2016 Sunrisers Brass Team Announcement
The Sunrisers announce the 2016 Brass Team!
The Sunrisers are pleased to announce that Joseph Sitler continues as Brass Caption Head for the 2016 season.
Joe is no stranger to the Sunrisers. He served as a Visual Staff Member for the Sunrisers (1994-1996) and as a Brass Technician from 1997-1998. In 2007, he was part of the brass staff that helped the Sunrisers win the DCA Class A Championship. Joe was the Program and Staff Coordinator for the Sunrisers from 2009-2012. He has been the Brass Caption Head for the Sunrisers since 2009. He was also inducted into the Sunrisers Hall of Fame in 2012.
Joe is the Band Director of the Brentwood High School “Green Machine” Marching Band. He is currently in his 20th year of teaching in the Brentwood School District. Joe was the Band Director at West Middle School from 1995-2010, and has been the Band Director of the High School Symphonic Band since 2010.
Joe has been an instructor in many areas of the marching arts. He was a Drill and Music Technician for the Brentwood High School “Green Machine” Marching Band (1989-1998), Associate Band Director (1999-2008), and has been the Director since 2009. He was also a Band Camp Instructor for the Arlington (NY) High School Marching Band (1997-2005).
Joe graduated from Long Island University C.W. Post with Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music Education (1995). He holds a Master of Arts Degree in Music Education from the Aaron Copland School of Music at CUNY Queens College (2000). Mr. Sitler also received a Master of Arts in Wind Conducting from Hofstra University (2011).
John Meyer joins us this year as a brass instructor.
John is beginning his third year with the Sunrisers. In his many years in the marching arts John has been involved both as a tech and a marching member of several drum corps throughout New York State, including Long Island Jr. Blue Jays, West Sayville Golden Eagles, DCA champion Syracuse Brigadiers, and the Rochester Crusaders.
While attending Syracuse University,John was a member of the Pride of the Orange Syracuse University Marching Band and the Sour Sitrus Society. He prides himself as being a student of some the greatest brass instructors and musicians in DCA/DCI, including Peter Blake, Donny Allen, Mike Dimeo, Dave Hamilton, Frank Ponzo, Tom Martin and Wayne Downey. John has also worked with several marching bands in the area including, Copiague, Huntington, Northern Highlands (NJ), Oswego, West Moreland, New Hartford, and Mineola.
Alyssa Rizzuto returns as brass instructor.
Alyssa is excited to be returning to the brass staff for the 2016 season a a brass instructor. She has been with the Sunrisers since 2009. From 2011-2013, she was an In-Line Brass Technician for the corps in 2014. She also held the position of Personnel Manager for the corps that year.
Alyssa is currently the 7th and 8th Grade Band Director at Howard T. Herber Middle School in the Malverne School District on Long Island. She is also the Assistant Director of the three time state champion “Pride of Malverne” Marching Band. Prior to her current position, she was the Band Director at Catherine and Count Basie Middle School in Jamaica, NY.
Alyssa holds a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Hofstra University. She is currently enrolled in the Masters Degree program at the Aaron Copland School of Music at CUNY Queens College. She also maintains a private French horn studio and performs as a freelance musician in the New York City metropolitan area. We welcome her back!
Tim Doran returns as brass instructor.
Tim Doran graduated with Bachelors of Arts in Music from Western Connecticut State University in 2005. While at Western, he was a member of the Symphonic Band and Concert Choir. He was a featured solist during Mozart’s Regina Coeli with the Concert Choir and also appeared on stage in numerous WCSU Opera productions including featured roles in The Magic Flute, Street Scene, HMS Pinafore and Amahl and the Night Visitors. In addition to his musical accomplishments at Western, he also received the Vice President of Student Affairs award for leadership and was a member of the Connecticut State University System Board of Trustees. He was also a member of Who’s Who Among America’s College and University Students from 2002-2005.
Tim’s professional experience includes working as the Administrator of Special Events and Stewardship in the Development Office at Western Connecticut State University and as the Manager of Operations and Student Life at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute in Lenox, MA. Currently, Tim is a brass instructor for the Mineola High School Marching Band in Mineola, NY and has also coached a trombone quartet at the high school. He is also an active member of the Music Ministry for Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Lindenhurst, NY.
David Abrams returns as brass instructor.
David has been working with the Long Island Sunrisers since 2008. He held positions as an In-line brass tech from 2008-2012 playing soprano and contra. In 2013, he held the Executive Director position and was happy to lead the corps back to a performance on Sunday night at DCA Championships. David received his Bachelor of Arts in music from the University of Connecticut in 2004 and his Master of Science in Music Education from Hofstra University in 2006. Currently, David maintains a private studio of low brass students ranging in age from 8-18 years old.
