Guardians partner with Identity Winterguard to found a new nonprofit organization "Independent Creative Arts Network" or "iCAN" Over the past year, Johnathan Doerr, director of the Guardians Drum and Bugle Corps, and Jaime Martinez, director of Identity Winterguard, have been steadily working on forming a new nonprofit organization in Central Texas that will serve as a beacon for the visual and performing arts in the region. This effort has been in the making for many months as the pair began searching for a trustworthy and business-minded board of directors. After many months of hard work and planning, the new organization “Independent Creative Arts Network” or “iCAN” has been formed. The Guardians are in their second year of operation, first year of affiliation with Open Class pending their evaluation. The Guardians have settled themselves in the diverse town of Seguin, TX. This decision has been very beneficial to the Guardians. Local businesses and other nonprofits in the area have gathered behind Guardians and helped establish funding sources, such as bingo, in the area as well as help supply Guardians with housing and volunteer manpower. “The collaborative efforts of Identity and Guardians have been very exciting. I firmly believe that we are moving towards a bright future as we look to further the longevity of both groups,” says the director of the Guardians, Johnathan Doerr. “Jaime has become a great friend of mine as well as a wise mentor. Jaime and the Identity organization has a vision for iCAN that is in accord with my own, and I couldn’t think of a better individual or organization to work with to establish this new nonprofit business.” 2014 marks the 7th season of Identity and their winter programs. Identity is a 2013 Independent A Class Finalist and the 2013 Independent Open World Champions. As champions, Identity's top team has been promoted to WGI's World Class designation. Jaime Martinez, director for Identity, had this to say about the new partnership. "With our continued tradition of excellence, the search was on to build a relationship with a like-minded organization to help bring Identity to a more secure financial situation. Having the same competitive goals was important, but more important was teaming with a group that is professional, educational, and has the same organizational goals. Johnathan Doerr and the Guardians have shown to be that organization and we are excited to grow together." Guardians and Identity have both seen success throughout this time of economic stress and believe that merging the organizations under the new nonprofit business will yield very positive results. Each organization is an asset to their area and has connections that will push each other towards a future of longevity, successful business practices, and most importantly, a truly superior visual and performing arts experience. Corps Director, Johnathan Doerr, is ecstatic for everything that has been happening behind the scenes with Guardians as they prepare for open class. Watch out for the Guardians this summer as they request to go on a southern tour under Drum Corps International's "open class" division. Doerr feels that the Guardians have an all star staff that looks to boost the Guardians' performance level to a whole new level. 13. Just an update... We are at 182 subscribers! That will get us about $6,800! Can we get it up to 200? Johnathan Doerr Corps Director www.guardiansdbc.org
  14. I appreciate the kind words and can see your concerns! We looked at the range of ages that typically donate to drum corps, and asked ourselves what age ranges donate the most and which donate the least. How can we get the ranges that donate the least to start donating? We found that the range of 14-21 is practically, for obvious reasons, almost non-existent. This allows the new generation of tech savvy youth to "donate" to a corps without actually spending any money. This also appeals to any age range, because it is so simple and free. All ads you receive are family friendly, guaranteed. These companies must be approved by iText and be appropriate for audiences ages 13 and up. I'm unsure if you're an Alabama Football Fan, but the Alabama Football team uses this fundraising method at their football games, endorsed by Nick Saban. I'm sure that should put some credibility on this program. More information can be found at http://www.i-texts.com/ I mean, one of the banners on the home page is of a baby holding a phone. That has to show you how these ads are geared towards families. Johnathan Doerr Corps Director www.guardiansdbc.org

  16. Hello all! YOU can help purchase the Guardians Drum and Bugle Corps their own hornline by simply texting "gdbc" as well as your email and zip code to 70000. This is a FREE way to support the drum corps activity and help a rising corps! You simply receive NO MORE than three texts a day between 8 AM and 5 PM and we get donations from the companies that send you these texts. These companies do NOT have the ability to personally see your phone number and can not sell your information. They send an ad to a list serve that shoots out the ads to people they are targeting in a designated zip code. Once again, the company never sees your phone number and it does NOT get sold to other companies. You will not receive more than three texts per day. This past season, the Guardians rented horns from all-age drum corps, the Vigilantes, as well as World Class Corps, the Crossmen. We would like to stray away from dependence on others and make the move to purchase our own hornline. The Guardians have been a part of a new system called "iText" that is very simple and a free way to help us reach this goal. If we get 1,700 subscribers by the end of the year, we will earn $4,250 a month continuously. At the end of the next year, we will have $51,000 to pay off our purchase of a used Jupiter hornline! This will help us establish a constant and sustainable cash flow. This is money that is generated every year, not just a one time payment So I ask you to please consider helping us purchase our hornline AS WELL as establish a sustainable cash flow by simply following the instructions above, and text "gdbc" as well as your email and zip code to 70000. If we reach 150 subscribers, we will fully pay off our drum head/stick budget for 2014. If we reach 400 subscribers, we will fully pay off the purchase of our drumline for 2014. If we reach 600 subscribers, we will fully pay off our food bill for 2014. If we reach 1,000 subscribers, we will fully pay off our bus bill for 2014. If we reach 1,200 subscribers, we will fully pay off the purchase of our uniforms. If we reach 1,500 subscribers, we will fully pay off the purchase of our front ensemble. If we reach 1,700 subscribers, we will fully pay off the purchase of our hornline. If we reach 5,100 subscribers, we will fully pay off our ENTIRE 2014 operating budget!!!!! Thank you for your continued support of the activity. Thank you for helping us take a step towards longevity. Johnathan Doerr Corps Director www.guardiansdbc.org
  17. We have tried to start in the most budget friendly fashion. The uniforms did indeed come from Cedar Park High School from a connection I have with their assistant director. We maintain a very strong relationship with the larger schools of Austin (Cedar Park, Round Rock, Lake Travis, Westwood, Dripping Springs, Pflugerville, Hays) and the San Antonio area (Johnson, Madison, MacArthur, Seguin, Texas State University), which has gotten us very far in terms of recruitment of not only students, but staff members as well. 18. I tried to stay away from this post, but I felt like something had to be clarified in the above statement. We've accomplished so much, and I can proudly say that it wasn't by my doing. These 50 faithful kids came out and showed the world that drum corps doesn't have to start at a nationally touring level to be successful. I didn't start a drum corps. I didn't make this happen. These faithful 50 took the leap and came together from as far as Kansas to form the Guardians. They were the ones who "did it." I'd love to thank Debbie Wilkinson for being an amazing corps volunteer as usual, Fred Morrison and the Crossmen for having the Guardians come out and perform their very first show at the Crossmen's MMX and allowing the use of their podium and instruments, Chris Magonigal and the Genesis team for bringing up the amazing G-Unit to compete against the Guardians Drumline (congrats!) and being a great representative of the activity, the Holubec and Rocka families for volunteering, Laura Dinkel for fitting the uniforms, Steve Wessels for selling us these fantastic uniforms, the Boys and Girls Club of America for partnering with us to supply us housing and join in on their bingo operations, Philip Flynn, Matthew Garrison, Michael Oreka, Christopher Montemayor, and Alycia Mendoza for teaching like madmen this weekend, and my wonderful family for everything they have put into this. There are so many more people to thank. I wish I could list them all. Just know that because of your time and effort, Guardians were able to successfully make their debut! I can't thank you all enough! The drum corps community and Drum Corps International has been very supportive of what we've accomplished so far and we look forward to growing and moving further into the right direction this season and in future years. Oh and Stu, the lollipops are delicious here. Johnathan Doerr Corps Director
