Not even running a drum corps, but I applied for an Operations position with Bluecoats back in 2021. They were offering max salary of $60,000/year, which was the exact same salary I was making at the time in my Managed Services Provider (IT) job. The corps eventually rolled the position I applied for into another position currently held by a part time member of the org and promoted them to full time.

I now make $78,000/year, so I wouldn't even consider that position now, especially now that health insurance comes through my employer and my wife has had to deal with significant health issues.

You’re better off where you’re at now. Not only does drum corps not pay well - for the few paying positions they have - I’d be concerned about job security as the longevity of the activity - and many corps - seems to be an ongoing thing.

with two of the most successful corps of all time not financially able to compete, DCI needs a come to Jesus with the powers that be for a solution.

Agreed. DCI is one major corps collapse closer to extinction. Heaven forbid BD, Bluecoats, or Crown going dark. That would be the end. Something drastically good needs to come out of this. DCI is officially on life support.

I’ve been told that almost everyone was kept in the dark about their dire situation.

This has happened so many times before. Last year it was Vanguard. Before them, it was (fill in the blanks).  Members have been stranded in the middle of the season, corps running out of food….  It’s bad news. This stuff all adds up. As a niche activity with declining scale, all hands need to be placed on deck to avoid a death spiral. As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, I hope the new director is up for the challenge.

Let me be clear and I know my comment probably seems to point fingers. I’m a fan of the Bluecoats but I think it Has to be recognized that the direction they moved the direction that others felt compelled to try to keep up with the stay relevant and competitive 2016 as a show that I really enjoy but there were a lot of things that they did that other organizations took note off and said we have to spend money and that I have enough to keep up with it

I’ll agree they won props that year. But I don’t think props and electronics are the biggest reason that brought down The Cadets and so many others before them. It’s a crazy expensive touring model, cost to house, feed, and care. Years ago, corps could do weekend shows and mini-tour for regionals. Times have changed and ships sailed long ago.  I wish there was a solid answer and remedy. But sustainability in present day DCI is next to impossible.

Here’s a hot take… I feel like there was a Rubicon that was crossed in 2016 because of the bluecoats. I like the organization of enjoy their shows but what they did in 2016 with all the extra things on the field i.e. the big skateboard ramps, and all the extra equipment they had. That stuff cost money both to purchase and carry around, they were rewarded for that but then it became. Let’s keep up with the Joneses and the activity we saw scaffolding, huge ramps, platforms, any number of things obviously the stuff has to be carried around and maintained along with all the electronics. Probably not a popular opinion, but it seem like the measuring stick changed to try to keep up with that sort of thing.

Ironic to blame the Bluecoats. Everyone know it’s always the Devils’ fault.

  6. I’m not sure there’s enough scale remaining for a regional model. Perhaps it’s time to scrap the whole DCI model altogether.

I wonder if there’s a way to tap into local school districts by creating DCI district bands - district drum corps. These corps would compete during the summer, march in parades, appear in community events and festivals. If successful, the activity may be able to grow and prosper.

How does that happen? Off the top of my head there are only 3 states with more than one drum corps. So we create 100 local corps out of thin air?

Yea. I know. That’s the challenge. Drum corps has lost the connection with communities due to the large loss of corps. World Class thumbing their collective noses over Open hasn’t helped. It’s coming down to a select few relevant corps. I hope it’s remains sustainable, but at some point it may not be.

They became Pioneer. Saw them in either 1974 or 1975 at the NT Open. I remembered they played "Hummingbird (Seals and Croft).

They were pretty solid. I recall the strange name, different uniforms and all. They looked pretty different. Of course, by today’s standards, probably would have fit right in.
