  1. Well said. Now imagine if the flute section will have to be mic'd to be heard over the 80 member brass line...
  2. what greater number in the stands? You are talking judges, not audience I presume. Unless you are anticipating piccolo parents filling every seat.
  3. Boy this photo brings back memories of some great people having a great summer. There a few current WGI/DCI judges in the photo; look how slim, trim, and animated they are.
  4. I usually don't do predictions, but I can see this being DCI's last if the woodwind proposal passes. Other sponsors (beyond mfgrs.) may be withdrawing. Housing will be absolutely impossible if the size of units have to be increased to cover more mms, more buses, more....
  5. Well Charleston, SC has been hit the last few years by hurricanes and floods which had them under water so there's your Surf (not just Jersey) Cascading down upon them. Kansas City? You have to be super clear on DCP whether you are referencing Missouri or the State of Kansas. Some think there is a difference.
  6. He's still grieving the Rose Bowl results. Be gentle with the old guy.
  7. Shouldn't you return all those extra $$$ and non-productive hours to the taxpayers, your real employers??? I can hear you laughing from here.
  8. oh, are you suggesting that DCI might not find his opinions infallible?
  9. They think they are the only talent in the activity...Cistern Blew, the elite, the cognoscenti.
  10. Be more specific and clear on your conclusion. Do you hope it does not pass (as in you disagree with the the proposal) or are you passing it along so that it will? DCI caucuses are noted for how some wordsmiths there twist perceptions and conclusions to get their own end result. My experience in these meetings is not pleasant memories especially when lobbying groups (mfrs.) put monies and endorsements into play.
  11. I say a Black-out on Black. (Can she be impeached?) Will there be another scandalous newspaper article talking about who is getting what monies under and over the table from the musical instrument manufacturers? Will it appear at last minute before the meeting?
  12. This proposal would adjust the current scoring system to include six judges who would all adjudicate off the field from within the stands. The proposal calls for these judges with the following percentages factored into a corps’ total score. One overall general effect judge with a music background (20%), one overall general effect judge with a visual background (20%), one visual ensemble judge with a visual design background (15%), one visual ensemble judge with a color guard background (15%), one music ensemble judge with a percussion background (15%), one music ensemble judge with a brass background (15%).
  13. that is what I am speaking of. The viewpoints are getting fewer (and by the same old, same old.)
  14. the oatmeal box must have been too tight.
  15. old guard judges keep their jobs (number goes down to only 6 judges) and limits the need to increase and widen who might be judging, particularly amongst the younger generations.
  16. Heard around the chicken coups... Perhaps the next Phund raiser for the corps may be the over/under boxes (like a Superbowl game score) when a certain someone proposes and she says yes. Come closest on the calendar and corps gets half of the $$, winner gets the other half OR the chance to donate it back and get a bigger tax write-off. No pressure, no pressure...ha, ha, ha. Wait, that could be 2 Phundraisers... a) when will he propose? b) will she say yes?
  17. Is that the corps which tends to pull all the marionettes and puppets' strings in DCI? [I think they even flagrantly gave us that image in a show they did seasons back.]
  18. Watch your back. I got threatened by a Ohio accountant for using that term, even though you are probably correct.
  19. one of the other changes to note is location. In 1983, a year the Cadets benefitted from an infusion of talent from those smaller Boston CYO and EMass corps shutting down, most Jersey drum corps was urban centered with the population of Bergen and Passaic Counties being greater than some cities elsewhere in the nation. Only then (after the Great Mississippi infusion a few seasons previously) did Jersey drum corps shift from local recruitment models to national/international membership. With success comes wider recruitment interest. Encorps, still in 2019 using a local model, does benefit from the Jersey shift for better marching activity interests from urban parishes and posts to suburban school districts (Greater Princeton and New Brunswick) rather than Paterson, Passaic and Newark. Perhaps a local model may still subsist some California smaller corps, but not many in DCI at all.
  20. I guess it depends on the navel manuvers, ha, ha. But that's not the exposure the OP is concerned about DCI.

  22. Sometimes, particularly in niche activities, so much time is spent staring at one's navel that it hurts to raise one's head and see reality for what it is.
  23. My yearly preview of Tournament of Roses website to prepare for what marching bands will be in Pasadena (and the TV) this year shows an annual variety of Costa Rican entries (to match those coming from Mexico, the Orient, and Europe.) Here's the list for 2020 and 2021 trying to surpass what Pacific Crown did last year. https://tournamentofroses.com/20-marching-bands-selected-to-join-2020-rose-parade/ A google of Wikipedia also gives what marching bands have already been approved for 2021 including Costa Rican units. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rose_Parade_marching_bands