David has taught bands on Long Island since 2004 including the Huntington HS Blue Devil Marching Band (2004-2006), Division Avenue HS Marching Band (Director, 2007-2010), Copiague HS Marching Band (Asst. Director, 2010-2012), and most recently – the Mineola Marching Band.
Tom Lizotte continues as brass consultant. He adds this to his role of program and performance consultant for the 2016 season.
Tom has had a long and varied career in the marching arts, serving at various times as design team member, brass caption head, brass technician and consultant for Boston Crusaders, Glassmen, Colts, 27th Lancers, Cadets, North Star, Syracuse Brigadiers, Connecticut Hurricanes and Rochester Crusaders.
He is director of bands at Cape Elizabeth High School in Cape Elizabeth, ME., where he directs a program of two concert bands, three jazz ensembles and five jazz combos. He is an adjudicator for marching band and jazz and has appeared as an all-state and district conductor for festival groups in Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire.
Tom is a member of the Maine Music Educators Association Hall of Fame as well as the halls of fame of the Massachusetts Drum Corps and Music Educators and Boston Crusaders.
The Sunrisers are pleased to announce that J.D. Shaw has agreed to consult with the 2016 brass instructional staff. He also continues as brass arranger/composer for the corps.
Drum corps membership first began for Shaw at the Sky Ryders and later, he aged out at Phantom Regiment. He joined the Regiment’s brass staff in 1993 and in 2002 began his tenure as a brass arranger/composer for the corps, through the 2011 season. In 2012, he moved to his current position of brass arranger/composer for the Santa Clara Vanguard. He has written for several other DCI corps, including the Boston Crusaders and The Academy.
J.D. Shaw is Associate Professor of Horn at University of South Carolina and was formerly the French hornist with the internationally acclaimed Boston Brass where he was creative director, music arranger and co-owner of the ensemble. J.D. is an active solo artist and travels extensively throughout the United States as well as many countries in North America, Europe, and Asia. In addition, J.D. has also been a featured performer on National Public Radio’s Performance Today and the CBS Morning Show.

2016 Colorguard Team Announcement
The Sunrisers are pleased to welcome Jason Nealy to the Corps as our new Color Guard Designer/Caption Head .
Jason is originally from Stratford, CT and is currently residing in Lowell, MA. He has been involved with the color guard world for 18 years, having started his color guard career with Bunnell High School in 1996. This year marks his second year working with the Les Eclipses Independent Open colorguard. He is also working with Blessed Sacrament World and Open Class Winterguards.
His marching career includes two world championships, one with Fantasia Winterguard from Riverside, CA in 2006 and the other with the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps from Rosemont, IL in 2002. Jason has DCA experience as a member of the Bushwackers (2000-2001), the Caballeros (1999, 2014), and the Hurricanes (1998).
The Sunrisers welcome Rachel Montanez to the team as a colorguard instructor.
Rachel began her colorguard career at Mineola High School in 2008. She enjoyed four years of high school fall and winter guard, where under her captainship, she has won a NYSFBC Championship (2009) and was an A Class WGI Finalist (2011). She went on to march Independent World-Class winter guard with Alter Ego (2013) and was a World Class WGI Finalist. Rachel has also performed with many other note-worthy organizations such as, The Sunrisers (2009, 2011, 2013, 2015), The Hurricanes (2012) and The Cadets (2013 – 2015).
Rachel found an irresistible attachment to color guard at a young age and had the urge to share that passion with other young performers as soon as she graduated high school. Rachel has had the pleasure of teaching programs such as Division Avenue High School, Garden City High School, Longwood High School, and is currently in her fourth year teaching Mineola High School where she is the Color Guard Director. Rachel is looking forward to being with the Sunrisers colorguard full-time for the summer of 2016.
Lindsay Beaumont joins the team as a colorguard instructor.
Lindsay began her colorguard career at the age of 9 in a local independent group from Long Island, NY. In 2007, she joined Alter Ego Colorguard where she marched for 9 consecutive years (2007-2015). She won a WGI gold medal with Alter Ego in 2008 while she was only in 8th grade. She was a WGI world class finalist for 7 years in a row and was captain her last two years in the word class organization. She was a member of the Bushwackers Drum and Bugle Corps (2006-2008). She was then a member of the Connecticut Hurricanes (2009-2011). After six years of marching DCA, Lindsay decided to march DCI with The Cadets. She performed with The Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps for four consecutive seasons (2012-2015).
