The SOL in New Jersey was waived for a period due to MeToo events.  I recall this being discussed during the Hopacalypse.  The current lawsuit was filed before the window of the modified SOL closed.

Yep.  So all the molested New Jersey altar boys of the 20th Century could put in their civil claims against the deep-pocketed Roman Catholic Church.

  2. I'm watching the Ravens-Bengals game at the moment, and I'm reminded that the Baltimore Ravens were once the Cleveland Browns, before Art Modell moved the team to Baltimore from Cleveland after the 1995 season.

The NFL later granted a new franchise to Cleveland that is known as the Cleveland Browns.   The team now playing in Cleveland wears the same uniforms and helmets as did the team that moved to Baltimore.   The NFL attributes team history of the Cleveland Browns from 1946 to 1995 to the team currently playing in Cleveland, not the franchise that Modell moved to Baltimore.

So... suppose a sexual assault lawsuit is filed based on an incident involving a Cleveland Browns staffer in 1982, would the team now known as the Cleveland Browns be liable?   Or the Baltimore Ravens?

The Bristol parade pays among the best in the country. Would seem to make sense to have two Boston area shows 4th of July weekend, with corps having the opportunity to march the Bristol parade--the best 4th of July parade in the country.

Yes, it looks like DCI axed the Lynn and Quincy shows.

In 2023, Cadets marched in both the Bristol and Wakefield 4th parades, and the Connecticut Hurricanes were in the Wakefield parade.

I can't remember if Spartans or BAC appeared in these parades as well.

From 40 years ago. I’m sorry, but the organization that exists today, meaning board, directors, etc, are not the organization that existed then.

The individuals responsible should be held accountable. Not an organization that has leadership no longer applicable to the situation.

That argument hasn't worked for the Roman Catholic church when hit with lawsuits from altar boys who claimed molestation from priests 40-50-60 years ago.

Not relevant in the legal system.

I agree.   My point speaks to liability exposure.   Cadets can thank the Roman Catholic church for covering up for years for priests who diddled with altar boys, which prompted New Jersey to open the time window for everyone to file lawsuits for any kind of molestation charge.

So if we're saying it's likely a corps will have to liquidate its assets and fold because of an alleged incident forty years ago, it won't be the last corps to fold.

I think the Cadets were already in tough place anyway, because for a while they haven't seen by potential members as a "cool corps".

Had they continued, Cadets never seemed poised to shift to a "WGI with Brass and Percussion (mixed by a soundboard)" corps, which it seems is what DCI in 2023 has become.

Hmmm… this is about money and we will now be losing a drum corps in the activity because of it?
What is “it”?  We will not be (possibly) losing a drum corps in the activity because there’s a lawsuit and the plaintiff seeks compensation. Rather, we will be losing a drum corps in the activity because a marching member was allegedly assaulted by a staff member of the corps.

And was alleged to have happened over forty years ago.

This is such a jolt . This will take a bit for me too digest this news  . But my first reaction is not a good one . It’s no secret the Cadets finances coming out of the Hopkins saga , then Covid lockdowns were on pretty shaky grounds .  Now this . My sense , sadly , is that a Corps does not come back from this . Cadets likely finished 2023 still in some level debt  . If they have to pay legal bills going way back ,plus  upcoming legal bills , then a lawsuit settlement of some number , then that would require selling off whatever current tangible , physical assets they might have …

Oh Man . Don’t see how a Corps comes back from this . Taking a season off won’t solve this , imo . So sad . It really is . But if disbandment forever is the price a Corps pays for apparent  sexual assault of a minor , then it was not finances that did them in , it regrettably was a couple of untrustworthy sleazy adults  that buried this iconic 89 year old Drum Corps . So many wonderful and decent people came thru the Cadets over these 89 years too , that I feel so sad to learn of this fir them too  … and of course  it goes without saying , sad that a minor had their trust in adults shattered in such a devious way as an impressionable and vulnerable youngster while marching Drum Corps in the Cadets   .😥

    FHNSAB?   I guess not.

didn't really answer anything but ok.

Or as Don Henley put it....

"Well, I coulda' been an actor, but I wound up here
I just have to look good, I don't have to be clear
Come and whisper in my ear
    Give us dirty laundry

You don't really need to find out what's goin' on
You don't really wanna know just how far it's gone
    Just leave well enough alone
    Eat your dirty laundry

    Kick 'em when they're up
    Kick 'em when they're down
    Kick 'em when they're up
    Kick 'em when they're down"

In my case I learned that a parish priest worth his salt keeps that short list of those members to be called on when needed to balance the budget (those with the big $).  You coddle and maintain that special relationship with those handful of members. It can feel distasteful but it’s reality.   Surely a corps that’s been in existence for as long as Cadets must have such a “short list” of such donors identified. My hope is that the Board has or will “maximize” this funding source relationship. It takes time. It takes savvy. But it’s absolutely necessary.

I'm guessing that "short list" has been tapped every year since 2018.   And it's now "tapped out."

Eries sports complex didn’t meet code.  Read that again.  It means it can’t have people in it. So it’s moot.

as someone who taught in Erie area. Erie bands are not great. It’s not the students. It’s the directors who just don’t teach fundamentals very well.

as someone who works with a lot of non profit. Anytime you suspend operations, it means the board didn’t meet their fundraising numbers. And not by a few grand.  But by a large number.

I wondered when someone would mention the problems with the management of the Erie Sports Center.

    https://www.yourerie.com/news/local-news/erie-sports-park-reopens-dome-after-temporary-closure/

However, it would appear that the code violations have been corrected.

Does anyone know whether it's true that Cadets are under an agreement with the Erie Sports Center that doesn't expire until 2033?

But this helps the case for DCI all age.  They can now march, not kill their accounts, not have to travel as far. And still get an Indy weekend.

Cadets could consider going the DCI all age route, wear their West Points, and perform shows without all the props and electronics.

But would Cadets be able to attract potential members and fans?

It seems like those who talk about "dream corps" are more charmed by wearing cool pajamas and the opportunity to roll around on the turf "emoting."

Because that's what "cool" these days.

Coco Chanel once said, "Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off."  It's the less is more idea, which I hope Blue Stars thinks about when designing their show next year.  Lots of props and uniform changes can make a show look cluttered and messy.

I keep hoping someday the Blue Stars do a show called "PROP STORY -- No prop gets left behind!

Show premise:  A Blue Coats prop winds up on another corps' equipment truck and they spend the whole show trying to reunite it with all their other props from over the years...
