  1. It's a great point - appreciate you making it! For us lesser versed in the scoring system (e.g., me!), was there a particular year that the scoring system changed? Or were changes incremental, such that there is no exact year one can identify as the "transition point"? Sorry for the silly question! I find the evolution of the scores quite interesting!
  2. And an update to this too. Average Finals scores by year: 2015 91.469 2014 92.838 (#1) 2013 92.279 (#9) 2012 91.333 2011 92.213 (#10) 2010 92.696 (#2) 2009 92.388 (#7) 2008 92.473 (#4) 2007 92.031 2006 91.263 2005 92.142 2004 92.438 (#5) 2003 91.450 2002 91.633 2001 92.017 2000 91.321 1999 92.408 (#6) 1998 92.025 1997 91.775 1996 89.225 1995 90.667 1994 89.925 1993 90.708 1992 91.675 1991 91.142 1990 91.342 1989 92.617 (#3) 1988 92.383 (#8) 1987 91.125 1986 91.292 1985 91.358 1984 91.850 1983 85.150 1982 88.275 1981 87.721 1980 83.708 1979 86.004 1978 85.754 1977 85.025 1976 84.021 1975 85.421 1974 82.708 1973 80.663 1972 81.954
  3. I came across this interesting thread tonight - really cool stuff! Thought it'd be interesting to update the top 12 given some big scores in recent years. There were 4 changes (1st, 4th, 5th, and 12th)... 1st - 99.65 - 2014 Blue Devils 2nd - 98.53 - 2004 Blue Devils 3rd - 97.70 - 1998 Blue Devils 4th - 96.85 - 2013 Santa Clara Vanguard 5th - 95.675 - 2014 Carolina Crown 6th - 95.30 - 1989 Star of Indiana 7th - 94.05 - 2007 Bluecoats 8th - 91.90 - 2010 Blue Stars 9th - 90.53 - 2004 Boston Crusaders 10th - 89.10 - 1988 Suncoast Sound 11th - 87.70 - 2005 Glassmen 12th - 86.225 - 2014 Crossmen A few interesting (but not surprising) observations: The Blue Devils in the top 3 spots 9 of 12 of these are since 2004 (this was also the case before the update!) 2014 was a historically high scoring year with 3 top scores for placements 1, 5, and 12
  4. Now we just need some sort of DCP medal ceremony and trophy to award. DCP...the People's Choice Award equivalent for DCI.
  5. That would be a really awesome moment and something we always think about with this show. Though as has been discussed in other places, the current SCV design team doesn't seem to design specifically for "Vanguard" yell moments like some other SCV design teams did. That's not intended to be a shot as this crew - they've put together some beautiful musical arrangements the last few seasons. I wonder if this is something they'd like to see people do or not. I know some aren't crazy about the yell...but I've always thought it's cool and unique to them. Just like "bloooing", "SUTA", etc.
  6. Not having seen the newly added "light up" near the end of their show I'm curious - at what point does it occur? There's a moment with just under a minute left in their show when their synth plays a sound effect of thunder...is it then or perhaps earlier? Just curious!
  7. Wow!!! They've kept that a really good secret! And I've even attended practice within the last week. So cool and it looks like they were rewarded with a pretty big score jump tonight. Sure the other top 5 corps weren't up against them but BK was there and has a great program this year. Is a medal still within their reach?! Such a tough top 5 this year!
  8. SCV looked to have a great run tonight based on the periscope feeds. Looked like a good audience too. Having been to this show many times the last 15 years I completely agree that this show isn't what it used to be ever since it was moved to occur after San Antonio. So glad Denton has drawn well (and has had a killer lineup for many years) but at the same time it's sad because the Dallas show has a ton of history and is one of the longest standing shows in the country. The rise of the Denton show has definitely been at the expense of the Dallas show, that is for certain.
  9. Attended SCV's practice in Norman, OK tonight. They're sounding really awesome this year. A very tight-knit vibe from the group this year - compared to what I've seen from SCV at this mid-July rehearsal in the past. They spent a couple hours as a full ensemble cleaning their closer and working on some new choreography. Their drill is amazing - even moreso in person. So much movement in such little space. Enjoyed a full run through and a surprise performance of Clowns to close rehearsal. Best moment of the night: following a run-through of their closer a little girl (maybe 4 years old or so) yelled out "Wow that was REALLY loud!" I think much of the corps heard it and the whole audience burst out in laughter. A fun moment for all.
  10. SCV posted this on twitter after the La Crosse performance a few nights back: https://twitter.com/scvanguard/status/619333393227116544 Maybe I'm reading too much into this but this suggests some changes to the show. Anyone in attendance or at any rehearsals have info? Did they change their ending?
  11. I've re-watched the Stanford show a few times and just have to say wow what a horn line they have this year! This has to be one of their strongest since...I honestly don't know how long. Perhaps this is an over-reaction to an early season performance (and not an in-person viewing either) but to my ears I'm hearing an intensity, volume, and balance we've not heard from this corps since maybe 2004 or the late 90s?! Maybe it's that whole "angry SCV" vibe...whatever it is, it's awesome to hear! What a slugfest it's going to be among the top 5 this year. Get your popcorn ready!
  12. I like the description of angry, late 90's SCV. When watching this show for the first time this season I immediately felt the vibe/style of 1997/1998 (leaning more towards 98). Great shows and excellent company for the 2015 production. Here's to hoping for a medal finish this year!
  13. Some really interesting stuff from SCV's design team regarding their 2015 production. Check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R776roUQnX8 This show has felt like a giant mystery to me (well compared with corps who are periscoping rehearsals, putting stuff on youtube etc.) so this feels like our first glimpse into what they'll be putting on the field this summer. Sounds very intriguing! Thoughts/reactions?