Lindsay has been involved with this activity for over a decade at only the age of 21. She goes to St. Joseph’s College and is on her way to becoming an elementary school teacher. She has grown to love the activity immensely and wants to be able to share her passion and love with other young performers and students. Lindsay has had the pleasure of teaching Sachem Marching Band (2015), The Sunrisers Drum and Bugle Corps (2015), and Mineola Winter Guard (for the upcoming season). Lindsay is truly looking forward to pursuing her career as a teacher while still being able to share her love and passion for the activity. She is excited to work with The Sunrisers again for the upcoming season.
Maria White joins the Sunrisers as a colorguard instructor.
Maria began her marching career 1988. She has built years of experience since, both marching and teaching various color guards,drum lines and and front ensembles. Some of her positions include: Front Ensemble instructor with Sunrisers and Fusion Core Drum and Bugle Corps, Brentwood HS (NY), Williamsport HS (MD) Color Guard caption head for Brentwood HS (NY) (1998 – 2011) and Malverne HS (NY) since 2014. She has been the director of Saturday Matinee Winter guard since 2010. Maria has been a guard member of several award winning organizations. She performed with Heatwave and Fusion Core Drum and Bugle Corps, Light Brigade Indoor and most recently spent the last 3 seasons performing with The Hawthorne Caballeros Drum and Bugle Corps.
Maria is a full time full time mother of 4 and happily married to Joe White who is also actively involved in the marching arts. They are both Sunriser Alumni and are thrilled to be making their return this season.
Rodney Thomas joins the Sunrisers as a colorguard consultant.
Rodney currently resides in Mount Vernon, NY. He began his colorguard career in 1995 starting in a small parade corps from his hometown. He then went on to become a member of the Alter Ego Colorguard (2002-2003) and the Light Brigade Colorguard (2004-2007 and 2009). Rodney was also a member of the Bushwackers all-age corps (2004) and a member of The Cadets (2000 and 2005) winning the DCI World Championship both years.
Rodney has taught numerous colorguards, marching bands and colorguards throughout New Jersey, Connecticut and Texas including The Bushwackers (2006-2008), Piscataway High School (2007, 2008), Bunnell High School (2008-2010), Passaic High School (2005) and Revolution Drum Corps (2009-2011). Rodney is excited to be working with the Sunrisers and we welcome him on board.
Amy Vercruysse-Jones is excited to return to the colorguard instructor of the 2016 Sunrisers.
After joining the team mid-season in 2015. Amy began her colorguard career with the Persuasion Winterguard (IA) in 1998 & 1999, then went on to march/teach with Emanon Winterguard (IA) 2000-2002 and Innuendo Winterguard (IO) 2004. She also marched with the Hawthorne Caballeros Drum & Bugle Corps beginning in 1999 through their DCA championship season in 2003. Amy has taught a variety of high school marching band and winterguard programs including Jackson Memorial HS (NJ), Urbana HS (MD), and WGI and BOA regional finalists Governor Thomas Johnson HS (MD) and Westminster HS (MD).
Outside of the activity, Amy is a graduate of The Richard Stockton College of NJ (B.S. in Speech Pathology and Audiology) and the MGH Institute of Health Professionals (Boston, MA) where she earned her Masters degree in Speech Pathology. She has previously worked at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD and is currently at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, NY where she specializes in swallowing disorders and voice restoration following laryngectomy. Amy now resides in Pleasant Valley, NY with her husband, Bobby and their puppy, Myron.
The Sunrisers are pleased to welcome Greg Lagola back to our family as a colorguard consultant.
2016 marks Greg’s 30th year as a designer and guard instructor for Drum Corps and Winter Guard. He has had the honor and privilege of working with many of the greatest talents in the activity, and is proud to be part of the world of Pageantry Arts.
Greg has served on the design staff for many organizations including; Cadets, Bluecoats, Santa Clara Vanguard, (Summer and Winter guards), Sunrisers, Emerald Marquis, and Pride of Cincinnati. He has designed guard and dance costumes for hundreds of marching bands, drum corps, winter guards and dance groups, including the Arcos Dance Company, a recent participant at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Greg has a degree in Art from the Pennsylvania State University, as well as a fashion design degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. He currently works as a freelance designer for various apparel collections, and is an adjunct faculty member at Parsons, The New School for Design. He lives in New York City with his partner Joseph La Corte, who thankfully is a color guard fan!

Sunrisers 2016 Design Team
Bobby Jones Continues with the Long Island Sunrisers as Visual Designer and Co-Program Coordinator.
Bobby is a freelance Visual Designer and Program Consultant for many high school and collegiate marching bands, winter guards, indoor percussion ensembles and drum and bugle corps throughout the country.
He has been the Visual Designer, Caption Head and as the Program Coordinator for the DCA World Champion Reading Buccaneers Drum & Bugle Corps (Reading, PA as well as the Visual Designer and Caption Head for the 2006 Crossmen Drum & Bugle Corps (Allentown, PA) and the 2007 Hawthorne Caballeros (Hawthorne, NJ). For the past four years he has been the Visual Designer for the DCI World Class Jersey Surf Drum & Bugle Corps (Mount Holly, NJ).
