  2. Orange County Independent Percussion, The reining 2012 SCPA PIO Champions and WGI PIO Bronze medalists, will begin 2013 season. Write to orangecountyindependent@gmail.com for info. See us on Facebook! New website this week and audition packet to quickly follow!
  3. Gary, you sit on the Board at Kingsmen?
  4. YES! So TRUE! I WAS there for that. That DID happen! But I will say this, even today - something is wrong with the organization if kids "don't" (or more likely), won't pay there fees. Solid organizations are not out chasing members for money. The kids are on a regimented schedule to pay, the schedule is followed willingly - because the kids feel an obligation to pay on time - because they are getting a good experience and they don't see "sketchy business going on"!!! When you have to promise kids free tours because you can't get the numbers - and then try and chase them down later for money you said they didn't have to pay - your in trouble! VK has been doing this for years. I have personally witnessed this. I saw emails that threatened legal action on former members, and the members showed me their BLANK member agreements that they never filled out or signed or turned in! Bad business going on!
  5. He won't know. Only Tom and Katherine know what really happened. But I think we all know there would almost be no reason for the VK organization to "Fire" The Floats for any legitimate reason.
  6. Here is what one member had to say in a FB conversation: EAC12 wasnt VK a bunch of ########? honestly, yeah. Just really disorganized and a lot of sketchy business going on. Although Stephanie was a really good tech. EAC12 What kinda sketchy business going on? Just with financial stuff. I feel like our fees should've been drastically reduced since we didn't go on full tour. The conversation goes on, but you get the idea.
  7. Your right that we are in this for the youth, the members!! I know where you teach. Most everyone does. I certainly don't question your rep. Again brother, you will not be able to argue what has happened. Putting out specific things would not be in good taste. DCI has intervened. People have been mislead. Members and parents have been mislead. Staff has been screwed. If you personally have found a good place for yourself being involved with VK - that is awesome. Hopefully things will improve at VK. And hopefully you will not experience what some of us have been a part of and experienced first hand. I truly believe the future will tell. We will see where VK is in a couple/few years. Right? Good luck brother - all the respect!
  8. Its true Ernie: No one wants the VK to go down. No one wants the Alumni, Members or Staff to be hurt. You cannot deny, and will never win any arguement, or be able to defend what is being stated. VK is in huge financial trouble. And it is fact that DCI has intervened. I don't think anyone here (at least I'm not) trying to hurt anyone including the folks who run VK. The track record is exactly what it is. The corps has been run very poorly and it isn't going to work out, when all is said and done! Your reputation will be on the line more and more - the longer you stay involved. I know several very honorable, well respected people who have walked away from VK to ensure their own reputation is saved. (I know two Percussion people specifically who are very well respected, professional who left just because of these issues). If your fighting the good fight to save VK, other things will have to change, and several years will have to by before VK is able to gain any momentum. Just be careful bro.
  9. Well put Ernie. I agree with most of everything you said. No bashing here! But, The majority of people involved in drum corps in So Cal (and nationwide) have seen, for several years, The Velvet Knights run poorly. I'm not pointing a finger at anyone, or saying one particular person or couple, are completely responsible. But there is, without argument, many many people who have seen the shenanigans. Making sound judgement calls on not going to finals is to be commended. But, like everything else, how and when you come to those decisions makes all the difference. Look at Impulse - they have purposely not gone to finals for several years now. They are upfront with everyone from the beginning about NOT going to finals (before kids sign on and pay) and they are open with the drum corps world about why. In my opinion, an honest way of going about business. It isnt ALL of our imaginations that the person mostly responsible for the calls made at VK has not handled business the best way. I have driven a vehicle, I have helped feed the kids, I have seen first hand - and I know many others who experienced the same thing as I at VK. There have been so many great people who have tried to help VK (staff, support staff, volunteers etc) who will never put their name on the organization again. The problem is that anything done the right way now MAY be a little too late for VK. I hope not. I hope VK turns around. I hope all the Open Class corps grow stronger and reputations are rebuilt over time. Just remember - people are not naive when it comes to drum corps and VK. We are all NOT imagining what we have experienced, and seen first hand. I wish EVERYONE at VK the best and hope things are able to be turned around. But it isn't going to be easy or happen overnight.
  10. LOL!!! I was a part of VK recently. I DO know kids that marched VK 2012. They WERE told and did PAY (at least some) for a season to include finals. They backed out. VK is a mess and has been for a while. That is common knowledge here on the west coast, especially in southern Ca. I'm not here to bash on anyone. I don't know what the refund status is for the kids who DID pay their dues. Let DCI do its job and deal with VK. We all want as many corps to survive and grow strong in every sense. Even VK. We just want things to be honest, upfront, and less nonsense finger pointing. Lets all just hope that VK and all the other corps struggling will find a way to get strong. But I think we all agree - whatever is going on in some of these corps is not working (including VK) and changes need to be made.
