  1. About to hit the road for Atlanta. I'm cautiously (but not blindingly) optimistic about the weather situation. At this point, I'll be fine with anything but a complete cancellation. But obviously the family and I would rather see and hear as many full field shows as possible -- it's our only opportunity for a live show this year.
  2. Initial convection has fired up farther south, down around Columbus and Macon. That could either be good news (rain stays in that farther south zone today and tonight), or bad news (rain eventually works it's way north or develops farther north as the afternoon goes on). I'd still rather see a batch of rain move through Atlanta in the next couple of hours, and stabilize things for later on tonight. Not sure that's going to happen though.
  3. Pacific Coast Highway, including beautiful washed out color (from the pollution):
  4. You can sort of see the multiple colors of the first costume underneath in a few of the pictures on this Facebook post: https://www.facebook.com/100064871644837/posts/422370579935327/?flite=scwspnss
  5. Nope, scratch that. Looking at the pictures posted to BC social media, it looks like the PJs go on over the trippy bibbers.
  6. Wearing the pajamas under the clown suits?
  7. Sorry, missed the earlier Glassmen banter. Were they the ones that did the silent drill, with mylar flags? I think it was a Beethoven tribute or something?
  8. I get that occasionally, been happening all year. I haven't been able to figure out what's causing it. Its fishing for an optimum streaming resolution, instead of locking in on one.
  9. I've been on vacation for the past week, so I don't have any access to the computer models. Just watching the NWS forecast, I get a sense that there will probably be a period of storms sometime between 2pm and 8 pm. Hopefully it comes early then dries out, like metro Nashville did today. I'll have a better sense of Atlanta's weather in the morning.
  10. The storms this morning may be what saves this show, weather-wise, tonight. Conditions are actually quite stable now, and less chance for becoming unstable this afternoon. The NWS forecast has rain chances dropping to 30 percent by 8 pm. Looking at radar, looks like some light showers on and off until about 3 pm, and then moving out. Fingers crossed for y'all, and also for those of us doing Atlanta tomorrow.
  11. You are exactly right in the first paragraph. The NWS is increasingly focusing on impacts, rather than just issuing watches/warnings/advisories. It is fine to tell people that a Heat Advisory is in effect. But the social scientists have taught us that many people aren't using that information to act appropriately. They (the social scientists) tell us (in the weather community) that we need to tell folks what the IMPACT from the weather will be, and also tell them what actions to take to mitigate those impacts. Personally, I don't see heat index (and its direct siblings like "feels like") going away. But WBGT may eventually become the primary impacts-based tool for those doing physical activities outdoors (construction, athletes, marching arts, etc). I'm almost ready to approach my kid's band director about it, and ask the band boosters to buy a simple WBGT instrument for them to use during band camp. It should then be fairly easy to teach them, "when this instrument reaches xx temperature, the kids should get a break x times per hour."
  12. I had to drive home from work during the bulk of the show, so I only got to listen to it through the Flo app on my phone into my car speakers. I had the volume on both up to max, and the resultant volume during the corps performances was just shy of optimal. Anyway, just listening to the music, here are my impressions: When I listen to Bluecoats and BAC, I feel like I am listening to a (very abbreviated) broadway-style show. All the parts fit together and tell the story. When I listen to Blue Devils, I feel like I am watching the top flight side shows at a carnival. You go to one side show booth, they do something amazing. Then the show promoters hurry you on to the the next booth, and THEY do something completely different but equally amazing. Then the next booth... When I listen to SCV, I feel like I am on the Carousel of Progress ride at Disney. You hear the same song over and over again, but each time it is a little different as you go around to the various scenes. When I listen to Crown, I feel like I am at a concert designed by a motivational speaker or a corporate team builder. A really, REALLY, good concert, with a lot of positive image instruction thrown in.
  13. It starts with (dry bulb) temperature, factors in wet bulb temperature (which is related to dewpoint), but then also factors in other things like sun vs shade, wind speed, cloud cover, and sun angles. The tricky part (if this is going to be used in the future) is that people are already calibrated to the Heat Index/"feels like" temperature, and the WBGT is an entirely different number that people are going to have to recalibrate to. For example, it typically takes a Heat Index of 100 to 105 to trigger an NWS Heat Advisory (and higher than that for an Excessive Heat Warning). For WBGT, stress on the body typically occurs with values in the 80s and 90s (and greater).
  14. DM sent. We've got everybody trained on "heat index," "apparent temperature," and "feels like." Just wait until we try to switch them all to the newfangled Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT).
  15. 30+ years in the NWS here. Hoping to put some volunteer hours in for a corps (any corps) after I retire in a few years.
  16. Not to be "that guy," but AcKshUallY hurricane season in the Atlantic basin has always run through November 30. Anyway...let's hope there's no tropical cyclone impacted DCI shows this season (or any season, for that matter).
  17. Yes, although this season so far has been relatively quiet. September is peak Cabo Verde hurricane development season. Gulf storms can form well into the fall (I worked Opal in October of 1995).
  18. Yeah, I wouldn't wish the rainfall of Harvey on anybody, and I can understand the trepidation. I live 200 miles inland in Alabama, and Hurricane Zeta took out several trees on my property. I can't imagine living close to the coast like that when hurricanes make landfall.
  19. As a Steelers fan and Penn State grad myself, your husband and I would probably come to blows if we ever met and started talking sports. 🙃