As well as designing, Bobby also serves as a freelance adjudicator and judge for several indoor and outdoor circuits across the country throughout the year.
Bobby lives in New York with his wife, Amy and his dachshund puppy, Myron.
Eugene O’Brien continues with the Sunrisers as co- Program Coordinator.
Gene has taught numerous award winning drum and bugle corps including the Spartans of Nashua NH, the Boston Crusaders, Connecticut Hurricanes, Rochester Crusaders, Syracuse Brigadiers, Carolina Gold, and Fusion Corps from Morristown New Jersey. Mr. O’Brien has worked on the Drum Corps International (DCI) Event Staff since 2004. He was inducted into the Massachusetts Drum Corps/ Music Educators Hall of Fame in 2012. Gene was marching member of the Rhode Island Matadors, Fitchburg Kingsmen, Boston Crusader Senior Corps, and Connecticut Hurricanes.
Gene attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and received his BS Degree in Environmental Design/Transportation Planning and minored in Music Education in 1987. He performed in the Marching Band, Symphonic Band, University Chorale, and Choral Union. He studied marching band technique with George Parks and Thomas Hannum, Instrumental conducting with Ronald Steele, Choral Conducting from Dr. Richard DuBois. Mr. O’Brien then attended the University of Massachusetts at Lowell to further study Music Education with Dr. Rosita Sands and performed with the University Concert Band under the Baton of Dan Lutz.
Performances include two Presidential Inaugurations, Statue of Liberty Dedication, Macy’s Parade, and a Montreal Canada performance. Gene has consulted numerous award winning marching bands along the East Coast. He has brought a vision to the Everett Public Schools in building one of the finest music programs in the state of Massachusetts.
Gene firmly believes in a team approach to music education with superb teachers that will inspire young students to achieve to their highest potential. Mr. O’Brien resides in Waltham Massachusetts with his wife Carol.

Kevin Murphy continues the Sunrisers as Percussion Arranger.
Kevin is an active percussion arranger and instructor for high school, college and drum and bugle corps across the United States. As a marching member, he has had an exciting and diverse drum corps career culminating as a section leader with the DCI World Champion Concord Blue Devils. Additionally, Kevin studied music education at Lebanon Valley College as an undergraduate.
As an arranger and instructor, Kevin’s creative writing style is the result of studying under well- known percussionists such as Tom Float, Paul Rennick, Tom Aungst, Dan Delong and John Oddo. Kevin has enjoyed success in the DCA arena with three consecutive high drum trophies as well as many writing, arranging, and designing credits with groups such as the Connecticut Hurricanes, Empire Statesmen, Hawthorne Caballeros and the Reading Buccaneers. In the DCI arena, he has written for, instructed, and consulted groups including the Capital Regiment, Blue Coats and Orlando Magic.

The Sunrisers welcome back to the team, Frank Mauriello. Frank continues his position as Staff Coordinator and is a member of the design team.
Frank Mauriello received his B.M. in Music Education at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University and has performed in many ensembles such as, the C.W. Post Percussion Ensemble, the C.W. Post Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band, and the C.W. Post Orchestra. Frank’s achievements include the Coordinator of Music Scholarship Award.
Frank was the assistant director and the front ensemble arranger for “Rage”, L.I.’s first Independent Indoor Marching Percussion Ensemble. In addition, he has arranged and instructed several competitive marching bands, such as Garden City High School, Roslyn High School, Eastport-South Manor High School, Seaford High School, Division Avenue High School, and the 2009 New York State Champions – Mineola High School.
Frank is the director of the Mineola High School Mustang Marching Band whose achievements have been noted throughout New York State, including performances at the Syracuse Carrier Dome in the NYSFBC Circuit and the Newsday Marching Band Festival. The Mineola Mustangs performed at Rose Hall in Lincoln Center (Jazz at Lincoln Center) for a special event presented by Turner Broadcasting (TBS) for over 500 television executives, honoring the 20th Anniversary of the Cartoon Network.
Frank’s great aspiration is to combine his range of experience with his ability to be a kind hearted, enthusiastic and intelligent teacher, who will make a positive contribution both musically and educationally.
Frank’s dedication to the advancement of the Sunrisers should be noted. He has had a steady hand in the development of this corps.
2016 Visual Team AnnouncementThe Sunrisers are pleased to announce our 2016 Visual Team.
Mike Durborow joins the Sunrisers this year as our Visual Caption Head. Mike started his marching career with the Hawthorne Muchachos (1967-1977) and held the position of Drum Major in 1977. Mike was a visual instructor for the Garfield Cadets (1979-1980).
