  1. And now we return to the original question of Sanford or DCI ring while the thread hijackers pony up some guts to start their own discussion.
  2. And to most of us other 50 states in the real republic, Texas is just the north suburb of Mexico.
  3. I'd say "Welcome" but as you know on DCP that will be dissected, challenged, and parodied 8 zillion ways by the same dozen usual posters. I confess that I too was a lurker for a long while before venturing forth, and let me tell you, it's been..... Hopefully this will not be your last post or at least not the last for this century. Otherwise, based on the stats on the very bottom of the right hand corner of the first page for forums you'd become a member of one of the biggest religions in the nation, fallen away DCP'ers. Get on the bus!
  4. Any more drummers, I mean percussionists adding to this thread?
  5. Lee Beddis was ALWAYS a snare drummer and was later, at least 87 to 90 when he aged out with a ring to match what he won in 87. He was part of the great Canadian crew which came South (Vanderkoff, Gardiner, Miekle brothers, Christine Densmore Higgins, and the Ventures group. Speaking of Kitchner kids, their Octoberfest should be in full swing now!) In the photo, that's Aaron Goldberg to your far left; Mike Skouras in the center; to your far right I can't decipher the face, and it has been 30 years since this photo was taken (my old memory is too full with accumulated factoids since then to be further exact but I think it is one of the Quebecois,, Louis, we had in the corps at the time but my memory is foggy.. Any help out there, Maroon team as I am probably incorrect. It is not Brian Hickman if that is what you are expecting. I am trying to remember whether it was Brian's second or third season that he skipped because his family was temporarily stationed in England; we didn't have the trans-Atlantic cross-pond shuttles then that DCI has today; Martin and John from Birmingham were the first to start that route. Any more details and this will have to be bounced to the historical forum. I know someone will comment on the haircuts, "a bit different" from the close crop, almost skinheads, many Cadets have worn from about late '80's (this photo is '84.) to the present. Of course the show is a about Puerto Rican and Italian gangs in NYC during earlier decades, and not all wore flatheads then. With Aaron and Mike, even a daily shearing would still not be enough sez this guy who combs over his two strands of hair left on his head. Thanks for bringing back the memory of a great show and great people!
  6. Freddie, You may have taken one too many blows to the head that you are seeing Stars (Blue, and of Indiana, ha, ha.)
  7. "disagreements" may leave readers with a negative impression. Let us just say that the new director didn't want to be mistaken as a little Hopkins-clone but his own man and his own corps. He respects George a LOT!
  8. Come on, guy, Who are you kidding? You evidently don't watch much sports. You have never seen a missed foul call in basketball, hockey, lacrosse, or football? You've never seen a bad call by a ref which the later replay showed to be a strike rather than a ball or a ball rather than a strike? You've never seen a ref missing a flagrant foul behind the blue line because he was "sampling" elsewhere? Or missing holding penalties in football and basketball? Or missing a time penalty in basketball or lacrosse and field hockey? I won't even mention curling. You evidently wear the same blinders the refs do or spend too much time criticizing the posts of others on DCP rather than dealing with reality, Get in the Game!
  9. I was unaware of the Glassmen doing right foot when Dan was about. But you edited out what I wrote: at least part of the Gmen story of being right footers had to do... I am lucky enough to be considered a personal friend of Brian and his extended family all the way back to when he came from Fairfax as a high schooler through his marching career and even when he took the year off for the stint in England while his Dad, Bill, was in the Navy. I was his guest for his recitals for his degrees, especially at JMU, Most years we still get together once or twice. You are correct that Brian started as a cymbal player. The Cadets, however, have had several times when the pit, or some of its instruments, were on the move to give certain musical dimensions on the field. One such moment most folks know are the two pit members during WSS in '84, one playing a flat zylophone as they progressed from midfield to the front sideline. Yup, Lee Beddis was also there and is also a friend except when we talk hockey.
  10. Thank you. I'll have to work on this. And Stu- Isn't a good bit of those sports refereeing decisions subjective judging: is the ball inside the batter's strike zone or not, was it foul or not, did the foot hit the bag before the tag? Because it is so subjective because it is human judgement, not robotic, that's why they had to invent the call to the Toronto office to review the play and the review under the hood in other sports. But I would prefer to see the dialogue get back on track on the discussion of the various views, particularly of the percussionists themselves, of which award is more prized. I too find this thread interesting for its varied perspectives. Thanks guys.
  11. After some thought and considering what other posters have contributed, I decided to vote for the ring. Here's why: to win the ring whether with a good show design or an excellent one means that I as a member of my corps performed well enough to convince a tremendous number of the judges that we were the best in whatever we tried. The Sanford only considers what is the opinion of the drum judges the three nights. But let's take Crown '13 for an example. The drum judges maybe weren't convinced, but who says that the music judges and visual judges and effect judges for each thought they were sixth place. Maybe that line was a phenomenal contributer to the overall show, to the visual package, and to the marching arts. More than what just 2 drum judges per night perhaps saw. Just my thoughts. I can't tell you yet a flam from a paradiddle.
  12. To answer your question I don't. But the reason I replied was threefold. 1) Congratulations to Madison and all associated on reaching this great jubilee. May you have many more. 2) I appreciate the artwork you have posted over the years. You have a gift. 3) To congratulate you, Jeff, on an awesome weight loss and hope your goals are being met and your health is even better. I lost half that amount once in my life and have kept it off since. I certainly appreciate the effort, perserverence, and determination to follow through. P.S. Give Sean Phelan and Sean Hadley a hi from me. Great guys!!!
  13. Wow! 2 plusses already for a dumb joke. Now that's Erie, ha, ha.
  14. So post it! But then probably the guardlings will feel left out.
  15. I foresee the thread diverting to the argument of which of the Great Lakes is actually greater? Michigan or Ontario. One is superior!
  16. Loads of folks used that same LB/RB concept to defend/criticize/and appreciate how Cadets march in '85 and after. You are not alone.
  17. Of course, you helped her cross the street, didn't you?
  18. Are you saying that the 'Saders played the song by Sade? ha, ha
  19. When I first saw the OP, I wondered like you, "What's the point?" But as Mike D has stated above, there is a wide variation of thought which also reflects that not every one in corps is coming from the same perspective. Does this mean that drummers think differently from the rests of us? Well, there's been many a drum corps legend about that! No, not a dumb question at all when analyzed. Maybe not an easy one nor a typical DCP moaning post.
  20. I am surprised that no one in this thread, today Monday 9/23, has yet to mention the announcement on the DCI.org webpage, right column, under FB, just after photo of Mandarins and the little kids from Ireland, regarding the financial fundraising attempts to put Music City back on the DCI competitive field.
