My favorite Guardsmen story. 1975 VFW State Prelims. Our corps was pretty good that year, but not quite Guardsmen good. We get back to the school after prelims and the corps director comes running up as the busses are unloading and screams "We beat the Guardsmen! We beat the Guardsmen!" The corps goes wild. Hugs everywhere. Then it dawns on me, how in the heck did we do that? Turns out, in the hot blazing sun of those afternoon prelims, the Drum GE Judge had passed out from heat exhaustion right before we went on. The other judges didn't know what to do, so they gave us a perfect 10.0 in Drum GE where we'd normally be about a 6.5. Needless to say, we got beat by them in Finals. Those whacky Guardsmen pumpkins in their Lincoln stove-top shakos were all really cool people, though and we got to be friends with many of them as we saw each other nearly every weekend in the early and mid 70s. Good people.

And they didn't even cover this in the Bradley Cooper movie. The bastages.

Excellent choice, Hook'Em. I say it every day, History has meaning. Embrace it and honor it, young people. Don't toss it aside. BTW, for the anti-costume/prop people, notice the '71 corps. Yes, it's really been going on that long.

That still just seems like a staggering number of auditionees. Staggering insanely good, not an unbelievable number. What's a typical number for most "destination" corps?

Well, looks like they fell a little short of their goal, but not a bad showing. Even stranger than Health & Wellness donations wagging the dog, Instrumentation led all categories. I thought these corps mostly all got freebies from the suppliers?

Yikes still a ways to hit their goal before the end of the day. Pick it up, Troop fans. A little weird, their Health & Wellness area of contribution choices is the lagger. That's where my money went.

🙏 That's really all that matters. All of this drum corps stuff is pretty meaningless in the big picture. So odd how so many never realize that until they hit their 40s on up.

A question from the uneducated. Will the decision on the SOA case have bearing on the Cadets case when it comes to DCI's culpability? A precedent of sorts.