Mike then marched with the Hawthorne Caballeros as their Drum Major (1983-1984). He was a Visual Instructor (1985-1993), Visual Caption Head (1994-2005) He was also Staff Coordinator and design team member (2002-2004).
Mike’s recent years had him with Fusion Core as Visual Caption Head and design team member (2011-2015).
Mike has written and taught many high school bands since 1975. A few are Westfield, Bernardsville, Hawthorne, Jackson Memorial, and Southern Regional to name a few.
The Sunrisers Organization welcomes Mike on board!
Joseph White, Visual Instructor,Studied Music Comp and Film at Brooklyn College and earned a degree in Media Communications from New York Institute of Technology. Joe has written music for a few films and commercials. Now doing sound mixing for movies and T.V. shows including Friends with Benefits, The Bounty Hunter, and Men in Black 3 as well as TV shows including Pan Am, The Big C and Girls. In addition to being an Emmy Nominee (Sound) for his work on Sex And The City, he is now a voting member of the Television Academy for the Emmy awards. Joe played French Horn for many years, when marching drum corps he played mellophone. He continued on to perform in the pit playing Timpani and Marimba as well. He has Marched with Bayonne Bridgemen, NY Skyliners, Crossmen, Sunrisers and Bushwackers Joe aged out of the Velvet Knights of Anaheim, CA in 1992 which was one of his favorite seasons on the field. Joe returned to Velvet Knights the following year as Visual Instructor which began his teaching career.
Joes background includes Drill Designer and Visual Instructor for many drum corps, marching bands, winter guards and drum lines including Fusion Core, NY Skyliners, Bushwackers, and the Sunrisers. He also worked with Brentwood HS Marching Band (NY), Monroe HS (NJ), Hicksville HS (NY), St. Frances Prepatory (Queens NY), Winsor Central HS (NY) and Malverne HS (NY) and Consulted with many other groups. Joe has also performed and instructed Pegasus Winter Guard as well as Saturday Matinee and Consulted with Light Brigade color guard.
Welcome to the 2016 Sunrisers, Joe!
Joe Taylor joins the Sunrisers as visual consultant/instructor. Joe has been involved with the marching arts either as a trumpet / mellophone player or instructing since 1979. During this time he has spent many years working in both the DCI and DCA arenas. He has had the opportunity to work with some great designers and instructors including: Rick Morey, Chris Calhoun, Jim Allen, Jim Steele, Jamie Thompson, Rich Templin and Wayne Downey.
No matter what group Joe was working with Brigadiers, Empire Statesmen, Fusion or Spirit of Atlanta, his passion for the activity and his strive for perfection is infectious.
Joe has been working with Victor High School’s Marching Band and Winter Percussion group for the past 11 years and has enjoyed championship seasons in NY State and recent success in the WGI, US Bands and BOA arenas.
Joe is a graduate of Nazareth College in Rochester, NY where he lives with his wife Josette and 9yr old daughter Juliana. He is employed as a Sr. Corporate Trainer and travels throughout the US and South America on the development and presentation of training material for such companies as Mercedes Benz, VW, State Farm Insurance and Microsoft.

Molly Tittler joins us as a visual instructor. Molly has been involved in the marching arts for the last 17 years. After graduating from Garden City High School as a 5 year member of the marching band, she went on to march with the Jersey Surf Drum and Bugle Corps (’03), Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps (’04 – ’05), and the Silver Medalist Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps (’06) where she played lead mellophone. She also served as a mellophone soloist for the University of Connecticut Marching Band in 2004. More recently, Ms. Tittler performed with the Fusion Drum and Bugle corps for two seasons. has taught high school marching band across Long Island and Westchester in places including Garden City, Port Chester, Levittown, Hicksville, Franklin Square, Farmingdale, and Sachem. She has also consulted for the Jersey Surf Drum and Bugle Corps and the Sunrisers Drum and Bugle Corps.
Molly was a high school band director at Hicksville High School from 2007 – 2012. At Hicksville, she ran the award winning high school Marching Band and Winterguard programs (USSBA NYS Champions 2007 – 2011, USSBA Northern States Champions 2007) as well as taught the Level V NYSSMA Majors Gold Rated Symphonic Band.
Molly is currently a band director at East Meadow High School where she conducts the ninth grade band and concert band, teaches brass sectionals, directs the colorguard, and runs the extracurricular brass ensemble, Winterguard, Tri-M Music Honor Society, and Pit orchestra.
She is a graduate of Hofstra University. Molly received her Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education with a concentration in horn performance, graduating with honors. Ms. Tittler also holds a Master of Arts degree in Wind Conducting. During her graduate studies at Hofstra, she served as the Graduate Conducting Associate to Dr. Peter Loel Boonshaft from 2010-2012, for which she conducted both the Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band.
