps in Exhibition.(Golden Knights Senior) AND. I attended the Dream as a FAN. All in Roosevelt Stadium, in Jersey City, NJ.
  21. A Question: Are the guard shows of today done at place's other than Gym's and large Arena's? Like would they be OK at Large Theater's. I have never been to one..
  22. Yes, Now we live in the "Age of the French Judge" (Think Olympics)
  23. Boy that is a book I would like. I sure would like to see one like that about Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City, NJ What a lot of work that would BE. (The Preview of Champions -- The Dream -- VFW Nationals -- World Open -- DCA Championships and MORE. Some time's THREE or more each year. With crowds of 20, 000 for each!!! Heck I am still in Morning of the loss.)
  24. I found the DCI show in Glens Fall's, NY because of, TV Ad's on our Local TV out of Albany, NY. Went every year I lived their (in Glens Falls area) about 5 years.)