  14. Now that we have an official announcement, what's everyone's thoughts on SCV's chances of medalling this year? My personal take - based on their upward trajectory since 2011, their staff stability, success of the vanguard cadets, and what *based only on the announcement* looks to be a considerably more sophisticated show concept (relative to their previous 3 years) this appears to be their best chance in the last decade to make it back to medal stand. But as we all know it's no easy task given so many great corps and so little room for error at the top. Being a meteorologist, I live in a probabilistic world...so what's my forecast given the current "data" I've seen? I give them a 50% chance of medalling.
  15. Please SCV make your official announcement soon so we can discuss the upcoming season instead of all this silliness...
  16. They certainly have been trending towards medal contention the last 5 years: 2010: 7th 2011: 6th 2012: 5th 2013: 4th 2014: 4th But like others have already stated, there's a lot of stubborn company up at the top (dare I say competitive inertia!). Since 1992 the Cadets haven't finished any lower than 5th (wow!). Also since 1992 the Blue Devils haven't finished any lower than 4th (just insane...). Nothing has occurred to suggest those streaks will be ending this season. Mix in new powers like Carolina Crown who have been a top 5 corps since 2008 and it has become crazy tough to medal. Hope is certainly not lost though as the Bluecoats showed last year. An extremely well designed show with a dash of innovation and a highly talented group of performers to execute it is a recipe for success. The success of the Vanguard Cadets and the rise of SCV in the standings the last 5 years shows they've been successful in developing and recruiting talent, so that part of the recipe seems to be coming together. They have a stellar instructional (and leadership) staff that has championship experience so they certainly have a team capable of designing something top notch. If they can now pair up a championship caliber show design with the growing talent base they appear to have cultivated, a top 3 ranking seems feasible. They've played it safe the last 3 years and while they have created beautiful productions with recognizable music that many have enjoyed I wonder if this is the season where they take some bigger risks. I've enjoyed their recent productions but it seems we're due for something different from them. And if they produce something innovative (like the Bluecoats did last year) that could be just enough to crack the top 3. Taking more risks can certainly backfire too but as they say no risk, no reward. Extremely eager to learn what they have in store for us in 2015 and here's to hoping they can take it to the next level!
  17. Good mention (and I particularly enjoyed that show too). I suppose what I'm getting at is that a great piano show deserves some great piano playing now that synthesizers are in the mix. I know that we harp on poor use of synthesizers in the activity today (boo thunderous goo!) but what a great opportunity to make beautiful and tasteful use of it. This would be uniquely different to using the pit (or brass) for piano parts. I'm sure many think I'm crazy here, but I think it would be really interesting if a corps went so far as to have the synth/piano player be the feature element of a show. Of course with some rockin' brass and percussion along with it - it is drum corps after all. Trust me all, I'm a lover of the good old days, but I just think we can sometimes harp so much on how the activity has changed that we fail to embrace the new opportunities that the rule changes (e.g., synths, trombones, etc.) can bring. Ultimately I think that when good music is produced on the field we all win.
  18. Gershwin - sorry for not specifying.
  19. Was listening to Concerto in F today. What a great piece of music and definitely suited for drum corps (and yes played a fair amount - 11 times in the DCI junior ranks according to trusty corpsreps.com). It got me thinking, why the heck haven't groups been tackling some great piano-featured pieces now that synths are in the mix? Is it because of difficulty, key differential (61 keys on a synth vs. 88 on a grand piano), something to do with the rulebook (I'll admit, I'm not very familiar with the rules regarding synths...), or other reasons? It would seem that a group with a very skilled piano player could do some really cool stuff today with synths. Heck I'd be up for a new production of Concerto in F complete with a live performance on the synth. Now that would be impressive given the difficulty! I could see Phantom, Santa Clara, or Spirit tackle something like this...but that's just me. Thoughts?!
  20. Love the music, but I agree with others that doing another re-visit of a classic is probably not the way to go in 2015 after just doing that (some could argue the last 3 years with Les Mis and the Planets/Music of the Night). A clip from one of the SCV backstage passes this summer was interesting in that it revealed that they had 2 other show concepts when they instead pulled the trigger on Scheherazade for 2014: http://youtu.be/m-xkuHZBKL0?t=2m8s If only we could know what those other concepts are. Would seem one of those may be next, right?!
  21. Went to vanguard rehearsal tonight. Let's just say we have some changes at the end! Show is really coming together and feeling much more like a finished product. Will be a very interesting medal chase down the stretch!
  22. For anyone who hasn't caught SCV's 2014 show yet this season, there are actually a few clips in the latest SCV:Backstage episode. They don't tend to do that, so that's a pretty nice treat! SCV:Backstage Episode 3 24 trombones on that opening hit...wow! I wonder if they plan to utilize them any at the end of the show or if that was it. Pretty cool drill move at the 2:50-3:00 mark with the moving waves. Perhaps a mini tribute to the waving company front in the 2004 show?! One other interesting nugget that came up during the video (at 2:08) was that SCV was apparently developing 2 other show concepts that they wanted to do, but ultimately decided to do Scheherazade this year. Wonder what those could be and if they'll make the field in a future season. Interesting stuff!
  23. Feels like we know so little about SCV compared with the rest of the field. Anyone been to any recent practices care to share anything? Heck we don't even know what the uniforms look like yet!
  24. Should be interesting and I'm sure the fan reaction will be mixed. There are some great trombone features in Scheherazade. To not capitalize on that would be just silly in my opinion.