Molly maintains a private brass studio; many of her students have received county and state honors. She is an active member of the Nassau Music Educators Association where she has served as an All County chairperson several times, and currently serves as the Corresponding Secretary on the executive board. She is also a member of the New York State School Music Association, for which she is a certified brass adjudicator.

Bill Woodruff is excited to be returning to the Sunrisers as a visual instructor. Bill marched at Sacred Heart University as a Tuba Player (1998-2002) and 3 years with the Bushwackers (2005-2007) before joining the Sunrisers visual staff as a tech in 2009. Since then he has marched with the Bridgemen Alumni (2010) and for the last 2 years worked with Fusion Core (2014-2015) as a member of their visual Team. Welcome back to the Sunrisers, Bill !
Krissy McMullen joins the Sunrisers as a visual instructor. Krissy marched with the Reading Buccaneers as a french horn player (1983-1986). She returned to the Buccaneers again (2007-2012) as a member marching Mellophone.
Krissy’s teaching includes groups such as Lower Dauphin High School, Lancaster Catholic High School, and Fusion Core as a mid season visual tech. Krissy has been a field visual judge for six years with Cavalcade of Bands. Welcome to the team, Krissy!
Paul Williams returns to the Sunrisers as a visual instructor. Paul started his drum corps career as a baritone in the Enfield Centurions (1965-1974). After aging out, he marched with the Sunrisers (1974-1979). Paul worked with the Woonsocket, RI winter guard (1980-1982).
Paul then took time to raise his family before returning to the Sunrisers as a visual instructor (2013-2015). We welcome Paul back to the staff for 2016!

2015 Sunrisers Show Announcement - “COME FLY WITH ME”
How would you respond if someone said, “You can travel the world for the price of a seat at a drum corps contest?”
That is the option available to those who will see the Long Island Sunrisers in 2015. The journey is called “Come Fly With Me.”
“When we sat down to map out the course of the corps, we wanted to choose a show that was audience-friendly, artistic and true to the identity of the Sunrisers,” program coordinator Gene O’Brien states. “Many routes were open to us, but this one really excited the staff as being a Sunrisers production, with a twist.”
“The concept was chosen because the staff felt that a travelogue would present excellent opportunities visually combined with a limitless array of music,”O’Brien states.
“During a conference call in the early fall, one participant said that the concept reminded him of an iconic Frank Sinatra travelogue concept album from the 1950s ‘Come Fly With Me’. JD Shaw, our brass arranger, thought that tune would be a perfect launching pad for this international journey.”
The show opening evolved into a flight from New York’s JFK Airport to Europe. Keep your eye on the Sunrisers color guard this year, led by Nick Ashley and Budd Williams as they take us on this visual journey with the first stop being Spain. “The paso doble is a great Spanish dance form, so Alfred Reed’s ‘El Camino Real’ seemed a perfect choice,”O’Brien said. “This is music with lots of fire and drive. What really excites me is the opportunity for the front ensemble and brass to engage in a conversation. Organic design is important to us,”he states.
From Spain, the Sunrisers will bring the audience to Italy. “So many pieces could fit this bill, but JD gravitated to Mascagni’s ‘Cavalleria Rusticana.’ This was an excellent selection, because it is such a great tune that has so far flown under the drum corps radar. It is so difficult to find material that hasn’t been picked over by drum corps, but this piece is a gem,’ O’Brien says.
The Sunrisers entourage then travels to India, in which the percussion features within “Jai Ho” from the hit movie franchise “Slumdog Millionaire.” This film is the Indian version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.” states O’Brien: “This is a great opportunity for us to explore ethnic percussion. Kevin Murphy, our new percussion writer and caption head, presented this material and is very excited about producing it for the field. We are equally excited.”
The journey so far has been fun, but the Sunrisers are working their way back to the mainland. France, in the form of “Marseilles” is the conclusion of the European trek and springboard for the return to the mainland.
Staff coordinator, Frank Mauriello states, “We as a staff are extremely excited about this upcoming season and it is one of the most anticipated seasons to date for the Sunrisers. We have assembled one of the most experienced rosters of staff that we have ever had, with JD Shaw, Bobby Jones, and Kevin Murphy taking the lead on the design team.”
The design team and instructional staff have many years of experience and knowledge coming from all over the drum corps landscape; ranging from The Santa Clara Vanguard, The Cadets, The Blue Devils, The Blue Stars, Syracuse Brigadiers, Reading Buccaneers, and Phantom Regiment and more.
Frank Mauriello continues, “Obviously, this top notch team is no stranger to success and we’re looking forward to having them share their wealth of knowledge with our members, as well as help the Sunrisers soar to new heights in their 2015 production, ‘Come Fly With Me.’”

