  1. OK, this may be a little late to the game, but...at the beginning of BK's high speed closer, when they have the square in the center of the field, and then do a modified Z-pull for lack of a better word. The arms of the "Z" are curved, with the center of it spinning...If you look at it from above it looks like the hurricane symbol that the Weather Channel uses, with the center part spinning, just like the eye of a hurricane... OK, ok, maybe I read to much into it...but still! With that in mind, all thoughts go out to those impacted by the hurricane in south east Texas...
  2. BK - 33 age outs - 8 guard, 10 percussion/fe, 15 brass - 1 trumpet, 8 mellos, 6 low brass (easily done by each section having different eye colors on their uniforms in the age out pic!)
  3. $10 for prelims and semis, $20 for finals (of course this may change from year to year). Parking is pretty easy to find close to the stadium for the first two days. For finals night, we usually park early, and then walk downtown to get dinner.
  4. I counted 60 for PR during Oceanside, and confirmed it on Flo...I did try to account for holes that were apparent.
  5. BK also won the show in the first week of the season at Sacramento - Moonlight Classic. Beat PR by 2 points there.
  6. BK 86.400 PR 85.450 Mandarins 81.650 Academy 80.850 Troopers 77.750 Genesis 71.900

  8. And no amplification other than soloists (brass/battery)...
  9. I just came back from volunteering with them, and what an experience. The mm's are so into that show. Their best performance this past week was the Houston TOC show. They came out on fire after the rain delay. It would have been so easy to lose the energy going into a delayed start. There were a few hiccups on Saturday - electronics on snare solo and mellophone solo. One or two over enthusiastic members coming in a quarter beat too soon in Hide and Seek. Still, a solid performance. The staff there are awesome. Sure they criticize when it is needed, but I have never heard so many compliments to the members, followed by instruction on how to make it even better. It is such a positive but challenging environment to grow as a performer. To be honest, I wonder if the judges, particularly the guard judge(s), are not sure what to do with them in some cases. Brass line members are spinning flags and have choreography that is more guard like than most corps. Although I did hear (second/third hand - grain of salt) that a visual judge this past week indicated they were not doing ENOUGH choreography! Like I said, grain of salt, but I heard it from multiple mm's. I know there are changes coming. That being said, I love this show (and not just because my daughter is aging out there). Every year one show sticks with me, and this is it. Can't wait to see where it goes! Going to be tough using Flo Marching between now and Indy...
  10. That may be the way it turns out. I went to all three SoCal shows, and was impressed by all the corps. But, my opinion was that the west coast tour was being underscored a bit. The only little piece of evidence to support this is the jump by SCV when they were then going against Bluecoats on a nightly basis. I did see (Flomarching) several east coast shows and only Crown really came through and gave me anything that I thought was comparable to BD and SCV. Like many people on here say, look at spreads and not raw scores until they are on the same field. That is why I am looking forward to that head to head comparison! Edit - I have not seen Bluecoats, but will see them at DATR
  11. Anyone else looking forward to when BK, BAC, and The Cadets all get on the field at the same time? Personally, I think the race between 6-8 is almost as interesting as the top 3!
  12. Might be more of an electronic effect, but the pitch bend by the Bluecoats in "Tilt" got a standing "O" each night in Indy...I am sure there are still people who think the brass line did that.
  13. I went to all three SoCal shows, and BK was by far the loudest unamplified corps at Oceanside. In the Rose Bowl and at Riverside, another corps which will remain nameless "turned the volume up to 11." I must admit, it is disappointing when you hear something cool in the brass, and you turn to look to see where it is coming from, and you see a speaker. Get rid of the 5//7/9 mics across the field. Mic soloists, mic small ensembles up to 8 - that is about 10% of the brass line in any corps...any number greater than that should be able to hold their own.
