  1. No problem. I get that, but it involves taking risks. The people who always hate narration or vocals will not get on it though. I put myself in the camp of being open to it but i usually dont enjoy it. Meanwhile some are just turned off by any existential type show and fibe blue knights to now be boring. I personally find cavies show to be far more controversial than cadets. But i understand that the cadets naturally make shows that some roll their eyes at while others love. I get appealing to the mass audience. I think that the activity needs to appeal to the mass audience. The corps shouldn't be afraid to take risks.
  2. Eh. BD, SCV, BK, Madison, Boston, Academy, all havent performed today.
  3. I want corps to have their own identity and style. I dont need to like every show. The problem is when every show is the same, its stale.
  4. I dont have to like the vocals to like this show, i say to myself
  5. Wow. I cant believe this is crown on their first show. Going for the gold.
  6. I now have a second y chromosome with how manly that show is. But i found it enjoyable. Corny. Creative. People next to me were not fans. But in fairness we disagreed over a prior show tonight too.
  7. But then it wouldnt be a Holy Name show...
  8. Blue stars were an experience. Hopefully they work on the lady marmalade section, it wasn't well received in my theater. Overall my favorite blue stars show in some time, their stuff doesn't typically connect with me.
  9. Top notch first performance for Crossmen. Definitely expect them to be pushing for finals.
  10. I personally don't mind it. it's very, idk, post-post-modern. or meta-modern. Opting for an experience rather than a narrative. The description is supposed to help fill in the gap for the audience to understand the designer's intent. Of course a person can still enjoy a show without the description, and people are left to interpret the show as they see fit. This is why I have thoroughly enjoyed BK over the last few years. Sure, its just people walking around in funny ways on a football field playing notes and throwing things. I don't see how this is supposed to take away from how a person feels watching a well done (performed, staged, designed) show.
  11. Im really impressed with BK because of that. Ive been wanting shows to connect over years in some way thematically. This is the closest i can remember, other than corps doing the same show each year or scv doing a second phantom of the opera show but with different pieces. Scouts "drum corps fan dream part dos" was a spiritual successor to the previous show, but i don't think they went into 95 thinking they would do that show in 96. I just really want a trilogy show. To know sortof whats around the corner, but not be sure. It would be an ambitious project, somewhat pointless since each season is judged independently, but if the story is compelling i bet the audience would like it. Anyway, i feel BD would do an absurdist art show. Because they like to do shows about art. See: dada. BK does shows about experiences, and maybe they could have a show about "the absurd" but it wouldn't be an absurdist dci show.
  12. It will be an uphill battle from the start. Not only will SCV need to perform at least as good as BD from the jump, the judges need to reward it as such. Hopefully the hidden captions only helps SCV next year. This year they finished less than 2 points behind their California colleagues (they also started the season 2 points behind them), their best finish relative to them since 2013 and before that i can only imagine 99. Meanwhile the last decade BD has always responded with a win if they didn't win the year prior. I'm not saying it cant happen, but its going to be incredibly hard to win over the minds of the judges. I agree that as far as brass is concerned, SCV is finally able to compete. And they have the design talent to make a championship show.
  13. For years ive been wanting a spanish civil war show. There is a lot that i think can be done musically and visually considering that you can tell any number of stories. It was nationalistim/fascism vs republicanism/marxism, with nazi Germany supporting the former and the soviet union the latter. There is even an american brigade of volunteers called the "abraham lincoln brigade" whose story is rarely told who supported the republican side. There is a song of the brigade, jarama valley, which i think could be a great way to set the stage. If possible getting the rights to use the woodie guthrie version since his voice is so distinct. Not to mention using Picasso's famous "guernica" painting. This could even just be a picasso show for all i care, so this show idea can be accessible to the folks at BD. (joking, but also kinda serious) I think this show would fit Boston, Cavies, SCV, and Troopers really well, depending on the perspectives they take.