Tom Lizotte Appointed Program and Performance consultant - Tom has had a long and varied career in the marching arts, serving at various times as design team member, brass caption head, brass technician and consultant for Boston Crusaders, Glassmen, Colts, 27th Lancers, Cadets, North Star, Syracuse Brigadiers, Connecticut Hurricanes and Rochester Crusaders.
He is director of bands at Cape Elizabeth High School in Cape Elizabeth, ME., where he directs a program of two concert bands, three jazz ensembles and five jazz combos. He is an adjudicator for marching band and jazz and has appeared as an all-state and district conductor for festival groups in Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire.
Tom is a member of the Maine Music Educators Association Hall of Fame as well as the halls of fame of the Massachusetts Drum Corps and Music Educators and Boston Crusaders.
“We are ecstatic to have TL as part of the 2015 Sunriser team,” program coordinator Gene O’Brien said. “Since our initial association with the Boston Crusaders when he was caption head, we have done many successful projects. He has proved to be a great sounding board for me in a number of venues, and his expertise in programming will help us greatly as we seek to preserve the Sunriser identity while moving the corps forward.”
“I’m very happy to be part of the Sunriser tradition,” Lizotte stated. “Gene and I think in similar ways creatively and believe the basis to any meaningful musical organization lies in providing the members with the best possible literature. We want musicians to come to Sun because they realize they will be playing great literature well.”
“I am also very pleased to have the chance to work with JD Shaw again. In 1999, the first year Boston made DCI finals, JD wrote the brass book, and that season was a great ride for us all. Since then he has done so many great things and it will be an honor and pleasure to work with his music again,” Lizotte said.
In addition to Tom, the Corps is pleased to announce that Bob Vitti will be continuing as a program consultant for the 2015 season. Bob joins the team with a wealth of knowledge!
Robert C. Vitti began his career in the Port Chester Public School System in the 1980’s as a music instructor. He later moved up to Assistant Director and then for the past 20 years has been Director of Bands at Port Chester High School. His tenure as Director includes direct responsibility for the High School Concert and Jazz Bands along with the infamous (“Pride of Port Chester”) High School Marching Band.
Under his direction the Marching Band has achieved a prestigious reputation both locally and nationally. The Band captured several State championship titles during its many competition seasons including Best Percussion, Best Color Guard and Best Overall Band. The Band also participated in many special events such as a performance at the Orange Bowl Football half time show, marching in the Spetro Magic Parade at Walt Disney World and appearing In two major motion pictures, the remake of Miracle on 34th Street and Spiderman 3.
Mr. Vitti has been involved with music marching activity for several decades, both as a participant and a teacher. He began his performance career as a percussionist in the 1960’s as a member of the Greenwich Boys Club Drum and Bugle Corps, the Byram, CT Stateliners and the Hawthorne Muchachos.
He was the Percussion Coordinator for the 5 time DCA World Champion Brigadiers and served as Caption Head of the Brigs percussion from 2000-2003. He also served as the Sunrisers program coordinator for the past two seasons. Mr. Vitti has been active as a teacher and percussion arranger for both Junior and All-Age Corps including various Division II and III Corps in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusettes.
He was also on staff as Percussion Specialist for the Sky Riders from Kansas, the Bridgemen from New Jersey, the NY Skyliners, the Connecticut Hurricanes, the Westchester Brassmen and the Sunrisers.

9/19/2014In continuing our announcement of key staff, the Sunrisers are pleased to announce that Eugene O'Brien has taken on the role of Program Coordinator.
Gene has taught numerous award winning drum and bugle corps including the Spartans of Nashua NH, the Boston Crusaders, Connecticut Hurricanes, Rochester Crusaders, Syracuse Brigadiers, Carolina Gold, Fusion Corps from Morristown New Jersey. Mr. O’Brien worked on the Drum Corps International Event Staff since 2004. He was inducted into the Massachusetts Drum Corps/ Music Educators Hall of Fame in 2012. Gene was marching member of the Rhode Island Matadors, Fitchburg Kingsmen, Boston Crusader Senior Corps, Connecticut Hurricanes.
Gene attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and received his BS Degree in Environmental Design/Transportation Planning and minored in Music Education in 1987. He performed in the Marching Band, Symphonic Band, University Chorale, and Choral Union. He studied marching band technique with George Parks and Thomas Hannum, Instrumental conducting with Ronald Steele, Choral Conducting from Dr. Richard DuBois. Mr. O’Brien then went to the University of Massachusetts at Lowell to further study Music Education with Dr. Rosita Sands and performed with the University Concert Band under the Baton of Dan Lutz.
