  1. There's a piece in Suncoast 1989, where they have the slower section that starts off with the mello soloist and the guard is using bird-like equipment (watch the vid to see what I mean), that I absolutely adore. The chordal harmony is stunningly constructed (by RW Smith) and the orchestration in the hornline is lush and gorgeous. If they'd been a bit cleaner overall (especially percussion), I think it would have been even more fantastic.
  2. Yeah, honestly I don't like much of his stuff. He's got nothing on Myron, but Myron's not doing so well health-wise.
  3. Essentially a King before the King bugles. These are really, really few and far between. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Power-Bore-Mellophone-AMERICAN-COMMAND-2-VALVE-G-CUSTOM-BUILT-FOR-HERITAGE-/251987328555?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3aab9d7e2b
  4. Necro time. 1988 Garfield 1988 Suncoast 1990 SCV 1991 CBC 1995 SCV 1997 Phantom
  5. The Kilties senior corps might have some up for sale - that's where I got my 1st gen 3v Kanstul.
  6. Reminds me of BD 88 and 89 - the Black and Grey Devils, and then the Black Devils.
  7. What's funny is that I have a very old Kanstul 3v G ("very old" meaning pre-1994-ish, I believe they might have been modeled on the old King F mello), and it's extremely durable.
  8. The DEG 6V is actually a cornet shank, I think. I have one.
  9. Oh, I thought you meant "add a caption" to the sheets. I'd add colour guard as a separate caption.
  10. I think he wrote the whole book for 1980 Scouts. The whole thing is gorgeous from start to finish, and the layering and harmonic structures are just pure Ott.
  11. Star was only charging $250 to march in the early 1990s. It was all determined by the audition. Of course, they DID have a corporate sponsor, but Cook Group didn't exactly put their name out front.
  12. Necro time! I have officially become the Necromancer. 1991 Phantom Regiment - that has SO much theatre you wouldn't believe it 1990 SCV - those baritone hits, and the hornline's complete beauty. 1984 Garfield Cadets - what can I say? Honourable mentions go to 1985 Garfield and 1990 Star.
  13. What I find really intriguing is which horns corps chose to phase out first - I think it says something about their arranging or teaching styles back then. Personally, I think it was really smart for SCV to phase out their baris first, because they still had French horn bugles in 1990, so there weren't very many "missing notes" in the mid range - what they might have wanted was to fill the gap between the euphs and contras more easily. And what's really interesting is that CBC had 3v sops AND mellos in 1991, but their mello soloist in 1990 was still using a 2v King, and the sops were apparently all still on 2v then too. Presumably, they phased out the bottom half of the mellos and kept the 2v Kings for the top half...
  14. What do you think are the batteries that have had the best sounds? I'm not talking about the books. Anyone can play beastly books on crappy sounding drums. Which ones do you think have had the very best tone and tuning? For me, SCV 2014 is gorgeous sounding. The tenors are nice and deep, and the snares are crisp and sizzly, without the usual dull Kevlar sound. I also like Cavies 2010, if only for the Mylar segments (the book's not up my alley though); from the Mylar era, Garfield 1985 is the epitome of musicality in a drumline. The tenors were tuned great, the snares were loud and aggressive, with just the right combination of sound and choke, and the basses were perfectly intervaled.
  15. Generally speaking, what are the basic ins and outs of running an open class corps? I've heard that the biggest expenses are gasoline, housing, and food, but I have no clue what the rough dollar amounts for those tend to be among OC corps. And then buses and instruments are capital expenses (up front) that you can maintain for years - correct me if I'm wrong. I'd just like some clarification and discussion. EDIT: this is not me trying to start a corps. This is solely for the purpose of wanting to know for my own interest.
  16. I'm going to revive this thread, for the sake of reviving it. I've since changed my opinion on CBC 1990 - I actually love it now that I've seen the whole thing. But I don't very much like SCV 1989 - I think it's not nearly as impactful as 1988.
  17. Vanguard's the only corps in DCI that's never been out of Finals. Not once. Didn't Devs place 24th in 1973?
  18. Apparently, the Bridgemen's 1985 non-fielding of a corps helped the fledgeling Star out, as did Pride of Cincinnati's folding.