  14. Scv went up by half a point on finals Cavaliers and Phantom both also had score increases. In the end half the corps went up, half went down. I was at finals, i came away thinking that the cadets had a rough performance (although i enjoyed their show for the first time in... Years) i am not surprised that they went down on finals, although i didnt see their performance on Friday.
  15. I don't have much to complain about, but i whole heartedly disagree with your claim that you can compare scores in 2010 to 2016. Not only is every season different, but the judging sheets have undergone 3 changes since 2010 (2012, 2014, and 2016). Perhaps 2016 has been the most accurate year in a while when it came to scores because of the hidden captions. We are just used to having inflated scores, especially for certain corps.
  16. Not all situations involving staff loss are negative situations or full of drama. Sometimes its mutual, sometimes its because the personal life of an arranger or designer pulls them away, sometimes the corps wants to move in a new direction. When Key Poulan stopped arranging at SCV 5 years ago and Shaw came in, everyone saw it as SCV upgrading a part of their staff that was relatively weak. Poulan continued to arrange for SCVC and began arranging for the mandarins. There was no bad blood. And many times this is closer to how it goes. Its called a merry-go-round because its often a shuffle. Unless a person did something ethically wrong to get themselves fired or if they are retiring, they'll probably find work at a different corps. Arguably this could help elevate a non-g7 corps. I dont think people celebrate people losing their positions at different corps, but most corps dont retain their staff like BD. Shakeups happen. Its only "feasting" because its somewhat exciting.
  17. I only got to see Academy live once, finals. And i probably watched the DM half the time. Some might say thats bad and counter to the point of the show. The DM is there to lead, not to be the show. Drawing unnecessary attention isnt the job description. Then again its really cool. There have been DMs that i like to watch because they were just so good. 2012 was a fantastic year for that, with Vou at BAC, Cunha at SCV, and Dean at Phantom. Sometimes I focus on the guard more, sometimes i focus on the brass more, sometimes i focus on the show as a whole more. So im able to justify focusing some on the entertainment value and excellence of a great DM, considering that i don't treat all shows equally. My reply has gotten longer than i intended. I do like an entertaining DM. But if every DM is like the academy's then i think it would be a potential problem. If this is their personality, if this is a part of the show design, if this is part of who they are as leaders, then i am totally down with it. But if a DM feels they need to "outdo themselves" at the next show, or something like that, then it becomes something different. In my opinion.
  18. Crown got vis, guard, brass Scv got percussion Bloo got GE
  19. I may have missed the sarcasm in your post. Its already been stated, some people definitely are getting some satisfaction from this because they feel this is Hopkins' past catching up with him. Meanewhile just because the members had a successful season in terms of their development and such, it doesn't mean that nothing else matters for an organization. For YEA (or any group to be successful) the positive experiences from members, consistent donations (typically from alums having had a great experience) to primarily fund the activities, and a workplace environment that people want to be a part of, are all vital components and all depend on each other. Right now it seems that #3 on my list is suffering, and this stems from leadership. Because of this being a problem (assuming its true) then #2 will begin to suffer if alums are unsatisfied with the direction or leadership of the corps. And we can see how a lack of alum support and donations can hinder the ability of new members to connect with the history and tradition of a group amd having a lasting positive experience of the summer.
  20. I'll say that these people borrow ideas from each other all the time. Bluecoats really pioneered the use of electronics as it is today after years of trying shows with a heavy electronic influence. It didn't always work at first, but it got people excited and the judges warmed to their usage. But there is more to it than that. And while BD has dominated the activity we haven't seen corps do shows as artsy as them. No one has tried to out-avant-garde them. Blue knights seem to be clearly inspired by aspects of prior BD shows, but no BK show ive seen is something I would say is BD'esque. Each corps has done a good job of maintaining its identity while sortof pushing their own boundaries this season. There may be more concept shows rather than story focused, but its not like bluecoats revolutionized that type of show. Not every show has characters. Some of my favorite shows are about eliciting an emotion. There will be more concept shows because those are largely unique and diverse, rather than rehashing an old heros journey story which seems to be the basic narrative on which most DCI shows seem to be built.