Performances include two Presidential Inaugurations, Statue of Liberty Dedication, Macys Parade,Montreal Canada. Gene has consulted numerous award winning marching bands along the East Coast. He has brought a vision to the Everett Public Schools to assist to build one of the finest music programs in the state of Massachusetts.
Gene firmly believes in a team approach to music education with superb teachers that will inspire young students to achieve to their highest potential. Mr. O’Brien resides in Waltham Massachusetts with his wife Carol. Please join the Sunrisers as we welcome Gene on board with his new role!
The Sunrisers welcome back to the team, Frank Mauriello. Frank continues his position as Staff Coordinator.
Frank Mauriello received his B.M. in Music Education at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University and has performed in many ensembles such as, the C.W. Post Percussion Ensemble, the C.W. Post Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band, and the C.W. Post Orchestra. Frank achievements include the Coordinator of Music Scholarship Award.
Frank was the assistant director and the front ensemble arranger for “Rage”, L.I.’s first Independent Indoor Marching Percussion Ensemble. In addition, he has arranged and instructed several competitive marching bands, such as Garden City High School, Roslyn High School, Eastport-South Manor High School, Seaford High School, Division Avenue High School, and the 2009 New York State Champions – Mineola High School.
Frank is the director of the Mineola High School Mustang Marching Band whose achievements have been noted throughout New York State, including performances at the Syracuse Carrier Dome in the NYSFBC Circuit and the Newsday Marching Band Festival. The Mineola Mustangs performed at Rose Hall in Lincoln Center (Jazz at Lincoln Center) for a special event put on by Turner Broadcasting (TBS) for over 500 television executives, honoring the 20th Anniversary of the Cartoon Network.
Frank’s great aspiration is to combine his range of experience with his ability to be a kindhearted, enthusiastic and intelligent teacher, who will make a positive contribution both musically and educationally.
Frank's dedication to the advancement of the Sunrisers should be noted. He has had a steady hand in the development of this corps.

SUNRISERS PRESS RELEASE
9/19/2014The Sunrisers are pleased to announce that J.D. Shaw has agreed to become the brass arranger/composer for the corps.
"I am extremely excited to be part of the new direction of the Sunrisers. Working with a corps rich in tradition and history is always a pleasure and I am eager with anticipation to create entertaining productions with this talented design team," states Shaw.
Drum corps membership first began for Shaw at the Sky Ryders and later, he aged out at Phantom Regiment. He joined the Regiment's brass staff in 1993 and in 2002 began his tenure as a brass arranger/composer for the corps, through the 2011 season. In 2012, he moved to his current position of brass arranger/composer for the Santa Clara Vanguard. He has written for several other DCI corps, including the Boston Crusaders and The Academy.
“I am excited to add a great arranger such as J.D. Shaw to the Sunriser family as we continue our path of growth as a competitor in DCA.” states executive director, Larry Visconti.
J.D. Shaw is Associate Professor of Horn at University of South Carolina and was formerly the French hornist with the internationally acclaimed Boston Brass where he was creative director, music arranger and co-owner of the ensemble. J.D. is an active solo artist and travels extensively throughout the United States as well as many countries in North America, Europe, and Asia. In addition, J.D. has also been a featured performer on National Public Radio's Performance Today and the CBS Morning Show.

The Sunrisers are proud to welcome Anthony DeMarino to the creative team for the 2013 season as Artistic Director. Anthony been active in the marching arts activity as a performer and designer for over 25 years.
He been a performing member of The Cavaliers, The Imperial Knights, The Caballeros, The Reading Buccaneers and he is also Alumni, having performed with the Sunriser's DCA Championship color guard in 1997-1999. As a performer Anthony has earned a WGI Gold Medal and has been named a DCI Finalist and a DCA World Champion.
Anthony is also the designer of many successful color guard programs over the years. Most recently, he created the Mineola High School winter guard program and for the past 12 years he has nurtured that program to become a 5-time WGI top-25 color guard and a 2011 WGI Scholastic A Class Finalist. Anthony is also currently a visual consultant for 2012 WGI Scholastic World Class Champions, Flanagan High School. He has also recently consulted for the WGI Open Class Medalist, West Orange HS winter guard.
We are thrilled to welcome him to the team.

The Sunrisers will continue their "Drive for 55" horns at rehearsal this coming Saturday, Jan. 19 to be held at the Brentwood High School's Sonderling Building, 2 Sixth Avenue. Rehearsal time will be 10:00am until 6pm. The corps will continue to learn music for their 2013 Show " A Western Fantasy".

The Long Island Sunrisers are very proud and excited to announce our percussion team for the 2016 season. This year's program will surely be dramatically influenced by the talent and experience of the individuals designing and instructing our battery and front ensemble.
