  1. Ssshush! You'll give corps management ideas. At 5K per marching tuba x 20 tubas that would be a savings of $100,000! Nothing to laugh at. Especially since several corps already "double-down" or 're-inforce" the sound via their synthesizers. It's not like we have seen any accidents or fires with the synthesizers... ...or have we?
  2. I believe Granny replicated a thread already posted by Chuck H earlier. http://www.drumcorpsplanet.com/forums/index.php/topic/158060-just-look-at-what-weve-done/ Did not Spirit have one in Indy this year? Even without the "drinking." Your question evokes memories of the Cadets years back at Whitewater attempting that Zingali ending. You mentioned Crown '12 and I hope that Mr. Brannen is still continuing to heal and improve. Wasn't he a podium prince at one point this season?
  3. For the record, I am not the one who red negged Boo. I agree with your character assessment that he is certainly a character. I was obliquely hinting at his annual cross pond venturing to get some fresh Chinese food. I'm guessing his birthday card monies recently gets him the seat he deserves. Seriously though, you bring up some great anecdotes to which I also have witnessed at Ham Fam as well as Yocco's in Allentown and at Shapiro's in Indy (the great Jewish deli just south of LOS.) Unfortunately by the time of Indy, some corps stop feeding their kids once the unit's last performance is done. Many times we've been part of those who shared snacks and treats with the Open Class and lower tier World Class marchers who were getting back home hungry, tired, and poor but ready to dream of the next season's growth. Kudos to all who have been so generous as sponsors for full tour, some tour, camps, transportation or refugge status.
  4. DCI FB page yesterday had a photo of the Crossmen choir that played at the game. Nice shot too. But hey, get a new name! "Rangers" are already taken by the second best hockey team, an original 6, in the NYC metro area. Go Islanders!, Go Mets! Next year we'll get them.
  5. I am no mechanical genius and not by any way an expert on every corps, but I do share some experience including the bumps. Michael Boo (above) evidently only relates to the elite class in World class as a good number of the participants live no where near major airports; often it is cheaper to car pool a number of members and drive, even at $4 a gallon to get to the corps assembling point. And there are still a number of MMs who hitch a ride home with their own corps busses or bivouac with other corps busses to get home from Indy back to where cars may be parked. As less corps own their own busses today, that isn't happening as often as the past; but it is still happening. It also happens with kids trying to get to Dayton and Cincinnati airports where many flights home are available and cheaper than the mobs that cram Indy airport on Sunday after finals. (I already tried to get my frequent flier points for a free ticket to and from Indy; no luck; they are already all gone unless one wants to cash in all the points for a few first class seats. I'll leave those to the likes of Boo.) The other problem is that in the world of today's corps, Spring training and tour is usually a total of 10 weeks, meaning that someone will probably have to check the car and start it a few times over the summer so that it doesn't go dead. I have known of a number of MMs who have sold their cars totally, or at least for the summer in order to pay tour fees. That's drum corps in 2014
  6. you are absolutely correct!! I used one of my nicknames for him and lost the real name in the retelling. Opie gave a lot of life to the corps on and off the field.
  7. Be patient Michael! This is taken from the Scouts website: "Auction proceeds must be presented within 7 days of the announced winner or the next highest bidder will be awarded the painting. Upon valuation, an donation tax-letter will be provided to the winning bidder. “I expect the painting auction will raise several thousand dollars for the corps and I’m excited to see the bidding begin,” stated Komnick. The painting is 24″ high by 36″ wide and is oil and acrylic on canvas. It can be picked up the banquet or it will be professionally shipped. In addition to the original painting, the Madison Scouts have produced 100 limited edition reproductions of the painting that will be numbered and hand-signed by Jeff Koehn. These limited edition Giclée prints of “Corps of Brothers” were produced with state-of-the-art digital technology on fine-art archival Hahnemuhle Photo Rag paper by Schumann Studio. The prints are guaranteed for a lifetime of beauty and vibrancy. Identically sized to the painting (24″x36″), they are available for $250 each. They can be purchased via online or at the 75th Anniversary Celebration." So that would be at least 250x100= 25,000 PLUS the auction of the original. Nice going Jeff! This is the second corps painting I know he has done as he also did one of the Cavaliers for their anniversary with Don Warren. That was great too. The guy has a real gift.
  8. Reblogged from iwhaleventually (Source: iwhaleventually, via marchingbandkids)
  9. 3. Glad to hear that Greg is now better. 2. Perhaps in the 80 years of the corps the term was not used in your few years with them. Definitely the term is used back in Zingali's days and now by the current membership, particularly since 2009, the 75th anniversary year when a lot of old traditions were rediscovered deliberately by some of the membership. The tapping of the buckles is an example. 1. Yup, Sully it is ......Mark Sylvester for those who don't know his a/k/a.
  10. Maybe a little jesuitical in his thinking at times, he, he.
  11. Well for a dumb question as you call it or 'an absurd thread" as another early poster said it, it's gotten over 5K hits, and only half of those are Stu's.
  12. and a DCI visual judge for awhile? I know he's done that in USSBA.
  13. Wouldn't that be "Angels and Demons" ....like in Most Holy Name? or are you hoping Vanguard does another '89 Phantom of the Opera finale?
  14. or was that part of the planned marketing strategy all along????
  15. not exactly sure. Didn't see him once on tour or at a contest all summer. I heard he was deathly sick. Hope the rumors aren't true. He's a big behind the scenes support.
  16. Let alone that a Boston thread has been up almost a full 6 hours and Craiga hasn't chimed in once! (yet) I like how Boston is combining young new faces with experienced pros. and from a variety of backgrounds all.
  17. That may explain that heavenly visual package Pete Weber put together for them this summer. Totally entertaining and energetic.
  18. and sadly, it is the younger perspective judges that we're losing back to instructing. We need some younger judges in the box.
  19. oh, it was new to me. Besides he's only been there since Easter.
  20. I thought this was most interesting. I wonder if Fiedler makes him pay licensing royalties? But then again, Santa Clara U is a Jesuit school and he is a Jesuit... 21. Rumors abound on tour that in a cost-saving move, the chickens used for their feathers were not yet dead. They were being saved for one of those tremendous Greg Pych feasts he prepares for Finals week. Hope he is feeling better soon.
  22. Wow! Smart and Lentz. Nice catches. And a special thanks to Chad Pence as he takes some sabbatical time. What ever horn line he touched he improved and gave us some great sounds to enjoy. Nice guy too.
