  1. This is great stuff! Very Interesting. Keep them coming.
  2. My interest in Drum Corps started when I was very young. I attended my first junior corps show in 1955. "Cavalcade of Music" sponsered by Blesssed Sacrament Golden Knights at Newark School Stadium on Sunday, June 5, 1955. Corps in the show comprised of; St. Vincent's Cadets (88.65), Holy Name Cadets (87.10), Liberty Bell Cadets (86.00), St. Joseph's Cadets (85.70), Audubon All Girls (84.95}, West Reading Police Cadets (84.45) and St. Anne's Cadets (81. 20). Of course an exhibtion by The Golden Knights and The Squires was part of the program. I vividly rermenber this contest because it was my first M&M show. All the corps were very entertaining but the one corps I especially liked and sparked my commitment were the St. Joseph's Cadets. The music and horn line were fantastic and later on I found that Hy Dreitzer arranged the music and also was the instructor. By the way, I still have the program from that event. That is why I have the scores. So what corps sparked your interest?
  3. WOW! Many "greats" associated with that corps! No wonder they sounded so good. Thanks, Andy
  4. One of the earliest corps Hy wrote for was the St. Joesph Cadets (Newark, NJ) This was the first exposure I had to Hy's arrangements. St Joe's always came "off the line" with "Madame Butterfly" intro followed with " The Battle Hymn of the Republic." Then "The Continential, Brazil, When You're Smiling, Come to Get you in a Taxi Honey, and my all time favorite A Tisket A Tasket Intro to If This Is'nt Love ." Then the closer "For All We Know, We Will Never Meet Again". The year was 1954. I was 15, This show hooked me on Hy's musical style. Of course, his later arrangements only got better and more complex. His genius showed through his fantastic writings. By the way, Tommy Swan was a soloist with St. Jos's and I think Gus Winke was too. Does anyone know who else was a part of the corps?
  5. We also played "Don't Cha Go Away Mad." (1962) I always thought it was meant to be "in the face" for the Cab's when we beat them. Which did'nt happen AT ALL that year. Some other greats: Showtime on Broadway, Sound of the City, Lullaby of Birdland, Alabama Jubilee and Melancholy Rhapsody. To name a few. It is always a feeling of pride when I think back to the days with Hy and my beloved Skyliners. I was truly blessed to be a part of this corps. Thanks Hy, Lefty, Winky and all you "other" guys!
  6. Were all the people in the audiance dino era too? NO! They were simply entertained and showed their appreciation by standing ovations. Performances which invoke these types of reactions from the fans will increase fan attendence.
  7. I agree. But this is happening with most all corps staff in the medis box. I was sitting directly below them. I think it's distasteful! None of the performers on the field could hear them anyway. Is this grandstanding?
  8. And the Rochester thing....Rochester has hosted DCA through thick and thin. The crowds come out. There is excitement and enthusiasm. The alumni corps can participate in droves (9 corps, average of 100 members plus their family and friends) and those people buy tickets. And Allen Buell has it dialed in down to every detail...including the Visitors Association that rolls out the red carpet...closes off Main Street for us, provides security at a friendly but competent level, gives us great facilities at a reasonable cost (for shows, practices and that Mini-Corps thing that is FREE because Rochester helps to make it so) and makes sure the press is there. In tough times, when no other city was committing to make DCA a partner in 2010 or 11, Rochester stepped up to the plate to pretty much save the day. Is it time for something fresh for DCA Finals? Maybe. But it isnt because Rochester was bad to us. A lot of people went a long way to insure that everyone experienced hospitality and a solid weekend. Coordinating 23 field corps,10 mini corps, judges, trucks, buses, personnel, facilities, etc is a big deal. A "thank you" once in a while shouldnt be out of reach :) I definetly agee with what you are saying. I think the soccer stadium is very good because it brings the performing corps closer to the stands. Every seat has an excellent view. I know going to Annapolis will be exciting, but the stadium is so large that corps will be quite a distance from the stands. Also I fear that lodging, parking and other amenities will be much more expensive. I for one will miss the friendly confines of Rochester in 2012.
  9. Paying dues.... Remember Rochester Phoenix ??? Excerpt from Corpsrep's history of the corps: "Members felt that political considerations were preventing them from getting the scores they deserved from DCA. They were losing to corps whom they were soundly beating in such non-DCA shows as New York State American Legion Championship."
  10. Don't forget DCI was offering to pay $25 for gas to get people to come during the last week. Desperatiion?
  11. Hope not! Donny made tremendous improvements in Pioneer's music presentation. A fan friendly show. Pioneer has the opportunity to build on this season's achievements. Hopefully players will return next year to help elevate their standing in DCI.
  12. Stop calling todays drum corps BANDS!! BANDS PLAY RECOGNIZABLE MUSIC !!!
  13. Ed, you are absolutely correct. This show is amazing. I especially like the New Orleans entrance! Donny, the whole musical score is fantastic and entertaining. The flow of the music from beginning to end keeps to the theme. Kudos to the entire staff. Percussion is great, guard is looking good, brass and pit are doing their job. Drill is coming along. Keep up the good work. You're climbing up the ladder!!!
