I totally agree with "as much as we try and paint ourselves as some high class art-form, we're still just a summer marching band sans the woodwinds. Just take a deep breath and relax". I think Michael J. Cesario said it best last year when he said that this activity plays arrangements of classical music on a football field, and a lot of times not even on an outdoor football field.

So as a fan, I live in Florida and I would like to know what Blue Devils are playing for their show - I have to hop on a plane to find this out? I live in Texas and would like to find out what Cascades are playing... I live in Seattle and would like to find out what Boston Crusaders are playing... Might be a tad bit on the impractical side...

How so? Wind ensemble music seemed to work pretty well for shows for a bulk of the 80s and 90s and still does pretty well (e.g. John Mackey). Don't a lot of the DCI audience (and members and staff) have a wind ensemble background where the music is familiar?

Not saying that - just asking where all of the "used to be " traditionally all-jazz shows and corps went (Blue Devils, Bluecoats, Crossmen (although they seem to still retain some jazz moreso than the others), etc.) - and why the disappearance.

No, I'm not really saying that - just reacting to Jeff's comment of "but stay the #### home then" (no offense, taken, of course) when trying to compare two somewhat similar situations. You don't have to worry about me being a lover of drum corps either - been around the activity for 27 years, and have gone to Finals every year since 1989 (in addition to some smaller shows each year).

Actually, in my past 27 years of seeing shows, I usually knew what each corps was playing via the pre-season DCI Today etc. preview publications, or in the last 15 years or so the Internet, or purchasing the DCI souvenir program early in the season. I do agree with you that "given how people write up their shows now, you don't know what they're playing".

Cheers...to...that...!!!

I sleep just fine at night - thanks! Perhaps then we should all start to make as many illegal copies of Madison's shows (both video and audio) and broadcast them all over the Internet and see what Madison's response would be - I'm guessing they and DCI would think it's a big deal. If a corps would willingly use a piece that they knew there would be ANY kind of rights issues with, then that is a pretty arrogant approach to take, and I would hope that there would be litigation involved. Just pick another piece! Again, this activity tends to take itself way too seriously (as evidenced above in thinking that NO other piece in the entire universe of music could EVER have had the same effect in a show - who cares about a few copyright laws along the way that might be an issue??).

All good points - jazz seems to flourish in Europe and Asia, but not in the US. Where DID the jazz drum corps shows go??
