  1. Put me in coach. I'll be the judge of the future.
  2. I have a friend who just joined the corps about a week or so ago, and I'm sure he's not the only one. A week is probably not enough time to get them in, so anything they put out right now is probably very hole-y and incomplete. Not worried about them going forward. Some corps just tend to be a little slow on the get go and don't even perform full shows until mid July. I remember Academy performing a June show a few years back and scoring mid 50's and then not seeing them again until Minneapolis, where they looked fine and within striking distance of finals. It's more or less the same thing here, except in a "lower" range.
  3. Excited to finally have good video of Madison, Crossmen, Blue Stars, Colts and Troopers. And as always, hyping my team. Go Spirit!
  4. Judging from my experience seeing the people of Spirit of Atlanta, there are certainly several but not 80%. My degree is in engineering, and the horn sergeants for the past three years (at least) have been non-music majors.
  5. That guy whoever he is did a great job sounding like a real boxing announcer and a gritty coach/trainer and also matched the intensity/pace of the music, which is why that show is an example of effective narration. Mandarins this year works as well. The show is presented as a memoir of an immigrant, and the narrator sounds like an aged immigrant. The show is largely a loud and intense musical affair, and narrator sounds like George Takei in his serious/intense roles.
  6. I don't know about you but I either go big or go home. That includes my choice of casinos. Any casino I bother going to has chips at least as big as me. On a more serious note, I'm excited to finally watch this show tomorrow in full and see what the fuss is about. Interested also in seeing whether this discussion may actually be having an effect on GEV numbers, judging from the disconnect between GEV and VA numbers last night in Evansville.
  7. Confirmed on DCI.org, along with recaps. Interesting disconnect between VA and GEV judge for Crossmen.
  8. They just do. And if there's a silence gap, then there's a silence gap. Corps are well trained enough to know count structures and shouldn't be too affected by a silence gap. Not to mention there is never a good time to listen forward to something coming from pit/speakers. I can think of two shows I marched in 2011 where the power went out in the middle of our performance. Yes, something was lost without some of the effects, but we didn't let it affect our performance too much.
  9. I like both. *shrug* Well, I mean, obviously my team first and foremost, but I get and dig what BD is putting out this year.
  10. You've increased my enjoyment of this show by a lot. And it was already really high.
  11. They looks big and full. Sound great too.
  12. Alright, heard great things about the B corps this year. Let's go kids!
  13. Alright, heard great things about the B corps this year. Let's go kids!
  14. This'll be very fun when they have their closer on. Music sounds like it'll be pretty rockin'
  15. With regard to the puffy sleeves, this year and past years: See how tough and built this guy looks? And the corps is an all male corps. Ever consider that maybe THEIR ARMS ARE THAT BIG WOW LOOK AT EM GUNS Just a thought.
  16. I've had a chance to watch a 80% complete run of the show, and I'm very hyped. Things that have struck me: 1. How LOUD the hornline is this year. 2. New soloists, some who have been with the corps for a few years finally getting a chance up front, and some amazing rookies. 3. Fun musical and visual effects, especially around the 4 minutes into the show. 4. Some returning design elements that are brought about in a fresh new way. Oh, and if you get a chance to hear them perform encore/standstill tunes, there's an old favorite that's back in the rep.
  17. That's part of the design. See also the on Colts uniform this year.
  18. Take that back. I marched one season this guy and his hair is fantastic.
  19. Boston's had great shows lately, but this is the first in a while that I'm legitimately hyped for without having heard a single note.
  20. <Begin Spirit Defense Force > Get out of here dude. It's not just a lounge act, and I doubt you've heard or seen anything that would not do it for you. If you don't want to be a traitor to the South then don't do it. Hell, nobody even asked who you wanted to see out. <End Spirit Defense Force > Anyway, I'm high on Troopers making a comeback. Got some friends on that staff and I know they're doing good work to make a great drum corps even better.
  21. You're right. Carbon fiber is expensive. I'm in aviation, so it's pretty common where I'm at, and I have a very rich customer. However, it's easy and cheap to make stuff that looks like carbon fiber as a wrap for anything...phone cases, car hoods, vibe bars :ph34r:/>
  22. *puts on engineer hat* Actually, Carbon Fiber composites are quite resonant materials. We even use the resonance as a very easy way to tell whether there are any flaws or damage to the structure. When you tap it with a coin or similar, it will sound dead in the spots with damage or flaws. *puts on musician hat on top* Now, would you want to actually make marimba/vibe bars completely out of it? Probably not, because although Carbon Fiber has great strength and stiffness while still being light as hell, the impact resistance isn't there. I can't tell you how many times I have to do maintenance approvals for composite parts because somebody wasn't careful with a tool in their pocket. And when the point of a marimba/vibe bar is to be hit constantly, you'll get the dead spots all the time. *takes both off and puts on Corps Fan Hat* I like cool looking instruments, so I can't wait to see these!
