  1. I feel as though staging has been important ever since GE has been the most important judging section. Its essentially all about staging. And when i describe a show as being "well staged" i use that synonymously with having a good/great visual design. Its just how the activity is. Its been like that for a while, i would say even when Gaines was there. Staging is more than just dance inspired body movements and props. Vanguard seems to really carry the torch right now for having intricate and tight drill maneuvers, and i would also describe the show as being well staged. Crossmen had their moments this year too. I don't think its a one or the other situation. It would be nice for him to come back because the activity could use some more diversity, i suppose.
  2. I would have gone Crown Bluecoats SCV BK BD Cadets I like what i like, and i don't like what i don't like.
  3. 1. Few corps are able to maintain the consistency that corps like BD, Cadets, SCV, cavaliers have had over the last 30 years. Cavaliers are going through a rough patch, and SCV hasn't medaled in a while but have only finished out of the top 5, 5 times since their last gold. But overall the corps at the top of the activity in the 80s still are at the top, and we have seen new corps get thrown up there. 2. In a time when many corps have folded, we should be fortunate that older corps like spirit, crossmen, boston, madison, blue stars, etc. Are still active and competitive. Considering that the 90s weren't kind to spirit, im just happy they made it back from that brink. 3. This thread should be closed since OP's questions can be answered by reading the spirit thread. And its my understanding thatvwe wont know anything new (and credible) until we hear it from spirit.
  4. 1. Blue Knights 2. SCV 3. Crown 4. Colts 5. Bluecoats Just missed the cut... Boston, Crossmen, and Academy
  5. "But too many shows I see are devoid of any meaning whatsoever...and they play to the audience's head, not the heart." I wonder how you feel about the Blue Knights. Since they do the cerebral shows but also tug at the heart strings. At least mine. To be honest i found 90s drum corps to be trending towards really abstract etuff, and that bled into the 2000s. Drum corps now is much more concrete, even if designers do fall short at times. And yes, some corps do shows that remind you of a different era of dci, and they do this intentionally. Largely i find the Cadets and Madison do this, to varying levels of success. Side by Side reminds me of a show that would fit in well in the mid 90s. Power of 10 reminds me of a show that would fit in well 10 years ago. Being a student of history and philosophy, its always fun to see history as a conversation. And in dci you see these trends that are reactions to other trends. In the end it feels like we are entering a post-post-modern period in drum corps, or meta-modern if you prefer the term. Obviously some corps are doing their own thing. But its an interesting trend that we see happening, and i wonder if it will stick.
  6. Well for the Les Mis show they resisted having specific characters, i imagine they would here as well. Although i would enjoy it if the DM was referred to as el Generalisimo. I would also be interested in how a corps interprets the show. Since it doesn't have a very happy ending and the effects of the civil war and the regime still exist today in Spain.
  7. It was nominated in 2013, but was the first video game soundtrack nominated for a grammy. The soundtrack took 3 years to make too, as he wanted you (the player) to feel as though you are influencing the music as well as the game. So everyone's experience playing the game is different, even the music. I want someone to do journey. CrownPhan doesn't want BK to do it because he fears the music will be too difficult for BK to knock out of the park. But i think they are the only corps who fits the concept perfectly. And their brassline this past year was definitely a cut (or two) above prior lines.
  8. Blue Knights should do a Journey show. Dont know what Journey is? Its a video game that is as beautiful as it is emotional. Conceptually up their alley, but also it has great music to go with it. Crown should follow up Inferno with another literary inspired piece, War and Peace. Love, death, storytelling, props (but not too many) As Shia says... JUST DO IT! BD goes for 3 in a row with... A show about making music. Im not joking. After doing a show about a director that pioneered the most recent genre of film to be invented, and a show about story telling and literature, why not a show about music? Its the most gosh darned BD thing to BD since Dada. Cadets do a show about passover. Playing traditional jewish music. Why? Even years are interesting years for the cadets. We all want a sequel to 12.25 Bluecoats. Can they get more electronic than this season? Im trying to think, but i see a return to normalcy from them. In show concept not necessarily placement. Maybe theyll get political and do a blacklivesmatter show, since the bluecoats represent police and whatnot. Topical. (not an invitation for a discussion here) SCV: The Spanish Civil War. Musically there is a lot of great spanish music, feature spanish instruments. I feel the bombing at guernica could be a great emotional moment, and the picasso painting would be very impactful.
  9. Listening to the announcement i heard booing. Of course maybe the people bood directly at the microphones and those were the only booers.
  10. If this is a joke, i laughed. If youre being serious, then i am sorry to disappoint you. I wasn't a fan of Madison's production this year.
  11. To some people saying that crown puts out difficult shows means that you are a crown honk and are thus unreasonable.
  12. I do wonder what the BD members think about it all. Maybe all the haterz fuel their fire? I am not saying that i do or have bood or did boo, but its a way to gauge an audiences displeasure of a placement. It got bad enough on social media last night (people expressing their displeasure in vulgar and negative ways) that SCV had to do some serious moderation on their status because of it. Fortunately at events it just ends at booing and not berating. personally i just want to bloo the champion, but that only makes sense if the bluecoats win.
  13. What is to stop the haters from booing immediately after the BD performance? the people boo after the score, not the show. meaning they are booing because of their placement, not because they simply exist.
  14. Well initial plans to put a 100 yard by 50 yard tarp of the american flag on the field yielded criticism from the visual design head as it looked like they were trampling on the flag. Which was the opposite of what they were trying to convey.
  15. Not sure that is relevant. Maybe in 2013 as crown earned their first title over BD. It is very hard to root against the underdog. BD isn't always booed (overwhelmingly) by the fans at finals or other shows. But typically when it happens it is because the crowd feels a different show is more deserving. This year it happened to be crown that got the short end of the stick. But last year I do not remember booing despite BD kicking the butts of the competition, most were in awe of the performance and felt their title was earned. This year just felt different. and i know i am not the only one that felt that way.
  16. ive heard through the grapevine that one corps will start getting political. with the 2016 elections on the horizon, they figure they should endorse a candidate and try to make a statement. They haven't decided on who they will support (would be silly to go all in on a candidate before the primaries even begin) but word has it that they will be endorsing Trump if possible. Why trump? well this corps, who will remain nameless, has strong ties to new york. The show itself will have the president running for office, and will include several sound bytes. They will be looking for people who could act as the candidate, and are also looking for potential rand pauls and jeb bushes. The current name of the show would be "making america great again" and would no doubt have its fair share of narration.
  17. to me that just means that they are saving face by saying it is considered, but without any specific guidelines in place. And i don't think most people want just entertainment at the expense of execution, but we get down to corps that are so similar in execution. The trained and untrained ear can tell that (just for example) Cadets brass is better than the Cavaliers, who are better than the Colts, who are better than the Cascades. but in the tight groupings, like Cadets, Crown, BD, and even bluecoats, its far less clear. You put 5 different brass judges up there judging the same show, and you can very well get 5 different scores and a variety of placements. that isn't objective, its still subjective. its just instead of putting the power into the hands of the fans, you put it into the hands of an elite. The problem is when the scores are unpredictable week to week but the placements are predictable based on the panel. When they moved the semis judging panel to finals night you could (rightly) guess that BD would end up winning. Just because of the panel. i'm not saying there was a conspiracy to insure BD won by giving them a desirable panel, but it could have swung the other way with different judges, independent of the performance.
  18. DCI tried to take crowd reaction into account with the most recent judge sheets correct? So far it seems to be an "in name only" change and no tangible changes have been made.
  19. Last year the crowds i saw were enthusiastic for BD and did not boo when they won last year like this year.
