  1. For 2018... the lines are actually quite GOOD!!! I think the OP is saying Crown received 18.450 (7th-2014 Finals) = Bad (based on previous DCP posts) and then trying to draw a some weird conclusion that Crown 17.50 (1st-2018 mid season regional) also = Bad because since no one has yet to reach at least 18.450 ( a previously known BAD score, albeit a FINALS score) then in 2018 ALL lines = BAD to date.... Scoring has to be discussed in terms of the book, talent, and a particular night's run coupled with a particular judges tastes/style/scoring rules. For example... Some 2018 feedback from the Coats on another thread from other folks... dynamic range with control is missing (mainly too loud with basic notes most of the show per the book) and also not enough movement to the Basses and Tenors...mainly snare focused. Contrasting to Crown 2018, lots of dynamic contrast and movement between sections to show talent. Also nice movement between battery and front ensemble.
  2. For me the low water mark recently for Crown percussion was 2014... really "bad" book coupled with a really young line. It is also worth noting and I can't remember the exact years without looking at the videos... they lost their center snare and might have lost someone else between '10 and '12... seems like that was pretty disruptive as well if I recall. But "bad" is probably not the right word... as someone noted above any line in the top 12 most of us would love to be a part of because they all do rock. It just comes down to the book and talent level (plus the nightly run) of any said year to distinguish the "best"
  3. umm... since this a percussion thread...based on last weekend's scoring they currently are... 6th place and .85 from first (add in SCV and they would have been 7th most likely). That is a big mountain to climb. What will be interesting is this weekend's set of shows and with scrambling of lineups (like Crown on last at Katy versus 5th from last at San Antonio)... how does this play with the percussion margins and where does SCV drop in? Do the rankings stay similar or is there a nightly shift mainly due to performance order?
  4. Just seems people are having a hard time believing the reality that Crown is actually <gulp> a Sanford contender this year! Simply enjoy that Crown percussion actually did beat the Blue Devils already this year
  5. Crown 2018 is real this year and their "musical" show is percussion centric with the perfect energetic book for them (and possibly the best Crown line talent-wise ever). Not sure about why you think Crown would max out their package early...would be interested to see your view here. Agreed SCV in the driver's seat.
  6. It may be a matter of opinion on any given night (like Orlando)... but the trend is a fact. This trend will be interesting to see if it continues to be a book AND performance issue. They need to improve better than 6th though, or their placement will be a huge drag on overall scoring which will keep them from the Gold.
  7. SCV for sure is the high benchmark as of late... but I agree the Sanford fight in 2018 is in these 4 (SCV, Crown, BD, BAC). I do like Crown this year, with a nice win to support their trend (and acknowledging a weird scoring/ranking from Orlando). Can't wait to see the head to head with SCV. The possibility for Crown (for the Sanford 2018) is real though.
  8. WooHooo!!! Crown Percussion... loving the energy of this year's book.
  9. If it adds and makes a "moment" than go for it... sitting as is will not get them any where in points. Take the Percussion Caption and the parts that drive this: the book and talent/execution (on a given run). Crown Battery 2018 is on fire and has an incredible book this year. (side note....I can't wait to see them head to head with SCV to just see if they are truly a top 3 line for this year. ) But back to my point... 2014 battery book writing was horrid and the percussion placed 7th on finals night. Too much repetition and not enough "quality" features to promote any GE or percussion scoring. If it is boring, then the percussion judge will look to others that are playing a more interesting book and reward them in the ranking. Sometimes in the past you might say BD's line had too many notes, but you never hear the judge saying that!! Get your judge saying that was "incredible" or "how did you do that!!?...that was insane"... Make those moments (that fit) and get the scoring.
  10. Bluecoats need their Percussion to beat Crown's... problem is Crown has one of their best books and lines in years and I think will be difficult to pull off. This will rob precious 10ths from Bloo and I think will be problematic when the West corps show up. There is no undefeated in 2018...
  11. It worked good enough (except the announcer part)...using Apple equipment. Looking forward to the rest of the season.
  12. I am following the Crown Battery.... 2017 was so much improvement over prior years and (much better book writing to show the talent)... can 2018 deliver more!! (Nice pre-season clip on the Crown thread)
  13. Very nice... looking forward to more Crown Battery 2018!!
  14. Sweet... the TIMPS are back...Crown has certainly got their mileage out of them over the years!!
  15. "Now she must burn!!" is one of the best lines and visuals for 2017
  16. iTunes now has 2017 Championships now listed across 3 volumes.
  17. Phantom played Fire of Eternal Glory in '93. Love the all brass version in the "Ornaments in Brass" collection...
  18. iTunes lists a "Silver Bells" album from DCI and this looks to have the "Ornaments in Brass" selections plus others.
  19. If ordinal scoring doesn't pass... Hop's next proposal will be to score like figure skating... all judges judge the full monty and toss the hi/lo scores :P
  20. Musically I liked 14 better over 16...especially the ballad and the high fast loud epic pitch bend closer. Tough call between the two though but slight edge to 14.
  21. 2012 is a favorite for me. I really enjoyed the balance in the front ensemble with the hornline to add to the overall musical experience (and I have always loved their battery writing). Adding in Holst and "The Planets" and you got my attention!!
