  1. well, contra is a wonderful instrument, and sousaphone is a really bad instrument unless you are in new orleans (then it is the best instrument (besides bone)) well, in marching band i marched sousaphone last year (because the tuba players are cool and my section was being really lame (basically i was the only baritone that knew anything and they hated me for it so i made their lives easier and left)) sousaphones 1. are really bad sounding instruments it makes your tone sound a lot huskier than concert tuba or contra (which is concert tuba on your shoulder basically) 2. are confining, marching techniques are usually based on lifting the upper body off of the lower body and it helps ALOT to lift your head (solved with contra's 10 degrees up or 15 or 20 (which ever your corps does)) lifting the arms from resting on your sides to where the valves on the contra are. 3. destroy your traverse (slide) because you have no lift on your spine. 4. wobble because they are resting on your side (basically on your upper leg) and not on your upper body which is the part you are keeping smooth. personally, i dislike the sousaphone unless it is jazz. The sousaphone should have never been let on the field in my oppinion. so when you get your contra, you will be like oh my god i hate sousaphone. personally im sticking to baritone for corps, and quiting marching band. kill two birds with one stone
  2. i recently discovered i had a major problem with the way i had my mouthpiece on my lips. i always shoot my lips really easily, and i think it is because i press too hard. But i have relieved alot of the pressure off of my face and now i have a dent in my lip where one side is pressed. I know i play off to one side and i think i might use too much upper lip. I also have extremely good flexibility with my lips (i can do fast lip trills even without the pressure) and i can play high, but i cant connect low notes to high notes without changing my embrochure. i was wondering if anyone could tell me if they have had any of these problems and how they fixed them, or if anyone could just tell me EXACTLY how the mouthpiece is supposted to be positioned on the lips (theoretically,) or anything else i can do to fix these problems if the problem is not mouthpiece position. truely i want to fix these problems before my drum corps camp in a month, so any suggestions from experienced players of any brass instrument will help. thank you -demo
  3. BLUECOATS!!!!! i hope i make it. i love them SO much!!!
  4. alot of bari's at my school are going to try out in the texas audition. im going to try out for blue coats down in cedar park. i think i have a better chance there, besides ITS CHEEPER!!!! :P
  5. i went to tmea's convention this year (where they do the all state performances for texas) and king had a stand w/ the new horns phantom is playing on and i tryed it out. man that was the best sound i have ever played, even better than my concert euphonium. for me king. definately king.
  6. let me state my position... me = 1 out of 9 sophomores to get put in high school wind ensemble at my school, freshmen are put in freshmen band. last year the best euphonium player in our school ever graduated and he used to help me out. well i just found out that i am principle euphonium player. i mean at first i happy that i was put in wind ensemble but now to find out that i beat 2 seniors a junior and 2 other freshmen blows my mind. i was recently in an audition on my marching baritone for a solo in our marching band show. and i placed last out of four. at our school our director makes the trombone players play baritone for marching band. well i was beat by a junior trombonist, a senior trombonist, and a senior euphoniumist. im afraid that in my wind ensemble i might not live up to what the directors think i am. maybe they do know that im not that great but they see potential in me. what i need help with is euphonium technique from all of you corps members out there that marched baritone and/or euphonium. since the really good euphoniumist graduated last year i have been kinda lost. any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you -demo p.s. i have a bad habit of not capitalising any words (trying to work on that) so just ignore it.
  7. um.... my favorite corps is phantom regiment. BUT i do love cavies and BD. if blue devils had better drill i would love them. BD has the music cavies have the drill so. for the question blue devils or cavies, im going to have to go with the corps known as THE Blue Cavalier Devils (made up) if BD had cavies drill they would be the best. actually i like blue devils more than cavaliers just because they are cooler. -demo
  8. how many spots of each instrument are there usually in a corps? contra baritone euphonium mello soprano
  9. have you made sure the valves are in the correct place (i.e. third valve in 1st valve slot) one time i gave my horn a bath and got the valves mixed up and i thought i put them in right, it worked okay, but it was really hard to play low and the tone was horrible. i realized i needed to switch the valves after one of my slides came out and i could see that the holes weren't matching up exactly. i switched the valves and my horn worked perfectly. maybe you have the same problem. -demo
